Big, bloated CMS systems like Vignette Story Server need that kind of Power. Yes, there are better, more efficient choices for CMS software, but when you have trained a dozen developers in your I.T. Dept in Story Server development, bought license worth more than a house and management has you locked in, your choices are limited.
Therefore, you need this kind of power. Sun servers have, so far, provided us with that power. That and heavy use of technologies like Akamai Edgesuite have allowed to handle some very large web sites.
I don't see the need for this in household applicances but something like this could be VERY usefull in medical equipment. I'm thinking about IV drips that communicate with pharmacies to let them know how much supply is left all over the hospital and heart and brain monitors that communicate with breathing apparatus and the like.
I think the possibilities are endless for the medical application of this as long as you keep in mind that it should never replace or override a doctor's judgement. With nursing shortages and overworked doctor's in hospitals, medical machines talking to one another and downloading treatment plans might help out quite a bit in maintaining a certain level of care.
For the sake of space exploration budgets everywhere, I certainly hope we hear the equivalent of "tranquility base, the Beagle has landed" very soon. A lot of peripheral good science comes out of these space programs (medical advances, improved energy effeciencies, etc).
I really looked forward to going to hte mall and picking up Rainbow magazine each month. I remember spending four hours typing in the Basic code for a game called Pango which featured a little pengion character and ice cubes. I remember trying to save it to cassette and the tape freezing on me and then the whole machine locking up and loosing everything. I still think about the COCO II whenever I get a BSOD at work, and I think in many ways, I was still better off back then.
Later on, I purchased the side expansion bay (4 slot) with dual floppy drives, 300 baud modem and OS 9. Man I was the BMOC when it came to cruising the BBSes with that box. The LOGO interpreter for the COCO was pretty cool too.

Plain text passwords in web.xml

The number of J2EE applications that are out there with plain text passwords (database, application and otherwise) in their web.xml is just staggering. I think that's the first place many J2EE developers need to start looking when thinking about shoring up their security holes.
If I see one more book on server side Java that has example web.xml web app configuration files with plain text passwords, I'm going to go postal.
Well, seeing how this "worthless toy" is responsible for storing your message and millions others like it here on/. I'd say it was more than a mere toy. For some applications (forums, web logs, archives, etc), MySql is more than enough to handle the load if the application is designed correctly and it sure beats paying for an Oracle license where one is not needed.
Agreed, however, some of the open source and "developer source" software that I think might be useful to us in the future in our workplace only works with MySql, out of the box. That and the fact that up until recently, PG was not available on Windows which, unfortunately, is one of our production platforms.
WooHoo !!! Java Stored Procedures, just like in Oracle. One more bullet in my chamber for replacing Oracle with MySql here at work. This isn't everything we need yet, but it's a big step forward and will help address some of the Oracle DBA's concerns with MySql.
Now, if I could only get them over the whining about having to learn another DBMS in order to support it....
It's interesting that the guy from Nikon thought Ansel Adams would have picked up the D100 of all cameras since it does not have a black and white color mode.
I have a D100 and have been shooing with it for a year now and love it.

Anyone who thinks design patterns are only applicable to OOP should really read the book "A pattern language - Towns, Buildings, Construction" by Alexander, Ishikawa, Silverstein, Jacobson, King and Angel (c) 1977 (ISBN 0-19-501919-9). It is the second in a trilogy of books on Patterns, what they are, how to recognize them and how they are applicable to municipal planning and building systems.
It's pretty interesting to see where some of these modern day architects got their ideas and that patterns occur in things all around us in our everyday lives.
It's also required reading for anyone REALLY serious about playing Sim City.
I was at a Microsoft dog and pony show at Philly's Franklin Institute when Object Linking and Embedding first was introduced and when their demo of cross app automation with word and excel crashed and then the Windows 95 box BSODed, someone in the top row shouted out (in a Mexican accent), 'OLE !!!
I still meet people who were at that demo and we share a hearty laugh.

Just tell Father O'malley to keep his presents to himself during future holidays, thank you very much.

How long before we see another one of these landers for sale , dirt cheap, on eBay (Buyer must arrange their own shipping) ?

I keep clicking "windows update" and my penis has not gotten any larger as a result. Maybe I have to wait for a full service pack.

I would have thought that "Microsoft O/S Security Assurance Specialist" would have made the list. No ?
Since it would be the "evil" version of something on Star Trek, would it also have a little goatee beard ?
