Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own goblet, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I'm not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool; you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me... VIZZINI
(the timescale over which the delicate superposition decoheres into a random probabilistic mixture). I gotta figure out a way to use that phrase in conversation!
Wow, given how fond slashdot folks are of criticizing the government, I'd think they would see this for what it is - a new source of general fund revenue. If this were made law, what would happen is a very small percentage of this tax would be used for it's intended purpose. Most of it would just be spent on the worthless shit the government excels at. We would still need to cough up money to get our electronics recycled. We would just end up paying twice.
Ah, the real agenda emerges! New taxes! I thought I smelled a rat. Real cost my ass! The left has found a convenient and convincing new club to beat us with. The threat of global warming. This is just another excuse to extract my hard earned wages from me. Now I'll have to pay a tax for my "CO2 footprint".
This has been tried before. In the 70's our so-called climate experts were crying doom and gloom over global cooling. They were convinced that we would be in trouble in 10 years. I would laugh my ass off were it not for those who are buying in to this new hysteria.
It's true. Since BC came out, my SO and I haven't been raiding. We haven't done Onyxia since the update. But it's only temporary until we level up to the point where we CAN raid again. And we do the occasional instance together...
I bought a condo in Northern California about 2 1/2 years ago. I am pretty much stuck with a pretty awful commute, but since I bought where I could afford to, and I need and like my current job, I don't see a viable alternative. The industrial complex where I work does have a very nice gym which I make use of everyday. The main drawback is that the complex is very far from anything else, so it's either eat what they have at the cafeteria(yuk) or drive into town and buy groceries periodically(which is what I end up doing) I choose to be healthy and I make choices specifically to further that choice. Where I live has little to do with that choice. I have a little home gym and I have a pass to parks in the local park system. I am active, not as a passive part of my life, but as an active part of my life. I take time to eat right and work out. I can't really rely on my walks to the store to keep me fit(I don't walk I drive). Ironically, the mall IS within walking distance as are a whole bunch of restaurants. I never eat restaurant food, because it is horrible for you. I do occasionally walk to the mall.
Bottom line is health is a choice no matter where you are. I think most people that I observe are just not making it a priority.
Given my suspicious nature and inherent distrust of the gov'ment, I would suggest that if the gov'ment suspects that you have more than 500 readers, they will assume that you are a lobbyist and require you to register. And hit you with the ugly stick if you don't.
There was a time in my life when I was poor. I drove a crappy old car. I had ratty old furniture. I lived in a really bad neighborhood. I saw wealthy people and their life style, yet, instead of envying what they had and trying to steal it, I worked my ass off and made something of my life. I'm not rich, but I'm not poor now.
We are spoiled brats here in the states. We whine and complain about the wealthy and get all worked up, when if we devoted that same energy to achieving something in our own lives, we would be much better off.
If you're writing C code and you're not wrapping your memory allocations/deallocations in a more fortified layer than malloc, you're asking for trouble. It's possible to do much more robust memory management and memory integrity checking if you do this. It's not foolproof, like many suggestions, but it can really help.
If you can leverage the development cost over a couple of "episodes", it can help the bottom line and the game. If you do the engine right, most of the effort for the sequel is done by the content creators - modeling/animation guys, level design guys, music/sound guys, etc. Since you don't need to do as much development/debugging of the code, you can spend more time actually creating the game.
I think of the GTA3 series as episodic. The engine is basically the same, but the story changes. Much remains the same as far as play mechanics go in this case, but there's new stuff too. I like the GTA3 games. I have them all and I've played them all almost completely through. I think this is an excellent example of how to do episodic right.
Who'd a thunk it. Looks like economic forces are the best one's to encourage behaviour change. And fuel efficiency innovation too. This is a non-problem. Taxes? Why? Let's just wait until gas prices get high enough and then alternatives will appear. When market forces make it too painful to drive people will naturally drive less and seek cheaper alternatives.
I have decided how much my services as a software engineer are worth. I always make that clear in the interview. I've never settled for anything less, and I don't plan on ever asking for less than my skills warrant. Being a very senior engineer, I have no need for a prominent project to work on, or high profile company to work for. I enjoy working on interesting projects, but at this point in my career, it's not essential, and besides that, boring = easy, in my experience. Doing harder work for lower pay? Why?
I know... Let's stop funding the federal government with income tax altogether and then I get to keep MY money. There seems to be this weird idea these days, that somehow this is the government's money and that they give US tax cuts. No, it's mine. The government takes it from us, folks, sometimes by force. Voluntary tax system my ass! It really seems crazy to me that the same people who cry about how horrible the government is, are the same ones who insist on encouraging its growth by demanding that we give it more money to waste. If that's not stupidity, then I don't know what is.
No federal income tax.(I'm just slightly less opposed to state income tax, because I at least have a tiny bit more say at the state level and if Im really pissed, I can just move away from that state) That way, if I want to fund private space ventures, then I can voluntarily do so. By the way, I like tax cuts (the Bush tax cuts did benefit me) and I'm not rich.
</rant>
The truth about this law is that it is very un-progressive. The ones most harmed by this tax will be those californians who can't afford to buy a more modern, fuel efficient car and can't for one reason or another use the greener alternatives. Those who can buy a hybrid, obviously are buying it for green reasons, not economic, since such cars are NOT more economical.
Probably the little gotcha requirement would be left out by Mr. middle manager in this dicussion. Then, months later, when the project was nearing completion he would suddenly explode.
"Why doesn't this system track the inventory by supplier's parent company and supplier's parent company's SKU!!!??!!??"
"Uh... But the requirements never said-"
"I don't want excuses, I want results!!! For God's sake, you had a fully functional inventory module handed to you!!!!"
First, while I don't have kids, I do live next door to a family with 4 boys. It's a condo and the boys hang out right in a common entry area between my unit and thiers. I noticed that they would be playing games constantly on mac laptops that were provided by the school. My personal take on this is its less a problem with the schools, than it is with parents who are looking for something to keep their kids occupied. These kids had little or no supervision. I didn't personally have any problems with the kids, but I can't say the laptops were, in my opinion, helping the kids educationally.
I will eat the rat and hope that if there's one rat, perhaps there's more. If I can live 3 more days on the nourishment that the rat can give me, perhaps I can survive until the next one blunders by.
It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity or remorse or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you mop the floor.

Looks like it could be pronounced 'hurt u biz'
Criminals are just bad people with no morals?

This scares me!

Did anyone else read that as "adult brains grown by specialists". I got this image of brains in vats - evil science experiment - for a second there.

I see the problem. You have assumed that IT meant Information Technology. The reality is he's the Iced Tea minister.
