Actually "foolhardily harming their ecosphere" is the natural thing to do. Not enough predators around to keep populations under control, population explodes eating everything in sight damaging the ecosystem, animals all starve, population is reduced drastically, ecosphere has time to recover and hopefully some sort of equilibrium is achieved.
People are doing that we just haven't gotten to the starve state yet.
BUT, the main purpose of a lot of this research is to create things that kill, or things that protect you from others trying to kill you. I wouldn't have so much of a problem with it if it only ever was for the latter kind, but a lot of this fundamental research is going to go in to more efficient weapons.
Interesting this has come up in what is nominally an evolution "discussion". What is the big driver behind evolution? Survival of the fittest. A lives B dies, A gets B's resources and reproduces. Seems to me that this is the same thing happening on a societal level. One country spends resources on defense research, gets a new "mutation" in the form of a better bomb, kills other country, takes resources, repeats.
I guess you could argue that building a better bomb isn't "fitter" but it seems that by darwin's standards it kinda is.
Well if we follow this path of criminalizing hiding things from the watchers to its logical conclusion of outlawing of blinds and/or requiring large picture windows, I think I'll sell my house next to the fat people before it loses all value and move to southern Cali...

Conversely, servers that better players frequent would be more likely to recognize and bust cheaters. Whereas the n00b servers, people would be more likely to just think the guy was really good, die alot, and give up on the game.

Why did I start reading that thinking "your own moon" in place of our? And why did it make more sense that way? I think your ruse is getting thin.
They are no longer even pretending that children have any rights in school. The problem that I have with this is that the children then grow up thinking that this is how things are suppose to be, and don't complain when they get their rights taken away as an adult.
But that's the plan. They're educating them. The priorities are just different. You and I think they should be taught reading, writing, and arithmetic, but they want to teach how to be a "good citizen".

Additionally, it's well and good that children who get chicken pox are only sick for a short time and very rarely have long-term problems from the disease, but take a look over yonder and find out some more before you dismiss it as being no big deal. Specifically, it notes that even amongst children, about one in ten who contract the disease will suffer complications serious enough to see a doctor, and, yes, it's possible for chicken pox to kill. Why take the chance if people can be vaccinated against it? Having taken that look over yonder I still don't think it's a big deal. 100 people a year die, so? More people get shot in Boston each year. Call me a donkey hole but whatev.
Well if they didn't create diseases then what would the growth potential be once they cured everything? You have to think of the stockholders! They have more money than the children anyway.
I think they're coming out with a chickenpox vaccine...now that's a bad idea. Kids sick for a week, then immune, or vaccinate everyone wait a generation for a serious outbreak...
