Oh and also, until this year we were using Linux on some sort of Pentium III stack computer thingy, this year we got the OQO handheld PC thingy since our old sub was totaled and the cost of old parts was too high. It was the easiest way to get USB in our sub and it's self-contained, but expensive. Our code was in Java, but it used to be C++. I think our site got hacked though, and I don't know who runs it and it hasn't been updated in a long time.
We're the only high school to compete in it. Last year we placed 5th but this year we did like no work during the school year and I wasnt here during most of the summer so I have no idea what happened. Our best ranking was 2nd. Apparently this year we're 15th. Look for Amador Valley High School on this page: http://www.auvsi.org/competitions/06standings.cfm
4. X-Windows. What a mess. Why do I have to tell it my x & y refresh rates for my monitor? Windows just 'knows'. Many more things here I feel that X-Windows should just 'know' - the number of buttons on my USB mouse for-instance. If Windows can do it, there's no reason why Linux can't. Also, X-Windows 'feels' slower than Windows. I'm sure there's good reasons for this, but I don't care; Windows is snappier.
Yeah, I really hate having to google my monitor's refresh rates every time I reinstall, but I don't really use linux that much anyway. For me, it's more of an educational experience. And I don't know what's up with GNOME, but KDE feels way snappier than XPSP2.
5. Lack of decent file-browser. The best I've come across is Nautilus in a mode that resembles Windows Explorer. It'll do for now, but as far as I'm aware, offers no context-sensitive menus for applications (like the Winamp "Play in Winamp" right-click menu on folders.
Another GNOME problem I think. For me, I wish I could use Konqueror in Windows because it's so much better than Explorer it's not even funny. The file previews alone are reason enough to ditch Windows, imo. That's why I'm anticipating KDE4, which I believe I read will be cross-platform and thus I'll be able to ditch Explorer at last.
Actually, I was posting my experiences with the leaked version. I did read the summary, but not the article. It's just that that's what I first thought of when I saw it. But who needs an article when you've got first hand experience?
I don't know if this is what was meant, but it seems that WMP11 starts up very fast and at first uses far less RAM than 10, (12MB vs 18MB on mine) but then jumps to around 42MB during playback. But I like the fast startup more than I can actually feel the effects of the RAM usage increasing, so I guess it's a good tradeoff. Of course, I hardly even use media players in the first place, so my POV may be different from someone who has it running all the time.
No, the patch was simply conflicting with a few pieces of software. If you aren't affected, you won't get the patched patch. The original bug was fixed with the original patch. This patch's patch simply whitelists a couple of programs known to cause issues with the patch.
Wow... what a n00b. It would be separate equations for each element comprising the steel, with heat (Joules)=specific heat*mass*change in temp. Not volume. People who are failing my high school chemistry 1 class could tell you that.
In fact, if you go here: http://geddeth.dk/downloads/gaim/ you can get precompiled CVS versions, for windows people like me who can't compile things to save their life. It's pretty interesting.
That would be awesome, although perhaps not copying but streaming would appease the RIAA. Although it can't work how you stated it, because I don't know why anyone would want to automatically get every random person's music onto their player, but perhaps the more popular ones. One easy way I think (although I know nothing about this) is to utilize some sort of short-range radio and a tuner in the MP3 player and then have broadcasting capabilities, not on by default because that would be annoying.
Yes, I learned VB 6 from a book on game design, which absolutely forbade me to drag n drop anything. I admit before that I used a plain VB book which did corrupt my programming skills at first, but now I never even look at the design mode. I really like the code completion and stuff, if eclipse has that I might move to that from JCreator since the only reason I like JCreator at all (besides the fact that we use it in AP Comp Sci) is that the IDE looks pretty similar, and indeed is designed, to mimick VS.
Call me a microsoft sympathizer, but I agree with this guy. VB is way more productive than Java. I have experience in both VB and Java and Java takes far longer to code and is often a little unintuitive where VB does things far simpler and doesn't try to force you to speak in code or think of everything as an object.

Sarcasm, anyone?
DX10 requires the new driver framework, WDDM or w/e. That's why, unlike the previous versions, it's only available on Vista.
Very interesting idea, but the legality is shaky. I imagine that's the only reason no one has done this yet.
Wow, very nice. I must take a moment to congratulate you. There. This has got to be one of the funniest things I have seen on /.

If I had mod points I would mod you up!

Until they run Athlon 64s, they will never be at the top of the PC performance charts.
Or those under 18? I can dream, can't I?

As sibling post said, I'm not a subscriber. I can tag.
Fatal1ty already had a lot of licensed stuff, like motherboards and sound cards. This is just another thing.
ATI Catalyst 5.12 also added support for multiple cores to improve performance as well. I think it's the same thing as the nVidia driver situation.

Nice. I'd mod you up if I had the points.
It's also called the Pentium III. And they aren't really faster than AMD's chips, just faster than the P4M.

base.google.com is 413 forbidden. hmm... maybe they dont want to get /.ed.
I think that is probably very likely, especially with the slick controller/shells that it uses which wipe the floor with PS3's 'boomerang'.
