  1. Re:Conflicting Feelings on Bully Gets In Trouble With School · · Score: 4, Insightful

Just my two cents: I was also bullied when I was young, but the important thing here is that the game will almost certainly get the highest rating allowed - meaning kids shouldn't be able to buy it in the first place.

Why wasn't Fight Club banned when adults could legally go see it in theatres? Surely it would have provoked an international emergency with sensible adults suddenly beating each other up in the streets.

The content of the game aside, these people are almost admitting that parents will buy the game for their kids anyway. This is totally the wrong approach, they should be campaigning to raise awareness of the game's content to parents so that they don't buy it for their kids, making sure they follow THE LAW.

If you're talking about Nintendo then you've misunderstood whatever you read/heard.

Nintendo have not named a single game that will be available for download, merely that they will make some old games available. And thus far the assumption I've read has been that they will be charging for them. Free first-party Nintendo classics would be awesome but I seriously doubt that will happen, beyond a possible "Free Super Mario All-Stars" with the Revolution console.

I wish I was rich, I'm a 19 year old at university. However, During the PSX and early PS2 days I was at school and had lots of time on my hands and didn't have anything I needed to spend the money I had on - so games ahoy!

  4. Re:anyone else? on Sony Plans Digital Distribution? · · Score: 1

I think you'd be able to download the whole game in one go if you want, it's just that you'd be able to run the game once the first chunk was downloaded rather than have to wait until the end. I doubt the download would actually stop until you'd completed the first level though :P

To be perfectly honest I think that since you don't have broadband Sony probably wouldn't care about you much with regards to digital distribution. The next gen of consoles is going to see a real divide between people with high-speed internet access and those without it, on a larger scale than we've seen on the PC I think.

  6. Re:anyone else? on Sony Plans Digital Distribution? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I think you misunderstand. The "streaming" of old games that was suggested would most likely be similar to Steam's function where you can start playing Half-Life 2 once you've got the first level downloaded. The later levels download to your PC as you play so you don't have to wait for the whole thing to finish before you start. It's not so much "only getting to download part of the game" as "only having to download part of the game".

I doubt any prices will be quoted for months, especially since this all rumour anyway. For my part, I've pretty much played all the PSX and PS2 games I wanted to (a few future PS2 releases aside), but I really hope Nintendo make a lot of their SNES and N64 games available - I've never owned a Nintendo console so would love to catch up on some classics with a Revolution.

Glad to hear there's someone else around who doesn't just laugh at strategy guides and think people who buy them are dumbasses. I think guides for some genres like FPS or sandbox games like The Sims are a bit pointless, but for sprawling RPGs their often invaluable.

I have to admit to being a bit of a fanboy for Piggyback's guides (http://www.piggybackinteractive.com/en/guides/ind ex.php?), which I've watched grow in variety since I first got their Final Fantasy VIII guide years back. I've since bought their guides for FFXI, FFX, FFX-2 and Kingdom Hearts, and every one is an excellent reference guide (the FFXI guide features some glaring ommissions however, these are downloaded seperately from Square's PlayOnline website using passwords from the guide - a horrible marketing gimmick). The Final Fantasy X-2 and KH guides especially are filled with beautiful artwork and checklists which save a lot of time when you're trying to 100% a game. Online text guides are great for finding out a statistic for a weapon or how to complete a quest, but when you want to make sure you totally beat a console RPG I've found the official strategy guide to often be better.

The sound processor is right at the other end of the hardware next to the part that deals with the encryption and stuff like that, i.e. the stuff Sony wouldn't want everyone to get their hands on who bought an £80 dev kit. Mate, do yourself a favour and try to come up to Abertay in Dundee. I'm on the 2nd year of the CGT course and loving it. We're learning useful things that are still used in the industry and so will actually be useful when we graduate. I don't know much about your course but I have a classmate from down that way who looked into both courses and settled on Abertay from its reputation.

Sorry to hear that you chose the course because of the Gamecube development, we've got 3 of the dev kits at our uni and none of them are used - it was some deal with Nintendo that never got off the ground I think. The lecturers are quite happy about it as apparently the GC dev kits are very restrictive in what we could do with them, whereas in our Playstation 2 games development the only thing we can't do with the Linux dev kits is gain full access to the sound programming (there's a good reason for it).

I can also assure you that the Abertay CGT degree carries weight in the industry - developers know the reputation of the course and know the graduates from it are equipped with useful skills. We have strong links with SCEE who actually sponser prizes for the Playstation 2 coursework I'm doing this semester.

If you've got any questions about the course and want them answered by a student who's doing it, ask away :)

Lots of people will want Ocarina of Time, but that's been available on the Gamecube with Wind Waker for a while. Majora's Mask is a little more difficult to get hold of though, so I can see Nintendo making both available pretty quickly for the Revolution.

There's the beauty of the Guild Wars model for me, when I played WoW I'd be annoyed if I couldn't play for an extended period of time (my trip to the USA for the whole of June last year, for example) since I'd be paying for that time even though I wasn't actually getting anything out of it.
