Neverwinter nights, Star wars: knights of the old republic, World of warcraft, call of duty 2, day of defeat: source, Dystopia, grand theft auto: san andreas, grand theft auto: vice city, grand theft auto 3, pretty much any playstation 2, nintendo 64, or ps1 emulator.
ever played any of those? my ATI 9800 had massive problems with all of those. bad fps, artifacts, and, in the case of kotor, the game locks up if you look at any of the trees on dantooine (what the hell was up with that?. )
Paying 100 quid for a graphics card that used for 3 days pissed me off big time. it was the final straw. ever since purchasing my geforce 6600GT, i have never, ever looked back. i used ATI graphics cards for 3 years, and i will never go back. Im a gamer, and Nvidia is my choice.
In every windows/linux/mac thread, I see the same tired arguments and flamebait. What purpose does it serve? The same people come to slashdot and argue the same, inane points over and over again. For what purpose? Stating "omf wtg linxy/wind0z/bigmac is bettur thaen your shitty os lollercaeks" over and over again in different words, pointing out flaws in "other" operating systems, any and all points you could ever make in an argument on operating systems are moot because of one simple fact.
Everyone use's the best tool for their job. They will use the tool that they are most familar with and feel most comfortable with. They will continue to do so until circumstances dictate otherwise. Attempting to "convert" or "make others see the light" never works.
I read all threads and discussions on slashdot at -1 uncut and raw. I believe everyone, even anon's and racist idiots are entitled to their say, and their own opinion. That does not mean that i particularly like reading it. Please heed my words and save me the trouble of writing up long winded post's like this in the future.
And before you say it, yes, i know probably no one will pay this any attention. But at least I can say I tried.
As for my 2 cents on the subject matter, I think if vista offer's reliability and performance, most will make the switch sooner than they think. World's changed since the 2000-XP move. People are more at ease with their computers, and more people are computer literate. This'll help grease the cogs of the changeover, so to speak.
You aint played the game, yet you seem to have already judged it. You cant judge a game you have not even seen. at least wait till you see, play and experience the new game before decrying it.
As for myself, the memory of final fantasy 7 and 8 (i liked those the most(no, this is not an invitation to berate me for my choice. i have my reasons. no. i dont want to know what yours is. everyones already read the "which ff is your favourite" reply's on slashdot) still resonates in my mind, and i believe that this new flow of gameplay may indeed serve to catapult the game to new heights. but, like anything, we must all wait and see.
Wrong. OEM copys of XP work perfectly in other systems. its the key that wont work, to activate, you need to phone microsoft themselves. My friend (....) has used the same windows XP disk in at least 8 different machines, all with the same code, for perfectly valid windows installations. when you telephone up microsoft to activate your windows, you simply give a bullshit excuse and tell them you have formatted or your system broke down, and that you only have it installed on one machine.
Only a matter of time till someone takes this and runs with it. I mean, christ, think how amazing it would be to play online against 5000+ other people trying to steal your car. Driving along, heading to do a mission, and BAM, your radio, pants, wristwatch, and anal virginity get stolen.
Blizzard made me change my name too. It was spreadbeaver. why the fuck dont i get the ability to whine on the front page of slashdot to 2 million people who dont care, eh?
There is a reason - Microsoft has a tendency to treat every user as novice to the world of computers
Seriously, listen to what your saying. Most people are novice user's. They do not know how to untar a file, they do not know what a binary is, or how to compile. they need to learn these things. not everyone has the luxury of being born back in the 70's and growing up while computers evolved beside them.
I dont mean to be rude, but expecting everyone to be of the same skill in operating a computer is moronic. Also, treating everyone the same is best for microsoft. they have to assume the worst about a user when they give them an operating system: that they barely know how to type, just bought it from dell, and have an AOL connection. if you have a high level of skill with a computer, then you should have the competancy to customise your copy of windows as you see fit.
But this is your fallacy. the age of information? how do you expect people to be informed in a warzone? how do you expect them to keep tabs on the world around them? do not assume just because you have hot piping water, a soft bed, and a high speed internet connection that those poor bastards getting bombed to all fuck in iraq, chechnya (spelling....) sierra leone, niger (the list goes on) have. I never said things change, but it will certainly not happen in our lifetime. people still hate the jews for nailing jesus to a cross for heavens sake. that was only...what? 2000 years ago? give or take a decade.
