  1. Because it is KANSAS on Kansas Anti-Creationism Professor Resigns · · Score: 1

This is not so much Christian bashing as conservative bashing. Go to Kansas. There may be a synagogue or two, maybe a mosque somewhere. In order for someone to be not Christian and in Kansas, they would have to be a little progressive. At whom do you point the finger when ultra-conservative jerks beat up a progressive professor in Kansas? Christians, mostly.

I call bullshit. You may read the part that says "hit page down" or "press f7 to accept" but nobody reads EULAs from start to finish. Also, using Firefox alone is not enough to really save you from the dangers of the internet; you still must be smart enough not to go to the shady sites that attempt to force malware upon you.

  4. Re:I believe it on 50% of HDTV Owners Don't Use HD · · Score: 3, Interesting

My grandparents bought a HD LCD and watch mostly 4x3 SD channels... in wide zoom mode "so the picture fills up the screen instead of being so small." The center area of the their television where a 4x3 picture would be displayed is nearly a foot bigger than my TV, but I suppose old folks need the biggest picture possible. Attempting to explain that they should watch 16x9 mode with letterboxing is futile. At least the digital sound on the HD channels is clearer than SD stereo.

If you think HD sports and HD Discovery channel are nice, you must not have seen HD PBS yet. "Viewers like you" do a fabulous job getting the latest tech into the hands of skilled TV producers, yielding amazing widescreen programs with remarkable sound.

  5. USB Speed and Wi-Fi Saturation on Review of the Squeezebox · · Score: 1

My biggest issue was that the external drive was connected via USB 1.1 and scanning the 35 gigs of music stored there took over an hour.

This seems more of an issue with having the drive connected by USB 1.1 than an issue with the software.

I ran the Squeezebox for several hours while working and downloading a few Torrents, with no issue whatsoever.

Perhaps it is just me, but I've never found bittorrent to choke my wi-fi connection. It does have a lot of packets going in and out, but nowhere near the capacity of my 802.11g router. If you use unwise settings for your network, such as kajillions of connections per torrent, you're likely to exceed the bandwidth of your broadband connection before you get into trouble with your wi-fi network.

I've been eyeing the Squeezebox for a while due to my obsession with FLAC since buying fancy headphones, but have been scared away by the price tag. I can't justify buying a $300 component until I have a better receiver.

  7. F-22 problem on Rat Brains Fly Planes · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm not saying the F-22 can "fly itself" but the latest generations of fighter planes have been increasingly geared toward reducing the complexity of flight. Get these rat brains to fly twin engine propeller planes with simple/no computers and it'll be noteworthy.

  8. Meter Reader on E-Tracking May Change the Way You Drive · · Score: 2, Insightful

Why not just check the odometer? Most if not all cars have odometers, and few people tamper with them. Most drivers could simply get their mileage checked whenever they have their vehicle inspected and/or renew the vehicle's license plates. Any taxes based on emissions could be assessed on fuel rather than based on mileage. I could drive my car 45 mph to my parents and take 20 hours and use far less gas than my friend who drives there at 80 mph in 12 hours.

Most racing wheels are not giant mirrors but have some amount of openness for airflow and weight savings. At different speeds, the eye tricks you into seeing the wheels spinning at rates different than those at which they actually spin. An enhancement to realism that would improve this game vastly would be realistic aliasing effects on the wheels. Kajillion polygon real wheels would not be necessary if one instead used an alpha channel for transparency and a texture on the surface to give the illusion of spinning.

  24. OSX? Get in line. on Ask John Smedley About Star Wars Galaxies · · Score: 0, Offtopic

Games+OSX should not be Sony's first priority. Until they do something to appease the thousands of owners of USB-compatible Sony MiniDisc players, you are unlikely to see them catering to Apple Mac owners who want to play games. Sony has singlehandedly wrecked the MiniDisc train by writing jukebox software that is only Windows 98/2000/(ME lol)/XP compatible. Minidisc owners have been bitching for years and getting nothing from it, so you're unlikely to see a quick change for whining game owners.
