This is incorrect - the question DOES not disallow the second child being a boy and born on Tuesday.

Here's a reply to the article: (I haven't verified for mathematical correctness)

"The "(and only one)" qualification suggested by Ralph Dratman is _not_ required. Indeed, in the first case of the analysis, "older child is a boy born on Tuesday", the possibility that the younger child is also a boy born on Tuesday is explicitly included and counted. The hypothesis for the second case does exclude the possibility of both being boys born on Tuesdays. The two cases are mutually exclusive and exhaustive.

Note that if the puzzle had included the "(and only one)" qualification, then the possibility count would have been 13 (6 for boy and 7 for girl) in both cases, and the probability drops to 12/26."

You may be able to implement a system where every function knows what "version" it is and also keeps the old functional code so that if a patched function ends up being called by an old version then it can just execute the old code.

You still have to make sure that execution of an old version thread, and a new version thread at the same time doesn't break anything though.

Of course coldpatching doesn't have to worry about any of this, so the whole "version" functionality and keeping old code only need apply to the hotpatching, not the coldpatching

    From the microsoft patent:

"Not all code changes can be installed via a hotpatch, at least not safely or easily. For example fixes that affect multiple functions and cannot be broken up into independent changes, and fixes that cannot be run while unpatched version of the code are running, cannot be applied with hotpatching"

"In other words, a particularly fix needs to be able to be broken into independent changes, each affecting a single routing, and the system has to function correctly even if some threads execute an unpatched routine after another thread executes the patched version"

They sum it up saying that hotpatching is basically limited to "relatively small, single function fixes, like adding a parameter check or fixing a leak, etc."

Here's the transcript for those who don't like to click links: My 360 Story My Xbox 360 is only 6 months old and last week it crapped out. I assume it is an overheating problem because it would persistently froze up after being idle for a few minutes. The culprit is probably a fan failure or a shoddy job at applying thermal compound that gels the processor to the heat sink. I found plenty of other folks on various forums that have had the same trouble. "They'll be issuing a full refund for the repair cost ($140)"They don't make em like they used to. My Atari 2600 still worked when I fired it up this past summer - though it didn't cooperate when I decided to have my Atari party/BBQ. Even though the 2600 let me down you gotta give it props for giving me a few minutes of "Pitfall" action after having been unused and stored for approximately 20 years. I also have PC components that have been running almost 10 years with no failures. I assumed that my 360 had a 1 year warranty. That's a standard deal for consumer electronics. My old Nintendo Gamecube had a 1 year warranty, and I had to take advantage of that warranty (BTW: that was my best customer service experience ever). Microsoft must not have had much faith in their product because they only provided a 90 day warranty. Rubbish. I hesitantly chose to pay $140 to get it repaired and then I'll choose to pay $50 for a 2 year warranty. Though I am pleased with my choices I feel that I have been dry-run-up-in. Microsoft's Redemption This morning I read an article that was posted on digg citing a rumor that the 360 warranty would be extended to 1 year AND out-of-warranty repair costs would be refunded. I promptly called customer service (1-1800-4MYXBOX) and they confirmed the good news. They'll be issuing me a full refund for the repair cost ($140). The only bad news is that they said a check would have to be mailed instead of an instant credit card refund. Overall my customer service experience has been excellent. My console arrived at their facility on Tuesday and according to tracking info it will arrive back home today (Friday). Less than a week is a helluva turnaround.

The continuous downscaling in microfabrication technology has enabled the creation of magnetic microstructures and nanostructures with defined sizes and shapes. These structures are currently not only implemented in applications such as data storage and non-volatile magnetic random access memory (MRAM), but also form an interesting playground for the fundamental studies of magnetism on a microscopic level.

In thin film structures, in which the magnetostatic interactions usually force the magnetization to lie parallel to the film plane, typical magnetic configurations occur with domain structures that close the magnetic flux. Square patterns have in this case a typical Landau structure with four triangular domains separated by 90 domain walls. The magnetic vortex is located at the centre of this domain structure, where the four domains meet one another. The curling magnetization cannot stay in the plane at the very centre of the vortex structure because the short-range exchange interaction favours a parallel alignment of neighbouring magnetic moments. The magnetization turns perpendicular to the plane in an area with a radius of about 10 nm, in this way forming the vortex core7. The direction of the out-of-plane component of the magnetization is defined as the polarization of the vortex core (up or down) and gives, together with the sense of the in-plane flux closure (clockwise or anticlockwise), the ground-state configuration as illustrated in Fig. 1a-c. A magnetic vortex can store two bits of information13: the sense of the in-plane flux closure can be used as an information carrier (Fig. 1a, b)14, 15, and the out-of-plane polarization of the magnetic vortex core can also be regarded as '0' or '1' of a bit element (Fig. 1a, c). However, to switch the vortex core polarization, magnetic fields of the order of 0.5 T (refs 16, 17) are needed.

Vortex (a, b and c) and antivortex (d) structures are illustrated. In both cases the magnetization turns out of the plane at the centre of the structure--either up (a, b, d) or down (c)--corresponding to the vortex core polarization p. In addition, vortex structures are characterized by an in-plane flux closure, which can be clockwise (b) or anticlockwise (a, c). A three-dimensional representation is on the left of each panel; a two-dimensional scheme is on the right. The arrows in the two-dimensional schemes represent the in-plane magnetization components; while the coloured dots represent the out-of-plane component (blue, up; red, down).

Here we report on experimental studies towards an easy and reproducible switching of the vortex core polarization by low-field excitations. The dynamics in micrometre-sized and square ferromagnetic Permalloy elements with a Landau magnetic ground state were investigated. The structures were excited with an in-plane sinusoidal magnetic field resulting in a gyrotropic movement of the vortex core around the equilibrium position. As already verified in magneto-optical measurements, this in-plane gyrotropic mode is the lowest excitation mode in elements exhibiting a vortex structure (in the frequency range 100 MHz to 1 GHz (refs 18, 19)). A general theory on the dynamics of magnetic domain structures has been introduced previously8. The sense of gyration of a vortex structure is given by the gyrocoupling vector G = -2piqpUnfortunately we are unable to provide accessible alternative text for this.
