For those reasons, I kinda hope they do coast on their reputation for a while longer and not keep messing with the winning formula (think Coke Classic if anyone reading this is old enough to remember that fiasco).

The difference is that Coke is used for one very specific purpose (OK, maybe two). People want and expect consistency in an ingestible product. For something as complex and multipurpose as an OS, constant development and improvement should be the goal.

I am a private IT consultant and I was recently contracted by a Fortune 500 insurance company subsidiary on a very minor issue (2 days). I was hired through an ad on an online bulletin board. The president of the company hired me over the telephone without requesting any references or inquiring about background, education, or even aptitude with the systems they had in place.

Upon arriving for the appointment, I was led into the server room and immediately left alone, laptop in hand. I left the first day with a company laptop in hand unchallenged. The reason I was taking it was because it was being used as a spam zombie and needed to be reformatted. This laptop had been syncing with the company's entire ACT database and contained other sensitive information as well.

When I informed the president that this data had very likely been compromised and that he should take some action to mitigate the repercussions of this, he just shrugged and informed me that the employee responsible for that laptop no longer worked for the company. He obviously had no intention of following through on any of my recommendations.

Needless to say, I will never be one of their clients.

Create a new profile and browse to your old profile folder (usually in the %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ folder). This should restore all of your settings.
Of course, all of your extensions might not work. If you use the MRTech Local Install extension, you can force compatibility but try this at your own risk.

I have done a little benchmarking and Norton Internet Security alone caused an overall performance hit of 18% on the test machine. McAffee was almost as bad with an overall performance hit of 11%. These numbers are worse than most of the malware that they are supposed to protect you from. Also, these applications will break many older programs.

Previous acts of fraud tended to be minor and localised, mainly due to an overzaealous member of one or the other parties. The irregularities referrenced in the 200 and 2004 elections, however, appear to be a well planned and concerted effort by the extreme right wing to ensure thier agenda is enacted at all costs.
