Like every product, there are levels of quality and levels of effectiveness. There are some great generators out there for bicycles. Rim drive generators for intermittent use are not quite as efficient as a hub based generator, but are completely defeatable when not used. The hub based units are really fantastic with very little additional drag. Don't judge all generators by some cheap POS that never worked well. However there is a nugget of truth in the Simpsons clip...

I use the word "additional" drag because the drag of any generator is a function of the load on it. That energy to light the bulbs, charge your iPod etc has to come from somewhere, and in the case of a bicycle headlight generator, the more you load it, the more drag you'll be fighting. Sadly that's a fact of life.

I could be logged in as root on a linux box and set my wife down and ask her to do some damage; she is harmless because she is lost. On her native computer she can do some damage though.

I'd think ATMs would use some sort of high availability real-time OS like QNX or VXWorks. This is a perfect application for a high-availability OS.

When laying on the couch, the screen navigation features are good enough that if I have a quick surfing need, I'll just pull out the phone rather than walk to my computer.

It's not a complete replacement, but it's way more of a replacement than I imagined it would be with such a tiny screen and no keyboard.

You can write your own app and install it on your own phone (that includes compiling somebodies app that you download from the net), but you have to be a developer to get the appropriate keys to push it to your phone. You can't get an executable from the net and download it to your phone either.

There's also an ad-hoc distribution method where you can share 5 copies of your app with others, but they too have to be registered and there's a key exchange process. so you can't just hand out the app or install just any app.

Neither method is particularly easy, both methods require that you have an intel based mac.

The obvious solution if you don't like Apple's walled garden method is:

    1) don't buy one - but you lose out on what is really a very nice phone and internet gadget

    2) jailbreak - then you truly own it, but things can and do break and generally don't work as well as with an non-jailbroken phone (in my experience, your mileage may vary).

I suspect that he has to say those things, and deep down is actually pretty scared about the iPhone etc. But he can't come out and say, "damn, they really target their niche really well", because that's not his style. Microsoft targets it's niche equally well, business is a sea of Dells running MS OS's, so it's not like he doesn't know about marketing to your core.

Once again he has missed the point, apple machines do cost more, but you get a unique product. There are precious few PC's out there that are concerned with how the back of the unit looks or cable management, etc. Apple is selling a higher caliber piece of gear than the generic best-buy special. Take a look at the apple keyboard vs. any other PC keyboard. You may or may not like the design, but the differences are clear.

With a mac product, you can run ALL software, the converse is not true. That's worth some money to lots of people.

Like any unique product, you will pay for it. but for a lot f people it is worth it.

Ballmer has to say those things regardless of what he believes inside, he's the voice of Microsoft.

Not really trolling, the problem (unless I'm less informed than I think I am) is that iTunes plus content is still a subset of the total content. So depending on what you want to buy, you may or may not have the option for the high bitrate version. Also the iTunes plus content was an upcharge until recently.

Due to the DRM, I have only been purchasing from Amazon, but now that is changing I may try iTunes. I used to browse for new music on iTunes (because it kicks amazon's butt for browsing for new music) and then if I found something I liked I'd go over to amazon to buy it. Sleazy but it works well.

The larger point in my post is that doing what the GP and I do with iTunes is not the "apple way" and thus we have earned some pain and suffering.
