If you live in a dorm room and are not in a major directly related to computers, I would highly recommend a laptop. They take up less space, a commodity in a dorm room or even a college apartment. They also make it easier to have a computer when a group meets since they are portable. Many people in school don't use a computer for gaming so a laptop will suffice. Even if they do want a computer for gaming, you can find laptops capable of gaming for about $1200 (HP's 17in screem model). For non-gamers, a laptop cam be as cheap as $600.

As far as upgrading, a desktop is nice but most people don't upgrade their machines. Most people that read slashdot do but most others don't. Non-computer people will want to upgrade after 3-4 years because their computer is 'slow'. At that time, a new machine is about the same price as the upgrades that they need or want.

Even if you do lock it, if somebody tries really hard, they can get into it. Adding functionality to Linux may expose more security issues but it will make it more useful to the common user.

I don't think this is about a level playing field. The thing about radio is nobody has to listen to it. If they are playing stuff you don't like, you can listen to a different station. Clear-channel may own a lot of stations but people are listening to those stations because they like the music. I don't think payola is a good practice. I do think it should be illegal, however, I don't think that good artists remain unknown because others are paying for airtime. That is because they aren't really that good.

If people wanted to listen to these indie labels, they would request it or listen to the Public Access stations that already play them, but they don't. Oh, the commercials are over. I need to get back to listening to the next 20 min of music. . . .

About a month ago me and two other developers at work took a few days and learned to type dvorak. We only had to go through the tutorial once to learn the layout.

After a month, I still slip on some keys but all three of us are typing at about 40 wpm. I do find it more comfortable but it was a lot of work to learn it and I was useless as a developer for a week and a half. I still am pretty slow at vi and java is harder to code with the braces ({}) up where - and + are on QWERTY.

As far as switching back and forth, it isn't easy. Yesterday I used my wife's computer without switching it to DVORAK. I had to look at the keyboard a lot and I was definitely slower. It has also made typing in DVORAK harder today for the first ten minutes.

Overall, I would recommend the switch if you have the time. Good luck.

The problem is that IT didn't start as a business facing department. They started as a bunch of people who thought (correctly) that they could improve the business with computers and software. Their budgets increased and they became incredibly large. Eventually, the IT department started determining the direction of the entire company. 5-10 years later the business is finally trying to reclaim control of IT. This is why the most secure jobs are "business-facing."
