Not that this has anything to do with what the software is doing, but some of the differences between the two images are similar to what you get when you compare a portrait taken with a wide-angle and one taken with a telephoto. There's a reason why wide-angle lenses usually make poor portrait lenses. They exaggerate apparent relative distances on the Z plane, with bulging eyes, lips, and nose, and too-small ears. Judging from the look of her face, I'm guessing that the original was taken with a wide-angle. If so, the difference between the image and how a person's eye would see her is going to be the same kind of difference this software generates. The face is distorted, but easily recognizable. I'd go so far to say that, with so many portraits now taken with camera phones and the like, the distortion has become commonplace and looks normal.

Soon the misuse will become part of the definition, like "beg the question". I understand that language needs to be pliant and change, but I wish it wasn't so susceptible to laziness. This isn't out of any snobbery about purity; it's a practical matter. As words lose their distinctions and become more generic, the English language becomes diluted and loses its ability to be succinct. So now "robot" is losing its automation and is becoming just another remote-controlled device.

Take out the "not" in the original and you get "at 192k, he starts to become less annoyed".

This implies that he was annoyed and at 192k, he starts to become less so at that point.

Put the "not" back in, and at 192k, his lessening annoyance, which started earlier (128k) and was lessening as the bit rate rose, stopped.

if you show up in the middle of the night, and it's dark, and you really have to go, it's a bit of a pain to always have to feel to see if the seat is up or down before you let it all out. Isn't this exactly the argument most often used by women?

Unfortunately, I think think this make the opposite argument of what you intended. If it's always up or always down, you never have to search. In the dark, you know right where it is. If it's left in the last position, you have to search each time.

I'm not saying it counters the entire argument, just that portion.

  14. I seem to be the oddball on Is Music More Lasting Than Graphics In Games? · · Score: 1

I find game music to be annoying repetitive at best. No matter how good it is, I get sick of it after a few loops. Sure, I smile whenever I hear a snippet of music from Doom, but that's only because I recognize it from the title screen. I always play my games without music. It's too distracting for me. It certainly isn't what makes or breaks a game. They could license from Barry Manilow for all I care.

  15. Re:No freaking way on Would Ansel Adams Have Gone Digital? · · Score: 1

While I agree that LoPinto trying to sell Nikons (there's no way Adams would settle for anything out of the current crop), I don't agree with your assessment of the quality of digital prints. Inkjets equiped with a B&W quadtone system are capable of tonal ranges that surpass that of photographic paper. The shadow detail you can obtain is amazing. The reason you don't see that kind of quality in books is because the cost to mass produce such output would put the list price out of reach of most people. I myself have only just now decided that digital has become good enough for me to replace my film equipment, and I'm only shooting on 35mm. If Adams were around in another ten years... ? Well, that's another story, since the question is "would he go digital?" and not "would he go digital now?"

  16. M42 mount and primes on Best 35mm SLR Camera for Beginners? · · Score: 1

M42 mount lenses and bodies are plentiful and various. You have many choices in manufacturers, build quality, and prices. You won't be getting any whiz-bang features, but you can put together a nice system for a low outlay.

I'd also go for prime lenses (35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 200mm, etc) instead of zooms (35mm-105mm, 100mm-300mm, etc). Most people think that a zoom is for saving you from walking. Wrong! You choose the focal length first, then walk to where you can frame the picture correctly. Sure, there are times when you don't have a lot of room to move around, but the focal length you choose has a HUGE inpact on the outcome of the picture. It should be a conscious choice.

Prime lenses allow you to open up the aperture more, so they are more useful in low-light and when you want to shorten the amount of focal depth. With a 50mm f1.4, you can blur the background quite well, but zooms often only open up to f4. The quality of lenses tend to be better also, as compromises don't have to be made for a range of focal lengths.
