the problem is getting replacement parts to the station in time (measured in weeks). their current system is still working, and they have abut 15 days of chemical backup even if that system fails.
From Paul Tatara's review: (my emphasis)
"The inexplicable box office bonanza of "Scary Movie" (2000) will keep Wayans and his equally unnecessary brothers working for years to come"
Heh, when I first read that I thought "holy shit, what a racist bastard", and then I realized that he didn't mean "brotha's" but rather fraternal relations.
the author is only profiling 1070 items that he found... assuming freenet isn't really *that* small (and if it *is*, then why are we bothering to talk about it?), then this sample is way too small to generate any accurate stats.
All told, this is yet another reduction in quality for theatrical presentations. What's there to be excited about?
Among other things, it makes it a lot easier to MAKE movies. Film is a pain in the ass to work with, and expensive on a per minute basis. Ironically this isn't that big of a deal for big productions like Star Wars (and I can't understand why they are the ones first adopting it, especially since it has to be processed so much to add in the effects), but once this tech gets filtered down to the indie producers, I think we will see a lot more creative and fluid movies out. Think of this as a step UP for all those productions currently using video or crappy 16mm and 35mm equipment. These cameras will get as cheap as betacam rigs in a couple years.
It is a Good Idea(tm) to let only legitimate businesses willing to pay $2000 for one or two domain names, and not squatters collecting hundreds of these, register domain names under ".biz". In fact, it will most certainly unclutter the namespace sufficiently that the $1,000,000 price tags that some companies are now paying said squatters are a thing of the past.
Um, if the domain names are only $2,000 and squatters can sell them for up to $1,000,000, how do you see that stopping squatting? It makes it harder to START squatting (gotta get a lot of cash together), but the current squatting companies have already made enough money to keep buying more expensive names if the rates go up. Sure, they won't buy as MANY as before, but they will buy up all the good ones.
Anyone know why we don't have TRADEMARK squatters? What prevents a company from going out and registering a bunch of good ones?
If stolen MS code DOES get widely distributed, it would be pretty amusing for the OSS community to start anonymously sending them diff's to fix up the bugs in the stolen code. I'd like to see the face of the tech support droid who gets that email...
My x86 boxes are so hot, and noisy, that I'm tempted to wear headphone
If that's your main problem, get longer display and keyboard cables, and stick that machine in another room. No need to change mb architectures (buying a new mb, recompiling all your software, and some of it is only available for intel linux).
(this coming from a guy who really likes his PowerPC mac)
The tech specs linked to on that page mention that it gets six hours of continous use, or they estimate about 2 weeks of normal use (not if you are playing cool color games on it all day though!).
I'm sure this camera is useful for science, but forget about it being used for movies (or even video). The "high" resolution images are only 512x512 pixels.
I really wish that Sony and some of the other DV camera makers would add high frame rate captures to their cameras. Nothing NEAR this fast, but just 45 or 60 frames a second, just to enhance the motion a bit (lot's of movies and commercials use slightly slowed down images for emotional effect). I know that DV can handle that speed (you can 2x and 4x speed dub tapes), and I know the CCD's can capture that fast (they go up to 1000th's of a second).
I wonder what kind of quality it gets and how much you can store in it
Um, it was in the summary, just a few pixels above the reply button you hit to post your comment:
It features a 120x120 dot Monochrome display, and can store about 100 black and white images

Strong encryption won't do squat when they record your keystrokes straight off your PC.
Yeah, but how common is that compared to proxy firewalls filtering/logging content that passes through them? Most companies have all their internet traffic going through one box, so it's easy to scan. I think that an encrypted connection will keep the vast majority of people's email secret.
The state, with OUR tax money, paid for those lectures to be created, so they should be public domain and (i believe) even audio and video recordings should be redistributable, either for free or for a fee (a fee would presumably give someone reason to try to take the BEST notes, so that people will want to buy theirs).
This would open up (open source?;-) ) the educational process, and allow average citizens access to this info. Sure it's not nearly as good as actually being in the class, but it's something and doesn't cost much/anything. It would also allow profs at lower level schools (community college) to lift ideas from much better profs, which in turn would mean that their students are getting better educations than they may have otherwise. Where is the harm?
Apple would appreciate that if there are more systems available to view content generated by their systems
Cept of course linux is a teeny tiny market. Obviously not having support for linux isn't hurting the use of quicktime, since just about all the videos on major web sites are in quicktime format (as you say you "keep running into stuff [you] can not look at"). These sites would not use it if they were concerned about a significant portion of their users not being able to see it.
drop the holonomic drive??!! That's the coolest part! combined with the processing power of the palm, you can write all kinds of interesting navigation behaviors with this thing. attach a pen to it, and you could write legiblely in cursive.
unfortunately the company that sells the wheels has a $100 minimum order! (well, actually a $25 extra service charge for orders under $100) anyone in the sf bay area want to pitch in with me on buying some wheels? i'm planning on building a modified version of this (possibly using an OOPic (www.oopic.com) as the processor instead of a Palm, mainly because i'm interesting in learning to program the oopic).
When iClick on the shiny button that says "Buy now with 1-click(r)" that is under a picture of a mouse or software, it does NOT take allow me to buy that mouse or software with one click, OR even take me to a screen where I can buy that mouse or software at all! It takes me to a screen telling me how cool 1-Click(r) is! Argh!
Is Jeff Bezos giving Steve blowjobs or something? What's up with this?
Hardware:
350mhz B&W G3 Mac - 192mb/15gig
Sony TRV900 Camera (great camera! a cheaper one chip camera would work just as well for digitizing though)
Apex 600A DVD player (with macrovision turned off - this is important)
Software:
Apple's Final Cut Pro (for editing. a great program!)
MediaCleaner (for compressing, kinda sucky but the best thing i've found)
If you really want to just edit and do compositing with DVD movies, you don't need to (and shouldn't) convert them to DivX. Just use them in as uncompressed a format as you can. Or if you have a DVD player that can output without copy protection (like the Apex), your best bet would be to record the svideo out directly to your DV camera, and then firewire that into your computer (along with the shots you made yourself). I did this with some shots from FightClub (to make an incredibly lame "Wassup" spoof), and the quality was great.
though it does seem like it SHOULD be "Unibomber". I thought he got the name because at first he was sending bombs to professors at universities, hence "uni-bomber". But I guess most people pronounce "university" with a "una" sound, so it was spelled that way.
