  1. From Adult PWD Racer and SCCA Solo competitor on Pinewood Derby Tips? · · Score: 1

Ok, so some of us adults got tired of sitting on the sidelines and have had a few of our own "Adult Pinewood Derbies" to battle it out amoung parent couples teams (lots of fun). The following tips are from my experiences as an adult PWD car racer.

Important considerations that I haven't seen mentioned (or were not stressed):

1)Wheelbase - The longer the wheelbase the more stable the car will be and the less likely it is to rattle back and forth against the track guide. Don't use the nail slots that come pre-cut on the car. Cut your own very near the ends of the car to exend wheelbase and reduce "overhang". (for more on wheelbase and overhang issues do a google search for the "physics of racing" documents that are floating around on the net)

    2) Get longer wheel nails. The ones supplied with the kit are short and easily dislodged by bumps and falls.

    3) Polish the wheel nails (axles). Use jewlers rouge impregnated in a strip of cloth. Grip the nail in a vice and polish the running surface by doing the "shoe shine stroke" with the strip of cloth. Keep it up until it shines like a National guitar.

    4) Use graphite only as your lubricant. Any liquid lubricant will increase drag.

    4) de-burr the plastic wheels. Use the drill technique others have mentioned, but do it all carefully. The inside running surface of the wheels may need attention too, but that would be easy to mess up. Spin them on your polished axles to identify any burrs or flashing that needs to be removed. The wheels do not provide traction, so I see no reason to "rough them up". Ever seen train wheels? Smooth as glass = lowest rolling resistance.

    5) Drive shims into the nail grooves to align the wheels so the car sits flat and tracks straight. This is critical. A car that pulls to one side grinds against the track guide and will lose every race. Do this carefully.

    6) Use a weighting method that is adjustable. You want to be able to take your car to exactly 5.0 oz. and that means you are going to need to adjust your weights right to the limit at the weigh-in. Another racer and I tested and found that 0.2oz reduction in weight was all that was needed to change which of our two cars was consistantly faster. Remember, 5.0oz on your scale might be 5.1oz on the scale at the races so make your weighting adjustable and get it spot on 5.0oz on at the races.

Good luck and have fun. Make sure your son has the lead role in construction and racing. You are the consulting engineer there to give him the technology edge. He's the builder/racer. This can be a great father/son experience. My childhood PWD cars did ok (always placed, never won - until I was an adult), but my father and brother went all-out on my younger brothers regata boat. Razor-eged keel, baked/polished/waxed enamel paint, and a sail design that involved research, matterials testing, and calculus. It was so much faster than any of the other boats that 15 years later the two of them still laugh about it together.

    Have fun!

Don't bend over for them just because they ask you to! Your statement is like saying that engineers who put weight limits on bridges should be replaced by engineers who don't have those urges. 15. Apt only as good as packages being installed on APT - With Your Favorite Distribution · · Score: 2, Insightful

When using apt there are three primary factors affecting the success of the opperation.

    1) Apt & it's ability to direct traffic.

    3) The quality of the "packages" files on the server you are retreiving packages from.

Apt will not work well if items 2 and 3 are poor. Garbage in == Garbage out. If high-quality packages are used, and the server they are on maintains accurate and up-to-date "packages" list files (where apt gets detailed info about the packages available for download) then apt will work very well. If you are still having dependancy problems with apt then it is likely that items 2 or 3 above are the root of the problem. If the food tastes bad you don't blame the plate.

Many other countries have a real strong culture in this area though. For an example, go to Autospeed, an Australian site where they post weekly articles about auto performance and electronics hacking. Australia is a real hot-spot for this stuff. It doesn't matter that the auto manufacturers are making more complex and advanced products - it just promotes the creation of more brilliant hacks.

If you're interested in programable engine management, adding electonic accessories, etc. all you have to do is dig a little and you'll find a whole world of resources. Just like Tivo, DirectTV, Audrey, or anything else - If you build it people will hack it.

Whether you're talking about a portable mp3 player, a wearable computer, or whatever the embedded application, can't you see the usefullness of being able to plug it into any computer usb port and have instant access to the file system? Here's one scenario: You have this linux-based mp3 player. You take it to work in the morning and plug it into your office pc where winamp accesses your mp3's to play through your pc sound system while you work. At the end of the day you copy the project you have been working on to the mp3 player hard disk. On the way home you stop at a friend's house and let him hear one of the new mp3's you've got. He want's a copy so you plug the player into his pc and copy the file over to his hard drive. He doesn't have broadband so you also leave him the latest 'what's cool' ISO so he can burn a copy (Hey you've got a 5gig drive on this thing, why not cary some cool stuff around) Then you go home and plug the player into your own pc and download the project you brought home from work.

If you are talking about some other embedded application it could still be very usefull. The nice thing about it would be that you can plug the thing into any pc and have instant access to the files.

  18. Oppinion from former UPS employee on How Not To Ship Computers · · Score: 5, Informative

I am very sorry that your equipment was damaged, but you made some very fatal mistakes.

    1) Posted in the UPS center where you shipped your equipment are guidelines for packing matterial and minimum crush-strength box matterial for various size/weight packages. Looking at your pictures I can see that your box did NOT meet those guidelines. I can see this just by looking at the pictures.

    2) Insurance for your package would have cost $0.35 per $100. That's only $10.50US to insure your shipment for $3,000. I called and verified this for a Canada-to-US shipment.

    3) Remember: Your package rides conveyor belts, slides down shutes, is loaded and unloaded on delivery vans, tractor-trailers, and train cars. It travels thousands of miles along with 10's of thousands of other packages some of which may weigh as much as 177lb's and somebody's pakcage has to be on the bottom of the stack. That's the reality of it.

    Here are my suggestions:
    1) Buy the insurance (duh!!!!)

    2) Pack your stuff like it's going to be air-dropped. You know the packaging your G4 came in? That's how you SHOULD have packed it. If you had it would still be fine. There is a reason a new Dell comes in a box strong enough to support a VW.

There is a reason UPS and other shippers have those packing guidelines posted. And the reason they offer insurance is for the people who don't read the shipping guidelines. Sometimes packages that are done right do get damaged, but not often.

Shippers dont' intentionally harm your packages. The damage most likely occured durring transit in a tractor-trailer or box-car. The employees don't kick and drop packages. They just don't. UPS is VERY consious of this. If you are seen intentionally damaging a package you are FIRED ON THE SPOT. I saw a guy get a written warning for dropping a package just 6 inches. I saw another guy get fired for eating a jolly-rancher candy that fell out of a damaged package.

I'm sorry your equipment was damaged. I know you are upset and I know it sucks when this sort of thing happens. I hope my comments will help you avoid having this happen to you again.

TIP: if you want to ship something and absolutely insure it's safety, ship it in a hard plastic cooler. They come in all sizes and are the most indistructible thing you'll ever find. People ship fragile scientific instruments back and forth in GOTT coolers (with the lits taped down) all the time and they never get damaged. I know you can't get a mid-tower pc in one, but I just thought I'd mention it.
