You're missing a category: running Windows apps on a different version of Windows. I develop on XP, but I want to see if my code will still work on 98. This is not emulation, but I can open a 98 virtual machine and test it out. The same with trying the latest beta of visual studio, I'm not going to install that on my main machine, I'll install it on a virtual machine and test it out.
Oregon Trail was one of my first exposures to a computer. It was back in elementary school, probably 2nd grade. We were using the good old Apple IIe's. We had to carefully insert the big 5 1/4 floppy, close the door, and turn on the computer. It was sooo powerful.
I loved that game. The best part was when you went hunting, you would spin around and shoot pellets at bears and rabbits. The 2nd best part was when you crossed a stream. 80% of the time when crossing a stream some member of your group would come down with malaria or some weird disease and die. And you had to be careful of crossing some streams, they might be too deep and your wagon could float away.
That was the best game ever. They should bring it back in 3D form... maybe as a MMORPG
You're exactly right. If all you look at are Word documents (which are easy to pick out), then a document produced in LaTeX with the standard margins will look a bit odd. However, to me, the standard LaTeX document is far more beautiful and easy on the eyes.
Thank you for bringing up LaTeX. As a grad student in CS, the benefits of LaTeX are obvious. But it's surprising how many educated people still do not understand what LaTeX is or how beneficial it is. Example, last semester I turned in a project proposal (written with LaTeX) to a professor. His response: "Aren't your margins a bit too big?" I was speechless.
They limited the particular program stored to only 7 days?!?! That's ridiculous. So much for saving your favorite concerts, as I have done. (I just hope my ReplayTV doesn't head toward this...)
At anandtech's website, to test the ability of their google search server, I searched for the title of that article. You would think it would point me to the article; it did not.
"MS will eventually have to accept Linux as customer demand increases."
Yes, `eventually' they will... if/when customer demand ever does warrant MS Office on Linux. I personally don't see this happening in the foreseeable future.
For those diehard Office-loving-Linux-using people, wine has come to the rescue already. A native version of Office is not what's holding people back from adopting Linux.
is gmail still by invitation only?
if so, that's a big plus for yahoo.
(yes, i know, there's a website that sends invitations, but still, why is that necessary?)

"Reiser4 ... representing a 10 year effort"
obligatory comment:
by the time longhorn (vista?) is released, it too will be a 10+ year effort.
"I live in BFE (read 'remote') Pennsylvania..."
You pronounce BFE as 'remote'?
I would pronounce it as 'buffy'.
I'm Ready!!!!
in Windows XP I trust!!!!
(with router, firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware...)

scientists still know very very little about the brain.
and yet still, it is obvious you cannot see my sense of humor.

science is great, but it won't help bring back 100+ y/o landmarks that have been washed away.

it did not.
(I left this comment at anandtech yesterday)
Ok, so I tested it with this query:
google mini search server
- it came back with 18700 useless results.
I also tried the title of the article:
anandtech search goes google
- 712 useless results
how long does it take to crawl?
1. Laz-erss (and sharks?)
2. Fusion
3. Profit!!!
I can only speak for myself,
Yes, I am lazy.
"Sony will have to pay more than $100 per drive which will dramatically increase the unit cost of the PS3."
The new blu-ray will cost > $100.
A new dvdrw from newegg can be had for about $40.
(that's retail though)
So, 'dramatically increase' is roughly $60 to $80?
That's a pretty big gamble for what benefit?
and they're changing the name of OpenOffice to:
OOMLA!!!!!
Yes, it is sarcastic.
"Do you see a reason to install Windows/WMP just to be able to view a webcast?"
Well sure!!!
But I've already installed Windows for its lovely properties of stability, speed, and beauty.

"cause trouble for examiners."
Exactly!!!
People have more trouble figuring out what I've been up to!!!
Can Zonk patent the act of duping?
/.
Does it so well.
But I'm sure there's plenty of prior art here on
