The reason that a lower number of iPods are being sold this year in comparison to last year is that more people who want an mp3 player have bought one, lowering the number of sales.
The game now is shifting a bit more towards the upgrade cycle and maintaining customer loyalty. For example, I've got a 20gb Zen Touch that I bought 2 years ago; it's a great player with excellent battery life and decent sound, but looking around, I think I'm getting towards the last quarter of it's life cycle- in about 6 months I plan to give it as a present to one of my sisters who doesn't yet have a player.
I might get myself an iPod if I evaluate that they're worth crossing over, but more likely I think I'll get myself a small, light Zen of some description. I might even go for a video/music player if it's worth the size etc.
The point is this; people still listen to music. People still use those iPods that they bought last year, 2 years ago, 3 years ago, and when something significantly better comes along or they tire of or break their current player, they'll upgrade.
Oh I get the value from the games as well; Loco Roco, Lumines, Burnout and Worms (plus a few others) have all given me their fair share of fun ^^. I was really just addressing the movie bit of the equation.
They'll never have a lineup like Nintendo's though; there have been a lot of dumb games for the PSP.
Well the real world usability of the 1gb stick *is* that you can put a movie or two on it, and very handy it is, too. I generally get two medium sized movies worth on my 1gb, as it's MPEG-4 and is pretty efficient etc; when I go home for the weekend (usually about once every 4-5 weeks). It's a 6 hour bus journey each way, so two hours of something good n' distracting in the middle makes my PSP worth every cent. The best things to put on there are documentaries (especially Michael Palin's travel stuff). If I set up my current machine as a mythTV box when I get a new machine, I'll be able to drop reencode stuff straight onto the stick.
The point I fail to see is why anyone would want to watch the movies released with this pack in the first place. I'd be put off thinking I was paying for the shit they release 'for free'. Utter fucking drivel. Release something decent, you pricks.
The funny thing about it is that you can be fined a (manageable enough) couple of hundred bucks for endangering ( or at least increasing the risk to ) lives by driving too fast, but endanger a massive corporation's profit margins, and you get fined tens of thousands of dollars- it just doesn't make any sense..... but then I'm preaching to the converted here.
Calling to a mobile phone can be up to 20 cent or more,
You lucky bastard, whereever you are; In Ireland, ringing a Vofdafone customer from an O2 mobile during the day is 70cents (euro) a minute (that's about $1), and things don't get much cheaper during the evening, either. It's a fucking disgrace, but no-one seems to ever do anything about it.
I think the way that the news is presented does make a difference, however; if it's a proper bug/defect/vulnerability report submitted to them and talked about on the 'net, then well that's great; but if it's the kind of thing that just gets sent straight to reuters with no context 'ZOMG 61 security holes in teh Fox!' then then it's bad press for the browser. From the article it seems this research/testing has been the former, so it's a good thing.
I for one, welcome our spamfighting overlords, and think that we should see more of this kind of thing on the front page of./
Although we've got our share of trolls and fanboys ruining it for the rest of us, I daresay that there are at least a few slashdotters out there who could write guides at least as good as this on a number of geeky and related subjects and present them on the front page, in much the same vein as the original content presented in book reviews etc. It might even be worth paying the author a few bucks for the privelige.
I know that the news presented here is usually linked-to content, but I think some original guides with relevant links would be content at least as worthy as the 'Nanocosmetics used since Aincent Egypt' article posted by that little troll Roland last night.
Because if you'd ever used Flash, you'd know that there is no way of getting data from the user's microphone or webcam without their explicit say-so, and every Flash movie has to have that permission granted every time it's used.
Meh, I forgot to mention that you could also just attempt to return the phone to the person yourself. You might even get a few bucks in return for the courtesy, which would be an added bonus.
I managed to return IR£100 (about $150) to someone a few years ago (this was during my first month in Uni) when I found a wad of money outside a parked car and figured the owner had dropped it. I waited about 40 meters away for 10 minutes with a friend, waiting for the person to come back; when it turned out it was a young mum with 3 youg kids, I couldn't have been happier to go over, confirm the cash was hers and to hand it back to a much-relieved parent.
I think the good karma came back to me when I left my Powershot G6 in a cafe in Galway a few months ago, and when I went back the waitress had scooped it up and kept it behind the counter for me ^^
Ok I clicked on the dropdown to mod you troll, but decided that an eduction would be more useful to you than a loss of karma.
First, a quick definition, taken from dictionary.cambridge.org:
theft : (the act of) dishonestly taking something which belongs to someone else and keeping it:
Taking that phone was theft, pure and simple. Anyone who picks up a phone from a public space and fails to hand it to the nearest resonably responsible person is committing an act of theft. They are stealing the phone as surely as if they'd snatched it from the person's hand or broken into their home.
I just got a new 24" HD TFT screen for my computer yesterday, and I was wondering about the difference in quality between my DVD player using S-Video, and my PC via DVI.
and found that the image quality using my computer and DVI is a little higher due to better smoothing of the source; more significant is that the colour rendition is a hundred times better on the computer/DVI connection combination. Chihiro's bow and her arm are almost the same colour (pasty white) in the analogue transmission, but in the 100% digital image the natural skin tone is preserved.
Now excuse me while I go watch the first movie on my new screen ^^
You obviously didn't see my invisible joke, /joke tags, what with gas being a vapour and all.
/condescending tags around this one
See if you can spot the condescending,
Meh, they'll have years to figure out to do that; this thing is vapourware of the highest order.
Expect Duke Nukem Forever to be the first thing I download ^^
Fad? What fad?

Well it dramatically decreases the chances of reproduction, thereby decreasing the population over time and ensuring that the species dies out.
;)
We're doomed
Nope, that was Hitler.....
Seasoned Slashdot readers would call it "a-not-so-hard-to-crack-password".
Personally, I'd call it the computing equivalent of picking up the dropped soap in the prison showers. Without a towel.
Actually I heard that they're starting to accept cash in the post........ please send your donations to.......

Thanks guys!
With a decent connection and a good torrent, you could have Snakes on a Plane on a plane.
Not entirely suitable material, I think you'll all agree.

"Whoever it was, they should be shot."
Shot by someone faking the lawmaker's identity, so that it goes down on record as a suicide.
Poetic or what?

It..... it... it's a start
So if social groups were colour models, men would be from RGB (additive) and women would be from CMYK (subtractive). Perfect!
The ones on your mobile phone and on the radio?

Probably

But... but
This one.
