  1. Out of the box on Building Websites with Joomla! 1.5 · · Score: 1

Out of the box for PHP-powered "CMS", I think:
    - Joomla = Great for vertical solutions
    - Drupal = Great for custom solutions and content
    - Wordpress = Great for blogs, portfolio sites and galleries

Albeit, I think none of them are good for e-commerce.

There are literally thousands of Chinese ghost movies some with and without some form of flying through air shit. They're not considered horror though, as they just mask their intention with Chinese art cinema (don't laugh, I know). But if you show them to some kids in the west they'd be a scared. As Marty from Back from the Future said 'I guess you folks aren't ready for that yet, but your kids are gonna love it' pretty much fits.

Before big visits it always rains for a couple of days before because they're doing this sort of thing. Then when the visitors arrive it's blue skies all round ;) Except for that time they forgot...

I know a lot of people might disagree that this is good, but I believe Bill Gates is doing great, charitable things.

He has access to make this happen and he believes in Windows OS; So good on him! Not everything has to come from marketing executives. He doesn't live by those rules any more and his wife who also deserves a mention believes in this as much as he does. He just happens to have a lot of money and influence to carry it out. I don't use it or like it, but I doubt very much my nerd ego matters if it offers a better OS (despite negative advertising as some would see it).

I just hope some other companies provide alternatives to buyers :) Roll on global economy.

I would just like to point out that the Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang do not support the Taliban, and they do not look favorably at Americans or the Han either. They dislike the Han "generally" for mostly political reasons more than religious, but you can safely say they dislike the US less than the Han Government. The (Han) Government is a direct threat that his historically been trying to equalise the region just like they are in Tibet by pumping in Han Chinese businesses and workers.

Despite all this, it is mostly Sunni muslims (small percentage) who are fanatic enough within Xinjiang to perhaps open up these resistance pockets (I don't know what percentage of these resistance pockets are actually real or not because the government can just point and shoot and call it a camp). I had the pleasure of eating with one in 2005. It's interesting to note he was generally talking about his dislike, then spiked up saying that if they invaded Iran the Muslim rebellion would kill them (then he bought me some tea).

The 11/11 attack did nothing for them, they had no beef with America to support the attacks. If anything they would/should have beef with the Chinese. It just so happens the Chinese used the Americans as an excuse to crackdown on them so perhaps the hatred is misguided. Sorry for all the grammar/spelling fuckups, I had a really bad headache at the moment.

I live there/here/Beijing. No one gives a crap about anything you do if you are a foreigner. You can drive a car without a license and walk the streets drunk and pass out in a bus lane and they still won't do anything. It's like this unreal freedom. I can smoke some weed, but they won't know what it is. I can import prescription drugs in the mail and they don't give a rats arse. I can browse the internet looking at anything I want and I can write emails about my opinions about anything I want. They can't do crap. Unless I'm committing a real crime, like working without a visa, or smuggling drugs, you can do what you want. The same goes for the youth today. They do what they want. There are gay bars and rock chicks with tattoos. There are ferraris and porches around some times and yuppies in suits. It's such an illusion what the media paints of China and it's really pathetic. It reminds me of that Italian prime minister or something that wont let up about chinese eating babies and communism. People should get their own education and guts and shrug off the racial tendencies and visit the place.

  17. Chinese reporters on Letter Casts Doubt On Yahoo China Testimony · · Score: 1

Everyone assumes the reporters are angelical. Ninety percent of Chinese reporters are dirty, low down scum who will say anything to get their name on the papers or on TV. This includes breaking the law to achieve it. I mean even recently with the cardboard dumplings - that's tame to what they concoct.

Unfortunatly, most of it is in Chinese on BBS forums to spike a story which they can then later follow.

Dunno about this chap though ;-) Who knows, perhaps he had a history we are not hearing about.

  18. It's true on How Microsoft Beat Linux In China · · Score: 2, Insightful

Read the article, it's true - no point in arguing. Ninety-percent I'd say run IE etc, so much so that hardly any webbies check on other browsers. Probably about the same percentage. They teach .net and java in schools. So OS on server shizzle is still there. Server wise, yeah hosting companies run 2003, but always offer a linux alternative through a CPanel/plesk interface.

Chinese language and translation tools run on windows and IE better than they do on the mac and linux, so they use it for study along side their normal courses.

My office is all mac with the exception of ubuntu server. The reaction is sometimes negative. Popular IM clients like QQ only run on PC's, unless you get the port (not as accessible). Then you get other IM's like off taobao (big online sales), thats windows only.

Users don't know what Ubuntu is unless they're in their 30's and have worked in a senior role or admin role in languages outside of ASP. Oddly enough, the north is predominantly more windows-esque than the south. Perhaps the influence of the tech savvy of Hong Kong pushing north.

Anyway as much as I hate it, having the edge or difference knowing all about OS-OS and carrying a Macbook Pro makes you unique :)
