But you forgot to say if you are getting paid $$$ for using the graphic/word processing apps. If you are only using a graphic/word app for FUN? would that make it an addiction? Maybe one argues that graphics is an art. Ok well coding could be seen as an art, depending on who you ask. But if you aren't getting paid it's deemed an addition? What do we suggest about gamers that get paid for it? I am not arguing one bit that it depends on how you use it, but the entire idea is subjective based on one personal mindset to another.
"Then, of course, the anti-spyware consortium will have to address these new vectors and issue an updated set of anti-spyware methods. Which will, of course, spur the spyware authors to come up with new, undetectable methods. And so on..."
I concur, spyware/malware and viruses even are similar to an arms race. Bigger and better for both sides will continue to be the on going process to which the endless and vicious cycle will endure. Who usually wins this race? In most cases it's all about the more people and more $$$$ a side has, now to say which side will have more and if that will matter for this scenario, remains to be seen.
None the less it could be very good for those whom haven't acquired it yet. Let's be honest, even if you get cured for one disease, odds are you are going to get another to which a cure has not yet been discovered. So let's face it, there are more preventative medicines that there are cures. Preventative medicine is sometimes just as good as a cure.
I agree with you 100% gallwapa, in fact I recommend removing Internet Explorer completely. Now you can't get around them using Explorer to surf (unless you invoke the peguin like in the parent thread), but what you can do is my trick I use. Don't make the blue E evil, make it safer. Change the "E" shortcut to use Firefox instead. Most likely, they will barely notice the difference other than not being 0wn3d by some crap ass spyware. But you are right, people can be socially engineered easily especially novice web users.
Languages are arbitrary, one can create compilers for any language to run on any platform(s), its a matter of taking the symantics of the language, and using a lexer and parser to generate intermediate code, which then can be translated to assembly code for the target platform (of course there is more to an actual compiler). So just saying that a language is not PRO because of limitations to the OS, which actually is not true for C#, is ignorant. Maybe you are just knocking M$ and trying to troll, but take a look at the Mono Platforms if you want to know more.
I believe that most hosting companies don't support PostgreSQL, but rather support MySQL on average (unless you have your own server). So as it would not be that hard, which they could most certainly add, they probably have just not got around to it. Just my opinion.
I run XP with Linux on VMware, and from within the VMware I have another XP install. Does that make me twice as safe? If not I can run a few more instances... as many as I need to be safe. It's like life, usually you double or triple up on the dirty girls, so why not on the PC?
Sounds more like they want their 15 minutes of lame! I am standing behind Google.
Over 700 patents and you don't make anything? The best thing I can relate that to are the domain snatching companies that sit on domains and wait for people to want them. Only this company just sits and waits for others to come close to it's technology and prey on them. Since Google is a large company of course they saw $$$$
Ask your average person what browser they use, and most likely your response will be "I don't know" or "I don't care" and I would be willing to bet it would be more than half of internet users. But you are right that they will be acheiving subliminal mindshare to the non-savvy users, but it will definately go un-noticed by them.
Here's an example. The last 4 computers I have fixed, I completely wiped IE out and installed Firefox for them. Saving me headaches in the long run. When a month or two down the line I ask them how their system is running and how they like the new browser I get, "Everything is running good, new what?" Completely clueless Because I made the Firefox icon set to be the IE "e" icon for familiarity. And it was 4 out of 4, so my percentage above could be off by alot, given into account for the icon change.
Maybe the will strike back, maybe they won't, point is that it's still obvious they are still shipping with XP, so since Microsoft gives IE away w/ XP, are they really losing anything other than browser share market?

How about a Firefox extension that teaches about Firefox?
Or better yet how about the default URL to be
about:firefox
And be a full tutorial w/ all the demo bells and whistles?
I agree 100% about the lawsuit, pretty cheese ball, but didn't they have a similar problem with the power cords on the regular Xbox's earlier this year. AFAIK for 360 now it's the actual power supply, but you would think there would be more vigorous testing considering the recall earlier this year?

That is a good idea, but in seriousness maybe this is the cache setting to at least disable this gobbler???
about:config
browser.cache.memory.enable
Maybe $0.05 per line of code (est. 1 million lines ???) $50,000 ...???
Hopefully they shorthand statements when available!
Sorry, that one is played out!
Well that will solve your internet/phone wires, but unfortunately electricity for your AC power, will not run through fiber.

Possibly triple-dog by those words!

Just a side note, MySQL 5 is definately a RBDM
What! No Demo? I am not sold on screenshots!

Good thought but...check out #5 of the Firefox EULA

Well that makes more sense, but it was not clear the way you originally described it.
Ahhhh. C++ is a high level language last time I checked!
Wait let me guess .... it will be called Google Mining!
Saying "Serious" and "Basic" in the same sentence is almost an oxymoron.

Firewall Firewall Firewall!!!
Firewall your system, and/or deny her IP in the hosts.deny file or the Windows equivalent if there is.
Pretty sure there are some good firewalls that are alot less than, $500, no hardware needed.
A couple off the top of my head
ZoneAlarm
BlackIce
Throw in some Jpeg's of some real naked ladies and I sold.
