Correct me if I am wrong but didn't Microsoft pull this off years ago (and still pulls it off today)? Didn't Apple act this way back in the 80's (and once again today)?

Nintendo did it with the SNES (going into the N64 they were acting like everyone would buy it simply because it was Nintendo), Sega did it going from the Genesis to the Saturn, Sony is doing it going from the PS2 to the PS3.

Give it a few more years and be amazed when we see "editorials" like this poping up again Complaining about Microsoft's price hiking on their latest system going from a previous one, simply because it sold better then any other system that generation.

I don't get why everyone is so suprised about this, Sony is riding high just as Sega was when they charged $400 for the Saturn, Just like when Nintendo charged $300 for the N64 (I couldn't find them anywheres around here for less) even though both their previous systems sold for $200, Sony released the PS1 for either $400 or $300 (depending where you looked, Toys 'R us charged $400 for it but everywheres else I looked it was only $300) then the PS2 was $300 because they were still trying to break into the gaming market, with the PS2 they got alittle more cocky because they had more third party's on their side then Sega or Nintendo.

Come 2000, Sega is gone, Sony is riding high and Nintendo is trying to reclaim it's crown, Microsoft comes out of nowheres with a system (just like Sony did 5 years prior) and it suprised people, They didn't really have the same support as Sony did 5 years prior but they had enough.

where did the change happen and when did I miss it? Microsoft announced $400 for a 20gb hdd version and everyone is all excited about it and doesn't think it's strange and they justify it instantly. Sony announces a $600 60gb hdd version and suddenly everyone shits their pants and can't understand why they are charging so much for it...what? A new processor is being used, a true next gen drive is in it, it can read just about every kind of card you can think of, yet no one can justify it, Yet when it comes to the 360 "oh yeah it's got that HDD that's why it's more" and that's it, that justifys the $100 higher over last generation?

What's going to be interesting is to see what Nintendo unltimatly sells the Wii at, everyone is automatically assuming it will be no more then $200, But what happens if they charge $250 or even $300 for it? will people act like they are over the PS3 or will they justify it quite nicely and act like it was to be expected?

I honestly still don't get what the huge deal is over high definition either, I've seen HDTV running at the cable company when I pay the bill and it looks just like my TV at home, aside from the TV having the boxes on the left and right instead of at the top. I've seen the PLasma & LCD TV's displaying things at Walmart and Best buy, sure they aren't hooked up properly (only done through the RGB instead of actual digital signal) it makes me go Wow when I see how crisp the picture is but then I start thinking about what the TV would be used for, Video games (which is slowing down for me on a console) and general TV. I hardly watch any movies that would require me to have an HDTV and since they still cost way to much for a decent size, so you look at it and to get a "proper" TV for the PS3 you are looking at a minimum of $400 so a whole PS3 package is going to cost $1000 to get the "full true experiance".

as you said, that's just way to much for something so little. That's the reason I hope nintendo just dominates next gen, I plan on picking up a Wii before anything else simply because it looks really interesting and something my family can all play without problems (my mom and nephues play games but my mom hasn't played many cause you have to react way to fast and there's to many buttons, but the Wii solves that) and if it's true that it will launch for $200 then I will be picking it up around launch.

I've been a huge fan of Nintendo since the NES days, I've bought every system (except for a Vitrual Boy) they have released played every game made by nintendo that was released in the USA but I realize they are in for the long haul, they have a better chance at second place then they did with the Gamecube but there isn't any way they could finish first. Everything is about graphics now, not innovation. Blood and gore is what mainstream want's not fun and quirky games of the past. Interesting story's take a back seat to bump mapping, anti-aliasing and all that other crap, the higher you can get that stuff to be the better your game is according to the mainstream gamer.

I really do wish Nintendo would just dominate next gen, just obliterate Microsoft & Sony when it comes to sales but it just won't happen because their controller is to different for third party's to get. so it will get about as much support as the gamecube did, that is untill that one special game comes out just like with the DS that shows off what you really can do with your games, then there will be a string of copy cat games before they just go back tot he way they were while nintendo continues to release the kickass games.

I do agree with the first comment though, Thank god Nintendo realizes that Episodic content is doomed to failure ($20 per instalation, you get a LONG game that has 9 installments you are paying $180 for a full game, only have to wait 18 months for), In game advertising can work depending on the game and the ad though (I just can't picture Mario collecting Nike shoes to "enhance his jumping ability", just like getting some adidas clothes in Final fantasy but it CAN work in FPS' and games like GTA & any sports game).

Not once have I seen a window pop up saying I can't install them/I shouldn't install them because I already have a program on My PC that takes care of that.

Why don't they go after the 360 while they are at it? it's the only system to offer a wireless controller , Hard drive Headset and a couple other things out of the box (Remember this is right now) the PS2 & Gamecube don't offer this it's a monopoly cause they are including things that their competetors don't for free! they aren't FORCING anyone to use the stuff, they aren't FORCING anyone to buy it but when they do they get alittle something extra for free.

As much as I hate microsoft what they went after them for was pointless, They were trying to make it easier for the end user to just turn on the computer and have it work. If they didn't include Media player your average computer user wouldn't know how to play a video cause there is no player (as it is with the different codecs it makes it hard enough), so they want to go look for a player but suprise! they had to take IE out of the OS so you don't even have the web anymore, it was considered anti-competative and they were forced to take it out, so now what are you to do?

Just like when they first got taken to court and had to take Office out of Windows, who did this hurt more? Microsoft or the end user?

When I went from Windows 95 to windows ME (I know, one shitty OS to another shitty OS) I wondered what had happened to all the stuff that was in 95, Word was gone (which my mother used on a daily basis) yet I had no clue what to tell her, I went searching and found out they were forced to take it out cause it was anti-competative. I just couldn't (and still can't) wrap my mind around this, Were there really that many word proccesing programs out there that microsoft including one in their OS hurt buisness?

I didn't learn about OpenOffice till like 2003 and when I tried to use it it kept crashing and was way to bloated (it's better now though), I did find one program called ABIWord (I think that was it, their mascot was an Ant) but it crashed CONSTANTLY, my mother couldn't open a document for more then 5 minutes before it errored.

so in the end, the government forcing microsoft to split Office from Windows did basically nothing except cause my mom problems with the documents she had from windows 95, since she could no longer open them without Office.

Like a few people said above, they are only going after Microsoft because they are the most widely used OS. If it was Apple they would be going after them, if it was Linux they would be going after them.

Now what they should go after microsoft for is their tactic of signing a contract to publish a program, take the source code, finish it up, cancel the contract, claim ownership the program and either sue the crap out of the company they were going to help or just let them rot away.
