Supercomputing '06 was awesome. They threw this foam party... and well, 12 people died of electrocution, but it was still a great time. At one point, IBM's Deep Blue took off its chassis... you should've been there.
I used to work at Walmart back in college, and we were told to make that announcement if we thought someone was acting suspiciously in our section. I diligently did this up until a couple of days before I left, when I found out that these announcements are just to spook people and that no recording is going on. We were also told to request security to come to our department, when we did not, in fact, employ a security guard, uniformed or otherwise.
Granted, I could go outside and eat some dirt for free. But if I want the good stuff, I gotta pay for it. Same thing. I could go to the mall and let that volunteer group do my taxes, and wait in line for hours for the privilege, or I can go to a company that charges and offers faster service. There is room for both.
Look to the lowly rabbit. It actually eats its own poop because when it ate the food the first time, it didn't quite get all the nutrients out. This system could work in a similar way. We pee out water that we could be drinking. We poop out stuff that could be burned and thus provide some use for us. Kamen is a genius!
Is it just me, or did this article make the Renselaar folks seem like smug jerks? As in, "Yes, not only did we prove that it works, but we proved that we can do it a lot better than those toking, surfing, hippies!"
As someone who has not at all been following the HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray battle, I have a few questions about this. Why does it matter? What are the real differences between the two? Is it like Betamax vs. VHS, where Betamax was technically superior but lost out due to the other side's clever marketing?
You're preaching to the choir. I understand that BT and file sharing in general have many legal uses, a few of which you pointed out. But I think that there is a general "groupthink" among non-techies that file sharing is wrong, whether you are sharing your own files or not. There's also the groupthink among those who want to hate Microsoft but don't quite understand the technical advantages (My cubicle neighbor: "Hey, can you put that thing on my computer so I don't have to use that Microsoft thing for doing internet stuff?") that Firefox is nothing more than a web-browsing iMac.
And really, I was just making a crappy joke.
True that. At the very least, we could have some of the most efficiently running spyware around. It could eventually get so good that it reports on the porn you saw tomorrow.
This can only be for the good. To have two systems, which will eventually work interoperably, will actually strengthen both systems. Not only that - but they are operated by two different authorities, one military and one civil. With the US system starting to fall apart, something like this is a lifesaver. And to think that it will piss off the hawks... well, we'll call it a bonus.
Yeah, but does it run Linux?
Insert this suppository and I'll explain.
Your check is in the mail!

Then it has likely already come loose.
The servers will be down. Yahoo mail is in beta. I'm sorry, what? Gmail?

Very informative, thank you. If I had points I would mod it up.

Now I can get sued by the RIAA AND use Firefox! Take that, Microsoft!
