  1. Re:so... on The Coming Onslaught of iPad Competitors · · Score: 1

I know it's convenient to dismiss Apple's success as due to blind press coverage or blind fans buying anything they sell, but that is a bit of a false argument. Every platform has blind adherents, but Apple seems to have loyal adherents because Apple DOES incorporate the functionality that most average users want. The problem is many Slashdotters think that Apple products are horribly crippled and yet for most people Apple products do all that they need or want.

  2. The iPad is selling well for a good reason on The Coming Onslaught of iPad Competitors · · Score: 1

Much like the iPhone, the iPad is a leader in design, UI, and usability. The iPhone led out of the gate because no one was doing anything remotely liked it and it stood out. Some negative folks said it wouldn't sell, sat on their laurels, and then when it did they COPIED it (Android, BB, etc.). Same thing with iPad. No one had the balls, or innovative DNA to do it themselves, Apple came out, it's a big seller, and now the Android and BB copies are starting to roll out.

Nothing wrong with copying success, but it would be nice if they had an idea on their own lately instead of photocopying Apple.

I guess my first reply is that you are right, nobody has any idea how many people got killed by releasing the information, so let's not assume they did until we have a documented case of it. That assumption of damage is exactly the manipulation the US Gov't is trying to push on people, but right now it's just that, a manipulation technique.

Consumer Reports is hardly trustworthy. They treated this iPhone thing as a hit generating media blitz. First their review crowned it the king of cell phones, then they came out a couple weeks later with the not recommended rating (unless Apple provides cases for free), then Apple provided cases and CR still said they didn't recommend it even though Apple did what they asked. It was a media campaign that week designed to get tons of free advertising off Apple's back. Every day that week CR released some new (conflicting) statement that got them in the news.

Sorry, but if you think CR is the only trustworthy source of reviews then you're living under a rock.

That was exactly my thought when I saw this story. "Cue the Android apologists!" (aka Apple haters). I've seen a bunch of posts justifying this, all using reasons that would also apply to Apple's App Store, but somehow it's okay when Android does it. I can see why both platforms might want some non-intrusive DRM, but it's amusing to watch people give a free pass to Android when they'd be screaming "walled garden!!" if it was Apple.

I guess hypocrisy has been open sourced because hypocrisy wants to be free!!
