  1. Re:I wish more people would think this way!!! on SAS CEO Blasts Old-School Schooling · · Score: 1

I have a six-year-old in second grade and a four-year-old in kindergarten. The teachers are using the same boring techniques that didn't work when I was in school and are boring the crap out of my second grader. He's already turned off by learning every monday through friday and I have to reinvigorate him on the weekend with at-home projects. That's because the quality of teachers has gone down. with high demand, job security, pension plan, decent hours, many bad teachers are jumping at the chance to work in incredible areas with smart kids, such as Fairfax County.

It is unfortunate that the teaching system (of which my wife is a part) is stuck in a 19th century methodology of teaching the masses to act in unison. It is as if they're preparing these kids for the rote factory jobs of yesterday instead of the knowledge-critical jobs of today. What factory jobs are you talking about? Oh you meant your IT job :-P
I'm completing my masters in EE while substitute teaching at the moment, so I see the full grade spectrum. Kids aren't bored from the teaching tech (or lack there of), they are bored because of the lack of motivation and slow pace. There is more of a push these days to fill kids with information instead of having them learn it.

I've yet to find one instance in my work (IT manager over about 60 people in a large government agency with roughly 60 servers, 1,500 staff members and 18TB of data online) where I had to fill out a scantron form or decide which option was best - a, b, c, d, or all of the above. Ooh, ooh, can i please answer this one?? what about when you are making decision like buying servers or hardware and figuring out which option is the best.

As it is, I'm on the school site council, PTA and am constantly talking to the administration in my sons' school district. They just don't seem to want to 'get it.' Though I don't feel it's the teacher's responsibility to excite the student 100% on the topic or subject being taught, parents need to do their part instead of work 60 hours a week at a dead end job like most of these kids I deal with. And yes a corporate job making a 7 figure salary to me is dead end when you rarely see your family.

So you want to get paid by the hour for a menial job that you don't want to be at? That's a healthier attitude? Most people take the Salary job because they'll put up with the menial job for 40 (or 50) hours as long as a good chunk of that time is spent doing something other than the job they are getting paid for. I'd love to see you rack and cable servers for 40+ hours a week. It's very motivating to see the other Googlers go to Social events like ski trips and parties while you have to bite your tongue. For a Data Center Tech position interview, my Mountain View HR rep didn't send me directions to the hidden data center in Atlanta (or the hotel the interviews were being done, to keep the location private). I decided to Google (Map) it, and didn't realize I had found their sales office in Atlanta. I sat in the reception area while a Sales employee was baffled as to why I was there, until he asked if it was for the Data Center. I told him to call the HR Rep, who wasn't answering my phone. Luckily though I was severely late, everthing worked out. The interview was one of the toughest ever but I kept my cool. Of course, then she forgot to call me several weeks later about whether I got the position or not. I had to call her and her response was that she was meaning to call me about my offer. I didn't take the position for other reasons, but I found out that A) she was a contracted employee and B)she longer works there anymore. So it goes to show, just because you have one person representing a company who might fsck up, doesn't mean the rest of the company is on the same level.

Facebook's infratstructure is getting overwhelmingly big. They included a photo uploading section because, well people obviously love photos. But their original plan was to distribute the photo load by allowing users to locally host their photos and use a program called Wirehog (I believe) to turn their computer into a share point. This failed because of the complexity and security. The also are looking to hire many people to code and develop as well as maintain their servers (stripped down fedora). I'm not sure what their profits are, but this 25 mil sounds really justified.
