    - This seems like either a misplaced apostrophe or a math fail. US GDP is something like 4 times their combined market caps.

  8. I remember when my company got a big SAP system sold to us (An SAP salesman infiltrated our leadership) and we were told, "well, it's not supposed to meet your business needs, you are supposed to change your business practices to conform to SAP". And the executives like this, because it meant our system would be just like everyone else's at the cocktail party -- no more questions or embarrassment.

Self-driving cars could easily go the same way, with politicians forcing us to conform to the limited capabilities of the "AI", mainly so they can all feel like part of the in-crowd and enjoy a good cigar smoking.

Most people have something that they just want to believe in, and for practical purposes in their particular lives it just makes things better. Big things like God/No God, yes, but also small things like "my wife did not eat the last cookie", which is easily proven, but it's just easier and better for them to stay on the couch and not eat the cookie, even if it's true.

My $50 Lumia 640 with WP8.1 could do all of that beautifully, and works with band 12 on Tmobile...except the web browser was falling too far behind for my needs. So I updated to WP10. It has more features and the browser works much better, though the UI was a bit of step backwards in usability, mostly around things getting smaller and more complicated. I have no issue with missing apps. I may pick up a used Idol4s when they get under $100.

  17. Basic security steps like you mention are totally analogous to locking your door and not driving through bad neighborhoods. That's the easy stuff. Extra locks, alarms systems, reading every day to keep up on criminal techniques and following police blotters is stuff that goes beyond and most people won't do it. But strangely enough we have to hear about every worm, bug, bot, and breach in the news headlines. And every one of those stories has some "security expert" telling us what new thing we need to do today or we'll be PwNed!! They need to dial back the hype before nobody listens to them any more than they listen to the guy selling alarm systems. It's already too late. Security fatigue has set in, in earnest.
