    2. Do mice and keyboards really have their place in the living room? You either need to have a special arm chair, balance everything on your lap with maybe a lap table, or be leaning over a coffee table. I just can't see it becoming mainstream enough, but more power to you if you have found a comfortable setup in your own home. I personally have a Linux based media center in my living room that I can control entirely through a remote control, and I love it, but that's kind of off topic.

  4. RTS on Unreal Creator Proclaims PCs are Not For Gaming · · Score: 2, Insightful

I really believe the last bastion of PC gaming lies in real time strategy games, a genre that essentially requires at least a mouse. I guess many die hards would say the same about first person shooters, but I am comfortable playing with either a mouse or controller, and ever since Halo came out back in 2001, the FPS scene has been migrating to the consoles at a pretty quick rate. The PC will always have Counterstrike, but when it gets pretty popular console games such as Gears of War a year after their console release, you can tell that times have changed.

But yeah, real time strategy games, I don't think we'll ever a decent port of say Starcraft 2 to the consoles, but I suppose if anyone can pull it off, Blizzard can.

I'm not really sure if PC games losing to consoles is entirely a bad thing, I think people are just fed up with trying to keep their system up to date with hardware, nasty CD protection schemes that kill their drives, and console ports that can play just as well and in the comfort of their living room.

I hate being linked to Wikipedia by a website and basically get sent to an entirely different page because that article has been poorly merged with another. The information I'm interested is no longer there or so weak that it's completely pointless.

I don't edit any more because of deletionists, my least favorite response of theirs is "it is a waste of server space." Well, four of us just had a 1000Kb internet argument on this article, that seems like a waste of server space.

If you've never listened to the radio show, I would highly recommend it. The cast is truly stellar and does a terrific job reading the phases. The most interesting thing about the radio series is that the first two phases were produced back in the last 70's and then they brought just about the entire cast back together ~25 years later to do the last three phases.

I loved the radio series so much that I was pumped when I got to see Simon Jones (Arthur Dent in both the radio and TV series) perform in Minneapolis in a play last year.

  11. From a non-player on D&D Co-Creator Gary Gygax Has Passed Away · · Score: 1

I had two direct interactions with D&D throughout my life, the first was after freshmen year of college over the summer when my best friend from high school wanted to DM a D&D campaign with me and all of our high school friends, who had never played D&D before. I guess he had played a ton of it at school and wanted to introduce us to it so we tried out some anime game. We had two sessions and it went absolutely horrible. We were back playing Super Smash Bros. Melee the next week.

During college, specifically during my sophomore year, all of my college friends on my dorm floor would play D&D, well, except without me and my other friend. These were guys that we played video games with every night, went to the movies with, went to football games together; but for whatever reason, every Saturday they would lock themselves in a room and play D&D without us. Honestly my friend and I didn't have any experience, but we both wanted to play. It kinda ticked me off so we made a point to be obnoxious outside their door while they played, ah well.

Even though my stories might make me sound angry towards D&D, I have nothing against it and would like to do it someday. Alas, all my friends I'd be interested in playing with from college are spread across the country now.

I became aware of this guy's case only recently from this article which is pretty relevant to me because of my day job.

Anyways, we've had some great discussion on copyright, theft vs. infringement, etc. and since reading his original essay, has forced me to think closely about my personal stand on/against copyright. Yes, the guy may be showing off a bit, but 20,000 dollars for two years of hard work is not really something to brag about. This is more of the case showing that US copyright laws can work in the favor of the "little guy," Slashdot's favorite thing to get behind.

  17. Just Sony? on Sony Paid Warner Bros. $400 Million to Go Blu-Ray? · · Score: 4, Informative

Currently there are 18 board members (top level), 65 contributers, and over 200 members. Sony is the obvious front company for the association because of their reliance on the technology for the PlayStation 3, but there are a lot of groups that have a big stake in the project too.

Maybe Sony did pay Warner the big bucks for the commitment, but I'd be surprised if they're the only ones making deals like this.
