Documents to take with you to work on at home, documents you need to take with you to your desk in a client's office, working in a project alliance office with no access to your main office computer. All presupposing of course that your IT dept is too paranoid to give you an iPass token. Stoopid innit?
Most distros come with burning software. I use K3B and it works well. I'm sure there's a Gnome equivalent, and there's XCDRoast, but I'm not sure if that can do DVDs. Don't see why not.
It will work unless it's some weird proprietary interface, and you're unlikely to see that in a new drive. All IDE/ATAPI ones should work. I've never come across a CD or DVD that doesn't.
THe only thing to consider is the bundled software. DVD burners seem to perform the same, the value adding being in the bundled software. If you only use Linux, you're not interested in the bundled software and therefore you can get the cheap OEM one that doesn't have any.
You forgot (of course) the Russians, Chinese, Indians and Pakistanis, all of whom have nucmear weapons and energy programs and go uncriticised - but Oh they're "socialist" and/or not white so that's OK right?
"...and they vigourously defend the right of the US, UK and France to continue to develop their nuclear weapons program, in direct contravention of the non-proliferation agreement."
You're going to have to come up with references for that one, otherwise you'll come across as a typical International Socialist:). My recollection is that in the case of France at least, they went ahead with the Pacific testing despite objections from Australia and NZ - hardly vigorous defence.
You only need the surface to be wet as well as smoooth. I have seen spiders on the glass screen of my shower. They have more trouble hanging on as the condensation builds up. Dunno if it would be the same for geckos.
Didn't exactly burn out the CPU, but a lot of the capacitors on the motherboard began to bulge and I strated to see random reboots, refusing to boot, lockups and so on.

Unfortunately Autodesk's business model consists of regularly breaking compatibility with old versions and forcing people to buy "upgrades" they don't otherwise need.
If people don't buy the upgrades by the deadline, they have to pay full price or risk not being compatible with the rest of the industry.
Autodesk make Microsoft look like angels - and don't get me started on accounting packages. Hundreds of dollars for an upgrade just to get the current tax tables? at least for accounting there's Gnucash.

Actually for a lot of people, the groin is what they do most of their thinking with.
...then why settle. If settling removes any chance of a decent future, you're better of letting them sue you with the best case being you might win, and the worst possibly being no worse off than settling.
They also rebrand other products to make them seem like their own. Like PERC raid controllers, for example, which typically just LSI Megaraid adapters. And so on.
Not only that, they charge top dollar US-Made type prices for cheap Korean components
There's this really useful one that lets you talk to people, just by entering their special code. It uses voice too once you're on-line to the person, so you don't have to worry about typing.
Nah, God had to use DRM (the language thing) after they created a circumvention device (the tower) that allowed them to gain access to a protected work (God)
I have to add my endorsement for Lego Starwars. I have mentioned it in other posts, but I have played it with my 7yo son, and he loves it. The drop in/drop out feature is great. If my son is playing on his own, I can drop in to help him through a difficult stage.
He's had it since November and has just recently almost played it out.

Were there a worm, a spider and a grasshopper there?
Oh wait, that was a peach.

John Anderton! we have loads of bargains for you in-store now!
...and we thank you O Lord for nuclear power, which has yet to cause a single proven fatality - at least in this country.
Homer J. Simpson.

They did this 30 years ago. Just ask Gough Whitlam.

Wake me when:
1. The blank discs cost around $1 each
2. They sort out which format is going to dominate
3. The drives cost less than A$200
You've obviously never met my neighbor.
