I wish that I had mod points. I hear what you're saying and can attest to this same problem with my nephew. He's 14 and is afraid to go into stores by himself, etc. Heck most kids when I was growing up had to ride their bikes over to the grocery store for mom all the time even when we were about 8 years old or so.
Hey, I'm a childless adult so according to all the "parents" I've spoken with my opionions do not count. Okay, so here is my observation:
Kids nowadays spend all their time in front of video games, don't even know how to ride bikes (my nephew just learned at age 13 to ride a bike and so did his friends), never play ball in their yard and have schedules or routines that plan out their times at school, after school and at home on the weekend. Everything is planned and scheduled instead of impulse.
Come on, most people that care already have the DVDs and Firefly is just another great sci-fi show that was cancelled just like a bunch before it. On Labor Day Sci-Fi ran marathons of Dark Angel which was my favorite show back in the day just as Firefly was. Guess what, Dark Angel isn't going to be making a comeback and neither is Firefly. Yeah, sure maybe in 20 years they will remake it just as they did Battlestar Galactica but I'm not going to sit in the basement with my 20-sided die and wait.
I've seen Firefly a bunch on my DVDs but I'm to the point now that I probably won't bother to take it off the shelf and pop it into the DVD player to see it *BUT* if I'm flipping channels and it's on I'll probably watch. *AND* if it's a marathon *AND* there isn't anything else on Sci-Fi probably just gained some extra viewers for that day.
That is it. No conspiracy, no ulterior motives to bring back the series or even another movie. *PERIOD*
Maybe it is for security. Hackers will be busy trying to change the startup sound. Plus as soon as security has been breeched it will be completely obvious even to Joe Sixpack.
Why does it have to be one or the other? How about some PCs with Windows and some with Linux. Not all machines have to be Microsoft OS/Office/Outlook/etc. but at the same time why migrate all machines? I know, I know, to save money but how about saving some money (most money perhaps) migrate a good chunk of machines to Linux and teach the kids commandline, Open Office, free software and still let them use Windows as well.
Why teach kids that everything in life is just one or the other. Let's have the best of both worlds. Heck, let's throw some Macs into the mix as well.
Patent 100: Method for eating waffels upside down shot down due to prior art.
Patent 101 now becomes 100. Free unlimited energy from nothing joins public domain. Yay!
Medical use comes to mind as there are already "vending machines" networked to reduce prescription drug screw ups in hospitals as well as a way account for who took what drugs from inventory and for what patient.
These are very intelligent companies. I tried to get the company that I used to work for to buy me a few books and start a library but I guess that they thought there was a catch or that I'd never give up the books. I dunno. It got tied up in red tape until I just went and bought the few books I was wanting. Mainly some scripting books so that I could create better scripts.
Once my immediate manager saw some of the scripts I was starting to make he wanted to borrow one of my books. I told him "no way". If he wants to borrow books then the company needs to buy them as I would not share my personal books on those very grounds.
Try the Trackman Marble that you roll with your thumb instead. They still make it (just checked) and I have been using one for well over 10 years. I'm only on my second one. You may hate it at first but stick with it for a day to get the feel of it then you'll be in mouse heaven. And it definitely helps the mouse syndromes not to mention that marble technology virtually eliminates mouse jumping on the screen as you are probably already aware.
I'd bet that the $2.00 fee is designed for peak times (Friday/Saturday nights) when all the games are being used. How about the ability to easily reprice based on times? Would you be willing to pay $.25 on a Tuesday morning and $2.00 on Friday nights? Something to think about.
You already have specialization in A.I. so I would suggest getting your foot in the door at a company that works in A.I. if you aren't already. Let them send you to school for your M.S.
Depeding where this position is located will solve the problem of just getting an M.S. in CompSci or a more specialized degree.
My former CIO would definitely go for a "biztone". Basically he already had them except that they were text messages that would be paged to some of us in the department. Various (quasi-)informative messages such as "Day End processing completed", "payroll processing completed" and "interface XYZ has failed", "interface XYZ restarted automatically". Stupid shit like that. He'd probably assign them all a separate "biztone" or something.
Of course we had fun with it. We made up our own messages such as "lunchtime", "time to go home". He was such a PHB. I'm sure other PHBes would like biztones as well.
True. Nothing is 100%. Each person just has to weigh the pros/cons of each procedure. IMHO eye surgery in most cases is more like plastic surgery than a real medical procedure. It doesn't have to be done to correct eyesight.

My observation is that this is fucked up.
Great example, wrong company.

I'm sure anything like a hotel in space will be sold. And if it's not then perhaps space pirates will claim it.
Maybe it is for security. Hackers will be busy trying to change the startup sound. Plus as soon as security has been breeched it will be completely obvious even to Joe Sixpack.
Even Lamer... schedule the email firings to be mailed in an hour. Then leave early.
Even Better... delete the email and keep coming to work. Claim you never received the message and that it must have gotten caught in the spam filter.
In this case shielding wouldn't work anyway. If someone wanted to hack the network they would just hang out in the waiting area with a laptop.

How about every 100th patent automatically goes into the public domain?
Or, even "Bare Naked Ladies".
Beowulf cluster, a.k.a. "six-pack".
It scales well to 12-pack and a full 24 machine "case".
Medical use comes to mind as there are already "vending machines" networked to reduce prescription drug screw ups in hospitals as well as a way account for who took what drugs from inventory and for what patient.
I must be getting old since there was not one single joke about The Fonz.
Perhaps he used this technology to control jukeboxes.

BTW I do not work for Logitech.
Dressed as a pizza delivery man and carrying hot, aromatic pizza works, too.
Great, we can use the source against the robots after they take over.
Shiver me timbers!

Just imagine robotic chairs controlled by Microsoft code. *shudder*
