  1. Atheism ! = Religion

Agreed. Atheism is not a religion. But some atheists proselytize their lack of religious beliefs with a fervor that can equal that of the most outspoken evangelicals.

  2. Religion is fine if kept polite

But Christianity in the US and Europe is not "polite": its adherents and officials constantly insult non-members, and, worse, churches misuse taxes paid by non-members to finance their operations and recruit.

No, the vocal minority does this including subscribers to particular faiths whose beliefs require them to do this.

The silent majority is silent - they keep their beliefs to themselves. You don't hear about it, so you make the mistake of believing that they don't exist or that they believe (or don't) as you do.

  3. But your contrived example goes directly against the actual example that GP provided. Every indication is that his boss is not the type of person to support Prop 8, because he understands his personal beliefs are not suitable for everyone.

Would you still be as favorably disposed toward his "free" exercise of religion, given his demonstration that he couldn't keep his delusions out of the voting booth?

Straw man. That's not what happened, it's a completely made-up example. Obviously someone who is forcing his religious views into law is a twat. This does not negate GP's point or experience.

The only valid point that can be inferred from your statement is that yes - militant atheists are marginally more tolerable in that they are annoying and try to force their beliefs on others, but do *not* try to codify their beliefs as law.

Given the rest of your troll, i think I'm giving you too much credit ;)

Actually, come to think of it, try out this perspective: you fervently believe in the Christian mythos. You *know* that it's your duty to save the soul of everyone who can be saved. But some people are trying with equal fervor to keep your perspective out of schools. Looked at that way, atheists too are trying to use legislation to enforce their beliefs -- at least from the perspective of a subset of people.

  5. Re:Death with Dignity. on Massachusetts May Soon Change How the Nation Dies · · Score: 4, Insightful

The reason why the elderly who are in medical care don't have dignity is because we as a civilization have setup a structure where such people are considered a drain on society.

Ever watched someone die of cancer? No matter how well cared-for they are, there is absolutely nothing dignified about it.

The "drain on society" has nothing to do with people dying a slow, painful and drawn-out death that can't be averted with modern medicine. Nice attempt to confuse the issue though.

Possible, but hardly "with dignity". You could still be found and rushed to a hospital, stomach pumped and kept alive. Plus quite likely getting forced into some kind of psychological treatment.

Even if not, there are other nasty side effects associated with any of the easily available methods.

So while it's possible to suicide on your own, it's difficult to manage with a minimum of discomfort.

You realize that the article you linked to agrees with the general story if not the specifics around stenographers:

To solve the jamming problem, Sholes and company, who had originally arranged their keyboard in alphabetical order, decided to put the most commonly used letters (or what they thought were the most commonly used letters) as far apart as possible in the machine's innards.

The design was then never changed, even though subsequent typewriter designs made it unnecessary.

The most annoying thing about Cardholder Services is that I know the bank I used to work for actually branded themselves as "Cardmember Services" for customer service, because they had so many cobrands and partners (airlines, hotels, etc - each with their own card branding). Which means that the legitimate bank using that name lent credence to the frauds who followed after.

I raised a concern about it back when they first started doing it (years ago), but was just a lowly programmer who clearly couldn't understand the intricacies and nuances of branding.

As an added incentive, for the next 8 days individual developers can register for a Dev Center account for just $8 (a 92 percent savings). Please note because this is a very limited time offer. You’ll be charged $99 USD or equivalent in your local currency, and we’ll refund the difference in the next 30 to 45 days. Watch for more details on Dev Center soon.
