  1. Re:Apple Specific Drivers on Apple Fails To Deliver On Windows 7 Boot Camp Promise · · Score: 1

From what I heard, OS X uses certain low level functions that control processor speed/voltage within the OS itself versus what conventionally would be done through a BIOS on a normal PC. Apple uses EFI... I know that. Just reading about some of the "dangers" if using a Mac to run Linux... main reason being, you have a likeliness of damaging the CPU if all you run are intensive tasks under Linux. Apple wrote drivers that deal with this stuff under Windows.

Is this true? If so, can anyone provide some references (as my googling was fruitless)? I'm currently doing exactly that after installing rEFIt on a Macbook Pro 5,3...

Last time I checked, Turnbull's popularity was at record low: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/07/28/2638114.htm. It's going to take more that just not uttering "Work Choices"...

  7. Wikipedia + rpg-esque level system = wicked on Does Wikipedia Suck on Science Stories? · · Score: 1

Most academic disciplines have a set of jargon and a language register that takes a while to learn and understand. I reckon there needs to be some sort of scale so everyone can get what they want out of the page. Maybe multiple copies written for different targets? After all, I understand German better than I do my 3M1 lecturer (the point being there's a 'German' wikipedia, but no 'maths' wikipedia).

Perhaps a 'wikipedia for kids', 'wikipedia for adults' and a 'collection of dense, unreadable wikipedia articles for the discerning scientist' could be justified? Even a "zoom-in" button (like that on google maps), so you can set your desired level?

I also think that physicists should be forced to write two copies of their journal articles - a layman's and a physicist's copy. Reading some journal articles really makes it seem like they're putting up 'smoke and mirrors' so only people already in the club can read it. Science and effective communication shouldn't be mutually exclusive.

Keeping the vacuum running would be much more expensive. You'd need a lot of pumps constantly running to remove any air that comes in. And that's probably gonna be a larger volume of air than that in front of the train.

Then there's the issue of people exploding and not being able to breathe.

Even if you got rid of 'Microsoft', 'Mozilla' and 'Apple', you'd still have 'i-nternet explorer' before 'f-irefox', unless you dropped 'internet' as well, and changed 'safari' to 'Konqueror'. You could then change 'Firefox' with ' bat', 'explorer' with 'ant', 'safari' with 'cat', 'netscape' with 'dog' and 'opera' with 'egg'.
