  1. Cyrus IMAP on Recommendations for the Right IMAP Server? · · Score: 1

    I'm using Cyrus on a Mandrake box for my home, comes with the mandrake distro, easy to setup, and the entire family can use it. Just using fetchmail to pop accounts, and imap to serve it. Then turn on Spam Assassian, and your set.

    Only problem I have, is Cyrus IMAP doesnt delete folders. Works with outlook express and thunderbird/mozilla.

    One of the things I like to do before buying a game is go cruise the support forums and see how things are going. If you see lots of "Broken", "Wont Run" "Crashs" threads, gives a clue to wait till they patch.

    After being burned by Anarchy online and its patches, the only reason to lock forums is to hide problems. And dont even start with Tribes2 and its whole patch fiasco.

    Tired of wasting my time on 50 dollar games, that have these huge amount of bugs. Time is starting to be more valuable to me these days, and 10 minutes reading a forum is better than wasting days on playing a broken, crap release.

    Dont believe the excuses about non-regs posting, free registeration covers that. And bandwidth usage for non-players is another excuse. The truth is to hide the ammount of posts, hide the ammount of players, and hide the bugs.

    OF course, I could be wrong. ;)

    You know Intellectual property laws are messed up, when you cant show real people using real products without bluring of the names/logos. You cant even mention the name of the product without approval. Amazing freespeech has taken this kid of hit.

    True. 100hz refresh is flicker free. 100fps has smooth action.

    Real bitch is we finally get Cards that can push games past 30fps to 100fps, and then you enable AA and drops like a rock.

    Then GFX cards that rock at AA are released, then the games push the polygons up so even 3ghz CPU's and 256Meg cutting edge GFX cards can only pump 30fps in a fire fight.

    CS with 6x AA and high poly skins looks awesome. Cant wait to see how HL2/Doom3 work on normal hardware.

    Two Tennessee tennagers have pleaded guilty to charges of reckless homicide, reckless endangerment, and aggravated assault because, last June, they thought it would be fun to fire a high caliber rifle at the highway. They killed one motorist and wounded two others. They claimed they got the idea from the game Grand Theft Auto III.

    Of course they will blame video games, better than the death sentence. The legal system is full of "Pass the Buck" excuses.

    I tell ya, if the RIAA comes after me, I might have to close down my Wifi. I dont legally have to monitor my neighborhood Wifi, so I dont. Logs are for a police state.

    If my ISP lets me have open Wifi, so I do.

    You don't NEED a 300 page manual to use it.

    Thats the problem, crippled manuals only get you so far. There are too many "Gotchas" on iDvd/iMovie that mess up the whole process. Step outside the "Basic" process of making a video, and you find out quick the need for some extend help files.

    Reading all the posts about if Mac users are techincal or not. The real issue is what happens when you do something "Non-Standard" that seems logical.

    I've had a hell of a time, trying to figure out why 16:9 DV video wouldnt work correctly in iMovie. Seems 16:9 isnt supported even thou sony handycams support it, and seem to be a very popular brand. So now I'm stuck with 16:9 video I cant use on my expensive mac. Being told I need to buy $1000 dollars worth of software to use the video.

    Also, why You cant just export into Mpeg2 and have some good utiltiies to cut/chop the video.

    Many things I can do under linux and windows, just seem impossible to do with standard tools, or the "Trick" to get something done isnt known to a new mac user.

    Why did I buy a mac? Wanted to test out all the features, and ease of use, and play with OSX. There is alot of power there, but there are many missing features, or alternative methods to get a task done. You can dumb down help guids too much, and Apples help file is on par with "Idiots howto Guides". This book is on my must buy list.

    I have a Dual G4, thought I was getting ripped off, 5 months later and they announce the G5's as G4 crushers. Glad to know that it isnt true. I would of really felt bad if the the Single G5 CPU's crushed the dual 1.42ghz. Quickest drop in price I've had on computer hardware in some time. Also my first Apple purchase. DOH!

    BTW, Tiger Direct has Dual 2.4ghz Xeons for 1600 bux.

    NO CD cracks are perfectly legal, and makes games load quicker. You still have to own the game to play online (or a legit authcode), so it is NOT PIRACY!

