you can download and IDE(PythonIDE) and extras from MacPython
i'm in the same boat, i just got a powerbook for christmas and i downloaded the stuff last night, wanting to learn some python.
i had trouble with the install, all the latest stuff is for 10.3 and i've got 10.4. the wiki FAQ can get you up and going. also has a package manager and you can download PyObjC, which is a "bridge" (wrapper class?) so you can code in python and use cocoa elements. just getting my mac a week ago, i don't actually know what much of the above means, but thats where i'm heading.
slashdot is really only 50% misunderstanding and name calling. if you want 100%, go to zdnet where any article on microsoft or 'linux' is a source of constant flaming.
i guess after re-reading your original post, you weren't actually suggesting dropping the EU. you were just listing options, with the latter one meant to be so absurd that it wasn't a real one, and I agree
and assuming that I disagree with you simply because I replied to your post isn't actually a bad assumption, considering this is Slashdot;)
For the reasons you outlined it is in Microsoft's interests (the EU is a huge and lucrative market to Microsoft) to acquiesce to the EU's demands.
yeah...that's what i was trying to say. my reply was to the originator's who said that 'ms should drop the EU'. i was saying how that is not smart from a business point-of-view. the smart decision would be 'to acquiesce to the EU's demands'. i don't deny ms's anti-competitive behaviour. i did not mention it simply because i didn't need to. dropping the eu would be stupid regardless.
they stop trading the EU
i don't think it's that simple. i'm not sure at the time of this writing what percentage of ms clients the EU makes up, but it is surely large. if your local mom&pop coffee shop demands ms un-bundles it's software (or whatever the hell the EU wants this time), sure, fuck'em and forget'em.
when a group consisting/representing millions, it's not that simple. alienating them is not a good idea, especially with the looming 'Linux!!!!' threat, be it real or not. Open Source is arguably a bigger presence in EU than it is here (US), and so far there are open source alternative to pretty much everything ms does (not to say they are better, not trying to start a flame war on ms vs. os). so the eu does not NEED ms, however it has already committed a lot of money to them. ms also does not NEED the eu, but they are receiving lots of sweet-moula from them.
besides, in this 'war of proprietary vs open', abandoning a large number of your troops because they want you to un-bundle the chicken in the chicken-noodle-soup you serve them for lunch is not wise, especially when then can walk a few miles and join the enemy.
in other news we breathe air. surprisingly, we breathed air yesterday. analysts suspect we will breathe air tomorrow as well.
i think we need a different approach to msoft. think of him like that huge guy at the gym always grunting and dropping weights from the highest point possible making the loudest thud, or jack thompson. they want your attention, no, they thrive on it
calling them meathead or batt-shit-fucking-crazy lawyer just makes them work harder. /.'ers are sterotypically computer people, and ergo sterotypically have the amazing power to ignore most people. so why not them?
And Slashdot jumps in with a sensationalist headline proclaiming certitude, never one to let a little thing like reality (or sanity) get in the way of a nice flamewar...
Ahh...you have stumbled on the meaning of Slashdot. Guard it's secret well young one...
Yeah games are kinda what is important. I'm not going to buy either one to put on display and brag to my friends about, I'm going to buy one for the games, an xbox360 seems to be launching with 11 out of 18 games being sports or racing. Personally, I think racing games are a notch above retarded, and i'd rather physically play sports than watch them.
Riddle me this:
Say two men came up to you and offer you differnt gaming systems.
Both promise great hardware and good games (in the long run), but both at a hefty price.
One man raves about his product, blasts all of your senses with how awesome it will be, claims the other's hardware will be lacking and too costly, but goes out of his way to make sure there will be a limited supply of his own.
The other man speaks softly and carries a big fuckin' stick. He says nothing of the other company. He let's his reputation as being a power house in the game console world speak for itself.
Personally I would rather give my money to the latter. Given that past performance does not guarantee future results, both consoles will be great and I really doubt one will bankrupt the other. There are plenty of people in the world who wont touch a piece of Microsoft ANYTHING in less they absolutely have too, and there are people who feel the same about Sony.
I beat Halo into the ground on legendary while on my roommates Xbox in college. I graduated, moved out and haven't played since. I enjoyed it, it was a fun AND great game, but I didn't buy an Xbox when 2 came out, and I won't buy a 360 when 3 comes out. Personally, I'd rather play metal gear solid, even if I spend more time watching it.
Because my last post was short.
this reminds me of the time cartman got that amusement park, and then wouldn't let anyone come in, so of course everyone was DIEING to get in, simply because they couldn't. The park itself was nothing special, but it was the simple fact that they were not allowed....
I'm not sure what bothers me more, the fact that this scheme is OBVIOUS and a bunch of bull-poop, or the fact that it's working....
I'm remembering my first season of baseball, the first year we had actual pitchers, not using the pitching machine any more.
My team sucked, and I'll tell you why. Fatty McFat was our pitcher. Not because he was a good pitcher, god no, but because he cried the loudest and his mom was delusional in thinking that he was simply big-boned and the greatest athlete. EVER. His crying and her excessive bitching made Fatty the pitcher. Oh yea his dad was the coach. 4 eyes was 1st base. Couldn't see shit, but hey he was Fat's best friend. I was 2nd base and I kicked ass I tell you. I was also 2nd batter up, which was retarded. I couldn't hit shit, and I told my coach that. "I'm going to strike out; me hitting the ball would be a miracle. make me bat last". but no, we batted alphabetical to be fair. We picked our own positions, which really meant who cried the loudest got what they wanted, and who couldn't take it and would play outfield just to shut the crybaby up.
Did I mention we sucked? Anyway we lost a shit ton of games, imagine that.
Next year I went to a select team, which had tryouts. I didn't make it, and I quit baseball. I wasn't offended, I just sucked at baseball and had no business playing. It's not the coach's fault, who was paid to make that team win. He made the decisions based on his experience as a player in college and a coach. No one cried on that team.
The moral is that lots of things are nice about being 'fair' and giving everyone a say and a shot. The results are dog shit though. Just look at the UN.
say they're still getting unwanted calls, according to a recent phone survey
I would consider the recent phone survey an unwanted call...so that's kind of self defeating. . . calling peolpe on the do-not-call list to see if they are getting calls even though they are on the do-not-call list
Of course they do. Self preservation is instinctive
Fanatics in general are disturbing. I feel, like the RIAA, his efforts are futile. I don't believe legislation is the solution to social problems.
free pdf at www.diveintopython.org
i'm half way through and think it's great. gives you examples upfront, and then walks you through step-by-step as to what your doing.
... you're telling me i won't be recieving my Penis Patch Body Wrap anytime soon?
dammit!

The new tools allow programmers with less training to build applications rapidly.
which is obviously a best practice.
it can be great to develop fast
however that which is developed fast is rarely great
US businesses...they are probably the most unethical and immoral
Stop. What would your mother say if she saw you being so redundant?

PS3 launches with like 5 sports/racing, so yes games are influencing me a bit
