  1. Host VPS on Ask Slashdot: Self-Hosted Gmail Alternatives? · · Score: 1

As others have mentioned managing your own mail server on a private connection would be a nightmare.

I'd recommend you look into a fully managed VPS solution so you still have full control over everything if you want but your provider can still fix things for you when they break etc. I'd also look into a host that provides the @mail webmail interface which is similar to gmail (possibly better). This shouldn't set you back too much per month and should give you everything you need without all the headaches.

Online backup is definitely worth a look. I use Mozy (http://mozy.com), it costs $4.95 per month and includes unlimited storage and a handy little app which handles all your backups for you. I have ~120gb of photos and important docs backed up online. Sure the initial backup takes a while but after that it only uploads new/changed files. Oh and it's all encrypted and you can use your own key. Also, if the thought of downloading all your data if you lose it scares you then they'll send it to you on DVDs.

That implies they care about universal enforcement of the law. They don't really care if someone whines about a traffic fine anonymously on the blog. No, they'll go after "particular" offenders, or they'll use it to punish dissidents they particularly dislike after already having them so they have something that can stick. That's how modern democracy works, after all--enough laws and you'll be able to nail someone on something eventually.

You are correct, it seems Atkinson had a particular bee in his bonnet about a 'fictitious' Liberal Party mouthpiece. Turns out the guy exists...

Yesterday, on radio station FIVEaa, defending his internet censorship laws, Mr Atkinson said the new legislation was necessary because people such as Mr Fornarino were plants for the Liberal Party. "I'll give you an example; repeatedly in the AdelaideNow website one will see commentary from Aaron Fornarino of West Croydon. That person doesn't exist," he said. "That name has been created by the Liberal Party in order to run Liberal Party commentary." When asked how he knew Mr Fornarino did not exist, Mr Atkinson said: "Because I've been the member for the area for 20 years, I've lived here for longer. "I have the up-to-date electoral roll and I just know West Croydon people very well." But Mr Fornarino does exist. He lives in a flat on Port Rd, about 500m from Mr Atkinson's electorate office.

  14. Scooters are part of the answer.. on Fuel Efficiency and Slow Driving? · · Score: 2, Informative

The biggest problem I see on the roads are large cars being driven around with only 1 person in them! How "fuel efficient" is that?

About 9 months ago I got sick of paying high prices for petrol and wanted to do my bit for the environment, so I got my motorbike license and purchased a 125cc scooter. I haven't looked back. Now my wife and I only have two vehicles, a small 2.0 litre car and a 125cc scooter. These two vehicles are fine for everything we need them for.

While I admit scooters aren't right for everybody, they are definitely a possibility for the majority of people. When I try and encourage other people to do their bit and buy a scooter they often come back with the following responses...

"They don't work out that much cheaper once you buy everything." - Complete BS, sure there's a little bit involved in the outlay (Scooter AUD$3000, license/training AUD$500, gear AUD$500, rego AUD$350, comp. insurance AUD$200) but once you're up and running these things run on the whiff of an oily rag. Consider it an investment. Right now I'm doing about 150km per week to and from work (and a little bit of running around on the weekends), I'm averaging about 30km per litre! It costs me around AUD$9 per week to fill up, that's with 98RON premium mind you! So you do the sums and see how much it will save you.

"Scooters are dangerous, you could get killed." - Again, complete BS. I was sceptical about how everyone kept saying how dangerous riding a scooter would be. So I did my research and contacted my state's Transport Authority. The stats were even surprising to a sceptic. In the past four years in my state there's been one fatality on a scooter and only three other fatalities on motorcycles less than 250cc. Once you go over 250cc, people seem to become retards and there are a lot more deaths. Mind you, 2/3 of those were with stationary objects i.e. poles, parked cars etc. People forget too that on a scooter you're a much smaller target and much more agile. The main risk I've faced seems to be people coming into my lane without checking blind spots. In all cases I've been able to successfully swerve/break/accelerate out of the way.

"What about riding in the rain, you'll get wet." - No, you don't if you have the right gear. I bought a weatherproof clothing straight up. I wear this gear over my normal business attire with leather shoes and I'm yet to get wet. I've even ridden in hail and I didn't feel a thing!

"You can't carry much stuff on them." - This is the only place where scooters fall down slightly. But still, scooters offer a few storage options. Most come with storage under the seats - big enough for a bag or your helmet. There's usually a bag hook to hang some shopping bags, you can get a top box put on the back for more storage and I also wear a back pack.

"They're too slow and therefore dangerous." - This is true for the 50cc scooters, which I believe are only suitable for inner city riding. But my 125cc will top out at about 100km/h and will happily cruise at about 90km/h. They are also *very* quick off the line.

Did I also mention they're very FUN to ride?

    So what's your excuse?

Trying to argue that EA should release mainstream games on Linux will get you absolutely nowhere.

How about if they just helped the WINE community to get their games running decently on WINE. Surely that's just a win win situation with minimal effort.

A lot of their games are probably most of the way there. I recently installed FIFA 08 under WINE on Ubuntu and it almost worked perfectly. Two problems: gamepads wouldn't work correctly and the ball was grey. If they could help the WINE developers solve those problems, you'd have a fully functional "port" with minimal effort.

If EA put a little logo on their boxes i.e. "Works on WINE" I'd buy more games for sure.
