Getting sloshed "every day" is definitely an issue and most of the 12 steppers you'll find in an AA meeting used to live that life. Good for them trying to get away from their weakness.
If I have a few too many on my birthday, New Year's Eve or just on holiday, then end up crosseyed (& painless) and pass out at 8pm - I am not a drunk. I've simply had too much to drink on that particular occasion.
Now, if I do that every night in my own home for no other reason than "I'm old enough and can drink whatever I want" then we can talk about me having a problem. Suggesting I've got an alcohol problem from one night of overindulging is ridiculous.
"Only drunks with a real problem get sloshed" - that's a pretty broad stroke of the brush. Couldn't disagree more.
Nope. Not a land owner, not interested in owning land either. How bout you?
Amoral hypocrite? Wow. And here I thought were were talking about whether downloading something that ought to be bought off a shelf is or is not "stealing". I say yes, and I freely admit that I participate in said stealing practises. I fail to see how that makes me either amoral or a hypocrite.
If you want to talk about reading all of something and not looking like an idiot, please note that I did not once directly mention you. I happened to reply to your post since you were yet another lover-of-semantics trying to profess that downloading copywritten material is not stealing, when in fact we all know that it is. Whether or not you participate in this pastime isn't any of my concern.
thanks for your glowing insight into my personality, I'm sorry to see that you took my message personally when it was not aimed specifically at you.
I call Bullshit. Bullshit to everyone saying it's not stealing. These are products available for purchase. If you acquire them without purchasing them, you are "stealing" them.
I've been watching this bullshit argument fly around/. for a long time now and every time I read it, I wonder what other nitpicky bullshit arguments are cooked up by these people to absolve themselves from any wrongdoings? You folks must be a treat to live with/hang out with/be near - nothing is EVER your fault, right? That must be on account of your clearly superior intellect.
Here's a radical idea: take responsibility for your actions!
My name is The Yuckinator and I have been stealing software since 1985 when I got my Commodore 64. I download movies and songs/albums often - even ones I don't own and wouldn't ever have purchased otherwise. I have been downloading games for years. Feel free to get all uppity and say that if you're not actually "taking something away from someone else or depriving them of something" it's not stealing! That's just crap, and you know it.
That may be acceptable in a linguistics class and perhaps if you want to go with strict legal definitions, but in the real world you're not fooling anyone with your bullshit fluffy argument. We all know that we're acquiring something that ought to be paid for without paying for it. However you care to justify it to yourself so that you feel better about it is fine by me, just realize that whether or not you like the word, you're stealing that game/song/album.
Oh yes, yes you are. Quit the nitpicking bullshit. I know it, you know it and everyone else knows it. Your arguments hold no water with those of us who understand "reality".
Note that I am not condemning your actions. I'll bleed usenet dry until the day my ISP blocks it, and then I'll find another ISP and start again.
But please, don't pretend that your gains aren't ill-gotten. You and I both don't deserve to acquire these products of someone's imagination without compensating said person. That's not going to stop us, but at least I don't have any misconceptions of what's actually taking place when I download a new torrent.
NAFTA clearly isn't worth the paper it's written on.
See: Softwood Lumber
the US doesn't get to play Nafta victim when they've been screwing us and fighting it for years now. Either it applies to all of us or to none of us. You're not supposed to pick and choose what parts you like in a treaty and ignore the rest.
There's a great interview with Mark Steyn from TV Ontario's "The Agenda". The second part of the show has the three Osgoode Hall law students who made the initial complaint to Maclean's Magazine, and I was happy to see that they all consented to discuss the issue together in the third segment of the show.
I found it extremely interesting and I recommend it as a must-watch for Canadians everywhere.
I think it's important to point out that while this is absolutely an important free speech issue, Mr. Steyn isn't actually the one who is being charged in the Human Rights complaint. The complaint is being directed at Maclean's magazine. What I found most interesting is that it's the Canadian Islamic Congress who is bringing the charges, and not the three law students who initially complained.
I've read your rant, and your subsequent bitching and whining for far too long. You claimed to be "knowledgeable" about what you were doing and certainly gave the impression that you weren't just an average user.
Nobody to blame but yourself if you don't take the proper precautions when installing a 2nd operating system.
I've hosed MBR's with RedHat, Debian, FreeBSD, Ubuntu AND Windows. But I knew what I was getting into and I knew how to recover if (when) disaster struck.
Once again - nobody to blame but yourself if you installed GRUB and didn't know how to configure it. There is an option for "no do not install grub", you know. -and if you don't know how to deal with boot.ini then I submit that you didn't have any business installing a 2nd OS in the first place.
Looks to me like these guys either stripped their website down to the barest of bare bones to survive what must be DDoS-level traffic, or they have a really crappy website.
I'm thinking that those graphics look like they probably fit into a more image-rich site. They've even done away with their style sheet.
If my guess is right, it shows that these guys are definitely on the ball. Well done!
(if not, they really need to do something about that site!)
Perhaps you've never had a 2nd, unwanted DHCP server on your network before?
Try it sometime - it's loads of fun. Better yet, try it when someone sets it up w/o telling you where it is or what it's doing.
Step one: Determine that your network problems stem from the fact that there is another DHCP server handing out addresses on your network.
Remember the Monarch Butterflies? This company pursued research out in the open, without any environmental safeguards, and killed a large portion of the Monarch Butterfly population in recent years. Uhh I'm going to have to call bullshit on this one. There were indeed one or two summers with a low turnout of Monarchs in my neighbourhood (Toronto, if spelling neighbourhood that way didn't tell you already) but last summer and well, pretty much every summer since 2000 (this scare was pretty big in 1999) I've not seen any more or less than usual.
And so I'm not just providing an anecdotal comment, I'll continue by saying that I would love to see you produce any credible reference for that statement, because my credible reference talks about a series of annual EPA studies, a USDA and many other studies saying that no serious harm has come to the Monarchs as a result of BT Corn Pollen.
I hate to ruin your FUD but "agriculture" has been messing around with the very code of life itself for thousands of years. When's the last time you saw wild Corn growing anywhere? We select for genetics with every crop we plant, and ALL of the "familiar" fruits and vegetables that you see at your local market are GENETICALLY MODIFIED in one way or another - yes even the "organic" ones. (biggest bullshit word ever - you show me a cauliflower that's not "organic" and I'll show you someone with a wax vegetable in their hands)
Maybe read up on Punnett Squares and see why I'm not wrong. What most people seem to be scared of is the fact that Monstanto does it so much faster, instead of waiting for generations of plants to grow and selecting for the desirable traits.
I've never been this offtopic before - but the Monarch argument is getting tired and old. It's pure FUD and should be treated as such. On another tangent - how does a post that invokes Godwin get +5 anything?
But if you're a good Slashdotter and just read the completely inaccurate headline, you can work up a righteous froth and get a nice +5 Inciteful. Fixed that for ya;)
In my last neighbourhood, we had 2 ATM's that regularly crashed. You can imagine my surprise when one day I walked up to see a Windows NT login screen! Unfortunately I couldn't find CTRL, ALT or DEL.:(
Am I the only one who thinks this guy looks a bit like Dalton McGuinty? Given that we heard about his other habits right before the last Ontario election.....

What? Oh sorry, wrong Del Toro I guess...

Sorry, but artists just like NICKLEBACK are part of the problem, not part of the solution.
.. or a black hole?
Am I the only one who thinks this guy looks a bit like Dalton McGuinty? Given that we heard about his other habits right before the last Ontario election.....
