    problem is, Drupal ecommerce (and ubercart, et al) don't run on Drupal's current stable release. And Drupal 4/5 leave a lot to be desired.
    I question the relevance of a book written about outdated, unsupported ecommerce tech.

    Your analogy doesn't work.
    All of the in-store loss mitigation measures you mention do not annoy legit customers as an unavoidable consequence of their employment.
    LGP's "solution" will annoy only legit users. The riffraff won't be bothered at all.

    XviD is technically open source, but not "open" in the ways that matter to Sun's target audience. Same thing with x264 - an incredibly popular codec that's unusable for enterprises unless you license the patents.

    The reason Theora exists: it's the least horrible fully-open (beer, speech) codec available.
    Keep your eyes on Dirac, someday you'll be able to play Dirac-encoded stuff on a home computer.

    I got measles (and incredibly sick) from the MMR vaccine supposedly designed to "prevent" the measles. One bad experience pretty much ensured that at least one person on slashdot won't believe the hype around vaccines and their effectiveness.

    Another funny thing: the nurses at my school, and my family physician, used this argument to convince me to get more shots - "if you don't get vaccinated, you might infect your friends"
    Almost as if they didn't believe in vaccine either...

    IIRC the pocket projector comes with built-in nuclear power generation so you'll need a bit of external cooling capacity, but then you don't need batteries at all. Costco already has a contract to bring these out in September.