As for kids throwing stones, what you "expect" has little to do with it and quite frankly is naive. if one child gets a stone thrown at him by a protestant, then he will naturally assume that all protestants like to throw stones (not that they do, just an example). this leads to him fearing protestants. fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads nowhere, because i refuse to rape another star wars quote for my own selfish purposes. HA. *cough* i digress. anyways, this is base psychology. if you stick your finger in a fire, it burns. if someone throws a stone, you assume all people in that group throw stones. sure, it would be nice to think that most people can tell the difference and not fall into the vicious cycle of hate that pretty much anyone since the beginning of time who's been wronged by another falls into, but im afraid the world just does not work that way.
Also, your examples are flawed. you used entire countries and political bodies to show how individual people can act? those countries made peace and alliances for the greater good of their people. what greater good is being served by attempting to convince a 12 year old girl who's just had her home destroyedand her family killed by a cruise missile, that only the ones who fired the missile are bad?
Christ. do you have any idea how wrong you are? England and northern ireland are well on their way to peace? Tell that to the rioters there last weekend. Tell that to a de-volved northern assembly. Tell that to the orangemen marching their parades. Tell that to catholic kids who get stones thrown at them when they pass through a protestant area on their way to learn fucking lessons in school. Give it a couple generations? So you just expect the indians and pakistani's to stop fighting, wait two or three generations then start again? What about all those children that are brought up in that warzone? Will hate be silent in their hearts when a mortar lands in their living room?
Christ. Get a god damn clue.
Its nice to think that if you give something 50 years, it go's away. i used to think that racism in america was confined to the the KKK and a select few bigots. but, of course, then i read slashdot.
apollo was tracked by telescopes on it's journey to the moon. there is more than just some guy going "one small step for man..."
*begins fashioning a tinfoil hat for zero*
Like it or not, this game is going to play vastly different to original goldeneye on the n64. our analog sticks and our c buttons lost to the sands of time, now replaced with a mouse and a keyboard. like it or not, this game is going to play differently to the original.
i hope they dont go overboard, but some change to the game is key to making sure it dosnt turn out exactly like the original. besides, artist's get some leeway when recreating a masterpiece. i mean, look at war of the worlds. that didnt turn out like a bunch of drivel intersparsed with a burning train.
err....
What scares me most about vista is DRM. it scares me that they finally have their claws into me and that if i buy vista for my PC, ill be forced to upgrade my monitor, amoungst other things. while im not going to actually get a gun put to my head and be told "buy", it's a chilling thing when a company can make a person feel like that. im a windows user. always have been.
if linux had better driver support, didnt ask me to go through such a rigorous process when installing, and didnt give me such hassle for something as small as getting on the internet, id make the move. Im a gamer at heart, i know it is indeed possible to play games on linux, but even then, the only linux distro i like is knoppix. pop the cd in, and it just works. no installation, no screwing around with partitions, no pissing about with compiling. all's i gotta do is set the IP numbers for my NIC and im on the internet. if vista turns out to be the DRM infested hellhole i envision it to be, then my next OS after XP will be knoppix. i kid you not.
if the core of the earth is solid, and encased in a liquid medium that is less solid then could'nt it be possible that both the force of gravity from the sun/moon and the force of the crust and the surrounding magma be making the core spin just that little bit faster?
nintendo does not lose any cash on a gamecube. it is infact the only console out there which does not cost its parent company anything to make.
nintendo, at the moment, is the only console developer making a decent profit off their creation.
only difference between ninty, sony, and microsoft is, ninty dosnt have 100's of billions to throw at the "problem" of keeping their console below the 400 dollar mark.
Also, i whole heartedly disagree with the perception that the market for more mature and darker games on the GC just isnt there. everyone and their dog had a super nintendo when they were young. games like mariokart, link to the past, killer instinct, these are games people remember. If nintendo capitalised on the aged market that grew on these games, they could easily make more profits. i guarantee you, if nintendo actually signed some good developers for their games, they would easily be able to pull back the gamers.
But i honestly wasnt bothered reading the rest of the comments. I lost interest somewhere around "You cant crash into computer generated lines".
Anyways, for those in the know, there is a nice Lightcycle game on sourceforge. Its free, runs on all OS's and is quite fast paced and exhilerating. it also looks pretty damn nice.

I believe this man made a very valid point, and you all waltzed convienently over it.

40+ posts and i still aint got a clue what this discussion is about. i honestly cant see what all the hububb is about.
