I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you PPC fanatics? I've been sitting here at my freelance gig in front of a PC Mac (a G5/2.0 w/1024 RAM) for about 20 minutes now while it attempts to copy a 17 Meg file from one folder on the hard drive to another folder. 20 minutes. At work, on my Developer Mactel (Pentium 4 3.4 w/1024 RAM), which by all standards should be the same speed this Mac, the same operation would take about 2 minutes. If that.
In addition, during this file transfer, Safari will not work. And everything else has ground to a halt. Even SubEthaEdit is straining to keep up as I type this.
I won't bore you with the laundry list of other problems that I've encountered while working on various PPC Macs, but suffice it to say there have been many, not the least of which is I've never seen a PPC Mac that has run faster than its Mactel counterpart, despite the PPC's faster chip architecture. My 486/66 with 8 megs of ram runs faster than this 300 mhz machine at times. From a productivity standpoint, I don't get how people can claim that the PPC Macintosh is a superior machine to the x86 Macintosh.
PPC addicts, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to use a PPC Mac over the faster, cheaper, and more stable x86 system.
The Sony Ericsson phones offer great compatibility. I have used the T68i, the T610, and now a K700 with iSync. All were great, and all complement the look of my PowerBook. I prefer to make headshot photos on the Mac and xfer them over Bluetooth to the K700 so I can use better looking photos. The camera is sufficient for a cellphone, but if you want something more, SE just released the K750. Unfortunately, iSync doesn't work natively with the K750 without modifying some files.
I recently bought a $500 Windows smart phone (includes a camera and a music player which plays MP3s) and I'm extremely happy with it (yes, it does crash once a week, but it's a small tradeoff for all the good features).
Crashing once a week is acceptable for a premium smartphone?
COMDEX is not the big deal it was, and in its absence, other smaller shows have come in to fill the (much reduced) demand for this kind of tech convention. There is no place in the market for COMDEX anymore.
Is there a website that tracks all these conferences? Except for the big ones like CES, CeBit, etc, the small ones don't get that much press. I want a site that lists every tech conference, be it Photoshop World or Apple's WWDC.
I'm waiting on Tiger so I can buy a Mac mini to use as a test server. Thing is, Apple has historically released OS X updates on the 24th of the month, and that falls on a Sunday. If no major issues in the FC, perhaps it will ship on Fri the 22.
There is no upgrade version of 10.3. It's the full version. The only upgrade was for users that purchased a new machine after Panther hit gold master, and they got it for $20.
XP Home full version is $116.99: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000 05MOTF/qid=1110654316/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/102-4908 955-6674502?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846
XP Pro (which I think is a better comparison for OS X) full is $269.99: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00022PTI4/ qid=1110654429/sr=2-2/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_2/102-4908955 -6674502
The iPod display gets all song metadata from a database file, not the tags on the individual song files.
Not true. I've copied songs from one machine to another, and the song data gets transfered. Even the album cover is stored in the file. Certain things like playcounts however are stored in the iTunes Library file though.
The Finder is nothing like the Start button. It is like Windows Explorer. If you want something like a Start Button for your commonly used apps, create a folder somewhere (mine is called QuickLaunch) and then put aliases/shortcuts to your applications in there. You can even create subfolders if you like. Now drag your Quicklaunch folder to the right-side of the Dock and it will stay there. Now everytime you want to get to your apps, right-click that folder and up pops a list of your apps, just like the Start button in Windows.
If you don't want to go through all that, you can always just click Finder and then click on the Applications icon in the sidebar to jump directly there. And when you feel you're ready to learn keyboard shortcuts, go in to the Mouse&Keyboard Preference pane and you will find a list of them (you can change them too).
Has the PC industry really gotten that bad so that they don't do anything but copy Apple? First eMachines copies the iMac, now Intel is trying to show that PCs can be mini too. I know it's a mockup, but do something original instead of copying the color of the mini.
Why is it so hard to make a decent-looking case that doesn't look like someone riced it up with stupid lights or clear plastic? I just ordered the parts to build a PC, and the hardest part was finding a case that didn't look like crap. I wasn't successful.
And what would happen if a virus/trojan went and added that WINE registry entry? Would updates stop working so users wouldn't be able to install patches? Thanks Microsoft!
Not sure if the bandwidth requirements are there yet, but it would be an interesting proposition. iPod::iTMS, TiVo::iMVS (iMovie Video Store). Given TiVo's crapping on the Mac lately by not supporting AAC and no Mac support for TiVo2Go, I think this is purely wishful-thinking on the analyst's part.
The cable companies can more efficiently provide the same services that TiVo can provide. They haven't completely duplicated the service of TiVo yet but they have charged a heck of a lot less. What can TiVo provide that cable companies can't/don't that justifies the cost? No offense intended to you or TiVo of course.

Apple has successfully use subpoenas in the past. However, if they lost this case, they would have no ability to legally threaten people in the future.
AC, I applaud you on using trademark law to make it seem like Apple has to sue. I'm sure that joke went over a lot of people's heads, including the people that moderated you Interesting.
Right, it worked so well for Tiger Direct.

Right, because the consequence would be, um, that you stay dead.

It's actually Control-click. It's not a troll if you're a Mac user. ;)
I use a Mac, you insensitive clod!!
This is obviously the PowerBook G5. Not shown is the processor, which will be incorporated into the power supply. :)
Um, how about an explanation on what setuid and setguid actually does first, and then I'll tell you if I'm stunned.

Welcome to 2005.
Go watch Boston Legal sometime. Shatner rocks in it.

Hey if the RIAA can use the speed of a CD burner to estimate how many pirated CDs were made in a year, we can say that downloads=users. :)
Apple: one button to click, two fingers to scroll PC: two buttons to click, one finger to scroll :)
Nobody is forcing you to watch it, but there are those of us who enjoy the show.
X11 isn't installed by default. You have to do a custom Panther install.
