I was a happy Firefox user for years, before finally switching to Safari when FF became more than unresponsive.

The problem, according to the many help forums, was I had "too many extensions" installed, and that I should "create a new profile".

I resented being punished for using the extensions system that Mozilla so heavily promoted, so I switched.

And now I've got AdBlock back, and use ClickToFlash, 2 extensions which installed right from the web page with no restart required. Now I'm a happy Safari user.

Clearly. But they shouldn't have done.

They have a review process. They should use it properly.

It's Apple's app store. They are the ones selling the wares. It's up to them to make sure they adhere to the appropriate laws.

Crying "But the developer tricked me!" just doesn't cut it.

  3. Re:Apple is indeed shooting itself in the foot. on VLC Developer Takes a Stand Against DRM Enforcement · · Score: 1

The submitter of the app misrepresented it as being compatible with Apple's distribution scheme, including DRM.

And Apple misrepresented that submission as being compliant with Apple's distribution scheme, and in doing so accepted into their store a GPL-licenced product and added their own DRM, and failed to pass on copies of the GPL licence to people who downloaded the software.

Both the app submitter and Apple are in the wrong here. The submitter of the app should have known better, he/she would have known that Apple were going to infect the software with DRM.

And Apple should have rejected the app on the grounds that they were unable to adhere to the terms of the GPL licence.

Silly freetards, the pair of them.

Apple really couldn't care less about what Corporate types think. Microsoft do - and Apple look at Microsoft's PC offering and believe it to be held back by catering for what Corporate types think. They're not pushing Macs into business. Some businesses buy Macs, but more businesses are buying iPhones, and that's where the big money is, and that's where Apple is concentrating its efforts.

  14. Re:Ignorance on Survey Says Most iPhone Users Love AT&T · · Score: 3, Insightful

Actually, I think it's just ignorance and lack of technical knowledge from the users. Apple and its users tend to run around telling how great their products are and there are no faults in anything. They most likely think it must be the same thing with every device.

Not so sure about that - 50% of Mac buyers are 'new to Mac', and so have plenty of experience of other platforms, and their imperfections.

And the iPhone has only been around for a few years, so almost anyone that owns one will have owned some other brand of phone before, so they too will be more than aware of what the user experience is like on a 'non-apple' phone.

Another great example of this ignorance (and misinformation spread by Apple) is that Mac OSX is virus-free and will stay so, while in fact there have been several recent instances of malware on OSX. The funny thing is that because Apple spreads these lies and users blindly trust them, they also are ignorant and can't see it. It's the classic lalalalala.

Ignorance is what is happening here too.

There is, regrettably, a vocal group of apple users who spread this kind of stuff, but I'm not sure apple specifically say their OS is virus-proof. I think they point out that their computers can't 'catch' PC viruses, but they don't specifically say that a virus can't be written for the mac.

Now, you could argue that apple should make it clear that malware exists for their platform. But with any malware attack yet to gain any meaningful level of traction, perhaps it's fair enough that they keep that smug grin on their face for now?

Would you expect a measurement of the speed of car driving through downtown on a busy day while obeying all traffic laws to be anything close to the car's maximum speed?

No, I'd expect a "measurement of the speed of car driving through downtown on a busy day while obeying all traffic laws" to be reasonably close to the speed limit for that road, not the maximum speed limit of the car.

Why would you expect a the number to be higher?

Because the fastest speed according to the article is way, way slower than the advertised speed. I mean, there's a huge difference. We're not talking 1 or 2Mbps.

I would expect it to be higher because from my 20Mbps connection, I get about 16. Sometimes 17. So from my experience, I get reasonably close to what my connection is supposed to offer.

Which is why I am surprised that the average speed in the US is much slower. I don't live there, which is probably why I'm surprised.
