I have to agree with you on this, but it brought something to mind. If there wasn't fierce competition in this market we wouldn't necessarily have computers as fast as they are today, but we also wouldn't feel we need to upgrade software as much as we do. We wouldn't feel we need a faster computer and thus we wouldn't have to upgrade our computers every 7 years or less.
So yes in this situation it's great we're getting fasters products, but we're also as a society pushing for upgrading more and more and never being content with the computer and software we have currently.
In their article they say that Cid was in the Final Fantasy series since Final Fantasy 2. This is incorrect. He has actually been in every Final Fantasy. In Final Fantasy 1 he was the guy that used the TNT.
My sister is an Electrical Engineer. She didn't need any program like this to get into the field. She just wanted to do it, learned it, and got a job, just like anyone else would.
What's next they have a program to try to get more white males into pro basketball?
The main point that I agree with here is that you're doing something else productive, while procrastinating.
I've had many times this has happened. I'd procrastinate some assignment, but then my laundry gets done, my room gets clean, and my car gets clean. Yes I procrastinated, but I probably got more done then I would have had I not procrastinated.
Why should YouTube be responsible for this? I guess YouTube is giving an outlet for people to break copy write. However, any company that makes CD-R's is giving an outlet for people to do the same, but in that case the CD manufacturers are not responsible. Is there a difference because it's hosted online, so they're hosting illegal content?
Any person should already know it's illegal to post copy write material in this way. Even if you didn't know already I'm also sure YouTube's TOS covers this and you have to agree to the TOS to post anything on their site. So isn't the person posting the material doing the illegal act and the one who should be take responsibility?
Rats, I hate rats. They make me crazy. Crazy, I was crazy once. They locked me in a room. I died in that room and they buried me in the cold hard ground with rats. Rats, I hate rats. To definition lying, it's when you knowingly tell someone and untruth or knowingly mislead someone with your statement. If a boss planed on doing something for the employees, but doesn't end up doing it, they're not necessarily lying because their intent was to do it.
Honesty, on top of lying, has to do with being honorable in action, keeping integrity. If a boss continually fails to comply with their promises they may be honest in intent, but aren't so honest in action.
This is not to say your statement is false, only that it isnt necessarily an actuate deconstructing the headline.
only 49 percent of the test-takers correctly evaluated a set of Web sites for objectivity, authority and timeliness. Only 35 percent could correctly narrow an overly broad Internet search
Only 1 percent of the people taking the survey said they read slashdot.
My mom (53y.o.) said they were talking about doing that when she was in high school.
The problems included the need to re-model all computer systems to round to the nearest nickel. Secondly the US government would have to buy back all the now "worthless" pennies. It was estimated both those processes combined would take 10-20 years to effectively complete.
The thought of getting rid of the nickel is a mathematical nightmare I won't even get into.
RAM is volatile. What that means is whatever is in ram is lost when the power stops. ie. When you turn off your computer.
NRAM (non-volatile RAM) is in development now and that would keep data in RAM even when the computer is turned off. MRAM (magnetic RAM) is a type of NRAM that Ive heard of in development, I think there was a flash variant of NRAM as well, I cant remember the other types of NRAM in development right now. I haven't read the article, but there was one just posted on/., about PRAM, that may also have the same properties as NRAM.
NRAM would give the potential for instant on (or very fast) loading PCs.
Some times when things are better for the world, and not just your budget, it's a good reason to switch to them.
In correlation to your reply, if you stick by "I only care about cost" when you buy things, what kind of automobile do you drive?
I drive a 2001 Echo (37/41mpg) costing me $11,000. It's been driving just fine for 5 years now with only routine maintenance. I don't think anyone would argue that that is not a viable cost for a car, but do you have a car that costs less and has lasted as long as mine?
If you drive a truck of any sort your point on budget is pretty much moot.
If you dive an SUV, that probably costs 3 times as much as my car. That definitely doesn't seem viable for a car. For that 20k more you could have gotten solar panels, an Echo, saved money, and helped the environment in two ways.
If, however, you do drive a viable costing automobile, I'll put up for debate the idea that you're selfish and greedy, because right now it's very much in question.
They could make interesting 3d games with a lower level of graphics and better game play. For example Wii Sports, I've had so much fun in the last month playing Wii Tennis and Wii Bowling that I don't even want a new game any time soon. The joy and excitement of playing those games hasn't faded in the least bit yet.
What most 3d games are doing however is pushing the graphics to the max, making sweat drip down the characters (fight night), having a dynamic environment where even towns people interact with you based on your actions (assassins creed), making the environment more life like with shadows and lighting effects (god of war). These things among others add a lot to the cost of the game. Some times, as in the past, this has made companies give in to a little worse game play.
For me next-gen means they're bringing me something new and exciting. In that case it could be new/better game play, graphics, or physics. I guess I'd rather have all of them, but from playing the Wii I've realized the game play is what most if I had to pick between them all.

I read Slashdot at work, come on have some decency or at least forewarn us of stuff like that.

Course this will all be sorted out when computers can vote.
I can tell you now, mine votes against DRM.
The initial cost won't kill you. But the replacement cartridges, that's what'll do it.

Better start cramming for the finals.
Post an article about it on Slashdot.
As a US citizen I second this motion.
They should have a new slogan "Microsoft: Everything we make is in beta."
Oh I can beat that. I'm running two screens at 1280x1024, so technically 2560x1024.
New Years resolution: Try to be better than everyone else.
Winner!

I still want teleportation, le sigh.

I was going to write this an hour ago, but how could you have posted that yesterday when the story came out today?

Agreed. We could spend all that time and money they spend talking about arguing about child porn, to maybe feed and cloth homeless children.
You need three hands to run Vista.

And from whom would I get admiration from Anonymous Coward?
You should be arrested for misspelling Ben Affleck.
