  13. Re:Forget other players. Here's what I want. on What Kind Of Star Trek MMO Do You Want? · · Score: 1

Why does every MMO have to be the same as every other MMO?

Star Trek is going to be very boring if I'm the engineer and all I do during an epic space battle is run from console to sparking exploding console and press the "fix" button. Star Trek doesn't work if you're just one lowly ensign. It's just not fun.

Now, take a completely different approach to the MMO formula, and you have something interesting:

Your main character is your ship. You level the ship up, get new crew, and eventually scrap it for a more expensive model.

You get a crew that you familiarize yourself with and grow to care about. You can switch control to any of these bridge members during the game. During exploration, you probably want to play as helm control. During battle: tactical. Having engine troubles? Play as the Chief of Engineering. Let me play as EVERY member of my crew.

When it's time for an away mission, let me choose the away team. If I want to get something done, I'm going to have to include one or more of my main characters who will have a larger aray of skills and tallents along with the red shirts. Make death permanent for these characters. The game isn't over, I've just lost a character I really cared about. This creates suspense for every mission. I'll have to hire/promote someone new into his place. I should have been more careful when selecting missions/teams.

All of that seems to strip the "MMO" out of "MMOG." But, notice that doing all this allows for some epic battles. Instead of needing 10-40 people to pilot one galaxy class starship into a battle with a Borg ship, I can use those 10-40 people to pilot 10-40 SHIPS into an epic battle with the Borg fleet.

Sounds a lot more fun to me. I'd buy that.

  14. Re:HD-DVD on Next-Gen Consoles -The Strategy Thus Far · · Score: 3, Informative

Microsoft has already said that even if an HD-DVD upgrade comes for the XBOX 360, game's will not be shipped using the format. This would alienate all the players who didn't shell out for one of the upgrades. The HD-DVD drive would be used as an option to watch HD-DVD movies only.

The author should have done a little research.

In fact, in my simple Google search for "Microsoft XBOX 360 HD-DVD Support" the front page came up with an article confirming this.

Seriously, "journalists"... research is not that hard. I'll give you a hint: you can't spell 'research' without 'search'.

Google's stock offering has been very carefully structured to give Larry and Sergei a lot more control[1] than the ordinary shareholding public (and besides, Google is still relatively closely held - the main shareholders of Google are its investors and they trust the founders+Eric Schmidt implicitly). In fact, the non-founding shareholders (mostly Kleiner Perkins and Sequoia) likely know that Google's 'goofiness' makes for good press and share price, and as long as the party continues they're unlikely to rock the boat.
