I'm sorry, I was stupid and immature but you don't need to keep ragging me on that. I apologize for any hard feelings, and hopefully we can put this past us. Yeah, too much time on digg is starting to make me see everything in terms of fanboys. I guess the moderation bit was a bunch of crap. I still think that your analogy doesn't completely work, because Microsoft never made any media players before the Zune, I think PFS was just the DRM that their partners used. But yeah, other than that I see your point of view, although I still don't think it's much of a practical negative point against the Zune because I still doubt very many people bought music using it. (disclaimer: I don't listen to music at all, and have no intention of buying a media player of any kind.) Oh, and what makes me sound desperate? I was just trying to apologize and explain my viewpoint...

  3. Re:Buhuhuhu. on ZOMG New Zunes · · Score: 1

Well, while it's funny that MS doesn't support their own DRM, it's not exactly a reason to say the Zune sucks. Sorry, I interpreted your comment a bit differently than what you intended maybe. Perhaps if it had been modded funny instead of insightful...

Ahh, I'm really sorry. I was just guessing, because honestly, I can't imagine anyone buying PlaysForSure music anyway, much less someone on slashdot, so I assumed someone who commented on something like that was simply pulling things out of some sort of fanboy manual.

True, I forgot that notebooks cost around $100-200 more than equivalent desktops. I guess you win on that regard. But I still think that if you search around enough for deals, you can get a pretty cheap laptop with 1GB.

Yes, but I've seen some pretty low end PCs in fliers that had 2GB of RAM. I'd like to point out that if your "computer savvy" parents can't upgrade their own RAM, they probably wouldn't be the type to put Vista on their machine now would they?

  9. Re:Many? on Processor Throttling In Windows XP · · Score: 1

My point was that even low end PCs you find at stores have dual cores and 1+GB of RAM. Partly thanks to Vista's requirements, no doubt, but also the price war between AMD and Intel and dropping tech prices in general.

  10. Re:Many? on Processor Throttling In Windows XP · · Score: 1

Seriously, where have you been the past year? A dual-core CPU can cost $60 or less, and 2GB of ram is around $75, depending on how picky you are. There's no reason not to use that kind of quality now. 512MB PCs have been outdated for ages.

  11. Possible to be used as system RAM? on AMD-ATI Ships Radeon 2900 XT With 1GB Memory · · Score: 2, Insightful

I was just wondering, since before games often used system RAM when the graphics RAM was full, do any of you think it would be possible to go the opposite way, i.e. use gfx ram as system ram? It's a lot faster, and when you're just sitting there outside of a game it's not doing anything. Ultra-fast system cache ftw? Or am I just crazy? Is PCI-e too slow for that kind of stuff? Maybe with Vista's new driver model that allows GPU virtualization something like this could become true, but I really have no idea of the technical details involved in doing something of this nature,

Nope, if anyone has actually used an OQO they would know how incredibly useless and impractical it is. I wrote the software for our high school's entry in the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle competition (http://auvsi.org) and we used an OQO as our onboard computer, and it is a pain to actually use. It didn't help that we wrote the software in Java, but that's what they teach in high schools now so that's what we went with. At least remote desktopping in over ethernet made it useable, but for daily use it's just pointless. That thing gets incredibly hot in an incredibly short amount of time. Not to mention that the batteries are complete crap, and we had three of them die on us right before the competition. (shameless plug: http://avbotz.net/ our site, made by me.)

Holy shit dude, I'm getting goose bumps remembering that game. I'm pretty sure I cried when I finished it too, and so many years later it still brings a tear to my eye. Link's Awakening seriously needs a sequel where we go back to Koholint Island. I miss those guys... That was the first Zelda game I ever played (LA DX in 3rd grade, now I feel really young) and thanks to you, I just remembered how awesome the GBC Zelda games were. Link's Awakening really blew me away back then, I really wish the DS was still compatible with GBC carts because I'm too lazy to go find batteries for my GBC. Here's hoping Phantom Hourglass is a blast.

There's no modding required now, all you have to do is buy a slot-1 device such as the R4DS (the cheapest and most compatible such device, AFAIK) and a microSD card and load files onto it by plugging it into an adapter or a slot on your computer. I just ordered one yesterday, so I'll see how AToW is soon. Seriously though, there's no effort involved in running homebrew on a DS, just parting with a bit of money. (that, and finding a reputable site to buy the device from. RealHotStuff.com has a 9.7 rating on resellerratings.com, and they also have a good price and a 5% discount with the code RHS07. Not much on a $42 item, but hey it's a discount. Not being a shill or anything, I just saw that they had good reviews so I bought it from them yesterday.)
