an ironic comparison is metallica. if it wasn't for distribution and copying of their bootleg tapes, they might not have been discovered, gotten filthy rich, and then started suing their fans for distributing and copying their music.
huh? give ppl a way to give you money more easily and they open their wallets? imagine what could have been if they had embraced the internet back in the 90's instead of fighting it tooth and nail. just like audio tapes, just like video tapes. they fought so hard to stop these scary, uncontrolable, make-copying-easy technologies. and they turned into cash cows.
i've been trying to think of an example of something the govt provides that also provided by the private sector. is there a reason private schools don't claim unfair competition from the govt? any lawyers care to tackle this? is it because it's considered a "basic" service like roads and police? i wonder what things are considered ok for the govt to offer and what's not. gas, water, and electricity sound pretty basic to me. broadband probably sound pretty basic to most users here. maybe the things the govt is allowed to do is stuff that won't make a whole lot of money.
the govt is constantly giving this stuff away, should 3M file a lawsuit? seriously though, unless the govt is signing artists and setting up their own promo/disto channels, i don't see how they are competing with them. I would actually be against the govt doing so, even if they gave the music away for free. makes censorship that much easier. but giving away a few free songs? i wonder if we will send the US DOT after them too. Orrin Hatch probably thinks the british govts computer system should be put on fire.
the release schedule was something they moved to because of demand. they were releasing them frequently and randomly. now IT admins can plan for the patches. i believe they still release outside of the schedule if it's something that can't wait. so bash them for releasing them right away, or bash them for responding to demand and using a schedule. damned by/. if u do, damned by/. if u don't. well, at least if your m$. didn't oracle move to something like this too?
when microsoft releases security updates, it's cuz the software is crap. when others do it, it's cuz the software rocks. no double standards here. maybe it's like when girls get naked. if she's good looking, makes it better. if your she's bad looking, much worse. microsoft may be bloated, but needs love just like everyone else.
i don't think a lot of time is wasted. most jobs are requiring more and more availibility. this doesn't mean you are working the entire time, but are there for what needs to be done. employees who are professional will drop the "goofing off" and do what needs to be done when it needs to be done. the type that want to waste time instead of working did so before the internet, and will find other ways if the internet isn't an option anymore. it's like asking "how much time does the water cooler waste?" flex time and broadband are making things even more flexible. it lets you do the work that needs to be done, while not wasting time commuting, cutting down office space, etc. of course this only works with employees who won't take advatage of it. they still have to wake up for business hours. if you are hiring ppl u don't trust to take the work seriously and have to micromanage, you aren't doing your job right.
except they started using "starter" cartridges that aren't full with new ones. i guess they see it as whatever gas that comes with the new car is what you get, doesn't have to be a full tank. with gas prices climbing the way they are, maybe i'll have to buy a new car instead of getting a fill up:)
seriously though, all these TLDs are just making the net more confusing. it used to be you had to remember the part between "www." and ".com". if it was an edu or org, it was still kinda obvious. now you have to remember the proper TLD also, unless every one of your favorite sites buys up all of the TLDs.
that depeends. are you the only museum around and thus have a stranglehold on art? do you get to define what art is because of this? are you pricing it so that you and the few artists you display can live so richly that vh1 has "the fabulous life of.." episodes about u? is part of the admission cost going to security to prevent ppl from sneaking in, thus causing the price to go up, thus more ppl to try to sneak in? r you using your money and influence to get politicians to back your cause? i think these need to be addressed before deciding right and wrong.
or in the case of CEOs, costing thousands of ppl their jobs and pensions. this is a lot worse than writing a virus, IMHO. esp since the virus writer isn't draining the funds from others into their own accounts.
LOL, so instead of moving to laptops, they will move to tablets... stone tablets. btw, how is it that the word of god doesn't get a 5 star rating on amazon?
it sounds like you are talking about something along the lines of the simputer stuff in india. i can't see publishers having that much sway. even if they did, wouldn't they want more ppl using the devices so they could sell to them? btw, i don't think m$ and intel are the only companies in the laptop business.
i guess raincoast is taking notes from jobs. rarely do u see this kind of zeal for release dates. someone knows too much too early, oh the humanity! all part of the hype machine. btw, i am the only one who read the company's name as "raincoaters"?
I guess all new books books, music, and movies will come with some kind of nda from now on. i really don't understand why u would care about ppl talking about your product. unless u knew it sucked really bad or something. i heard someone dies in the book, so maybe they wanna keep the suspense. but some ppl would know before others anyway (faster shipping, faster reading, etc). the conspiracy theorist in me thinks it's all planned, to secure more time on the evening news. cuz u know only the really important stories are reported.

the title brought a song to my head: i will survive!
all together now!

this guy must have not wasted a single second!

pretty soon landfills will be mostly diapers and printers.

ok, i'll bite (pun intended). i was thinking about the striped part.
now you've got me thinking bass

every time i see the words "raid offices" i think of that scene from boiler room.

maybe i'll go back to HS and get my GED in AZ.
you're a /. reader and your not already pale?