    NOCD Cracks are a godsend for lan parties, why would I want to take all my CD's, when there are 15 different games up, fuck swapping discs. Bad enough you pay 50 bux for a game or 200 bux for an OS to be treated like a criminal.

    Its tough being a consumer.

    Who said its not a spectator game?

    There are game demos online, that thousands have downloaded. There are relay servers where people watch actual games, with upto 100 people watching at a time.

    Even IRC broadcasts of games going.

    There are people who want to watch, and even travel to lan parties (which cost to attend). The largest Lan party in Seattle had over 2000 people at 35 bux a pop to attend. And ATI/Via sponsered giving away a few pieces of hardware.

    Also there are pay tv channels for gamers, where all you do is "watch" ;)

    Maybe Funny or Troll, but not Insightful.

    There are people who dabble in games, then there are teams who practice, go over stratagy, tactics, roles, etc. They devote hours every night to play in online leagues.

    Hell, even the Armed forces uses videos games, but they call them Simulation training. Pilots train for hours on virtual aircraft.

    Blame it on the LAG!

    Going to some bigger named lan parties, the guys who win are mostly the local clans who practice and play together. When youre a lone player going to the lan, its wise to join up with a good team. Most games are squad/team based, so normally only local teams can all afford to go.

    BTW, for all those posts about "Professional Players" are a joke, dont understand what it takes to become a professional player. Learning the maps, tactics, weapon techniques, positions, roles of each player, timing, etc. Large amounts of time. Thats the problem with some new multiplayer games, by the time you buy it, there are people with months of experience that knows all the tricks. This drives off lots of new people.

    Remember the tank rush in c&c, that made many people give up on the game.

    Actually, with demos reaching almost a gig on release, using fileplanet was the best method to get new files. But now with bittorrent, new releases should be easier than ever to download.

    Hell, Digitally Imported has many flavors of techno. Some are Trace, Hard Trance, Vocal Trance, Euro Dance, Goa-psy Trance, Deep House, Hard House, Classic Techno, Chillout, DJ Mixes which only cover some of the 60 different electronica "Techno" type music genres.

    While 7% of revenue or 10% of expenses (whichever is greater) for the last 4 years on a shoestring budget would put alot of small mom/pop/kid radio stations out of business.

    Funny how Record industries will pay to get thier music played on FM Radio, but on the net, they will just start their own partially owned net Radio stations and crunch the little guys.

    So, wheres the good free (non-riaa) Indie radio stations? With all the talk of "F*CK" the RIAA, wheres the alternative Garage/Indie/etc radio? I listen to Techno, and the best streams are UK Based. Wheres the alternatives?

    After training, SA does a good job, but really, it catches only around 90% of my spam. I do every once and while, sa-learn spam on my spam folder and ham on my mailing lists/work folders, to keep it updated. I've also put the blacklists in the global prefs to keep it updated. Still 90% reduction is nice.

    But, Thunderbird catchs the rest, hardly any spam makes it through now.

    Dont know why we didnt see Mozilla's filters (Maybe thats covered under Bayesain filters?)

    I'm using the standalone Thunderbird and it catchs everything that passes by Spamassassin. Spam is marked but never deleted, so I can go back and check. Some spam programs will delete email, which could delete a good email, unacceptable.

    Basically, I'm using a mandrake linux box, imap, procmail, fetchmail and spamassassin. Easy, and I can send/receive email from my linux box, and port 25 is blocked from the Net so nobody can use me as a bouncer.

    Only problem I had was, there was no complete document to set this up, I had to piece each part together.

    So for anyone who wants to know, heres the quick steps.

    1. I'm using mandrake, but had to update SA for the sa-learn utils. (Gotta train SpamAssassin)
    2. Setup fetchmail in your personal account.
    3. Setup .procmailrc in your home dir

    Bought the firstgen netgears, rather crappy hardware. It did NAT well enough, but it couldnt handle too many machines, ipsec was broken, port mapping was not well implemented, access lists where poor and limited.

    Got a dlink wireless router, same mistakes, dyndns was broken, pnat had restrictions.

    Then I switched to FloppyFW and a P233 and pci nic cards, linux based. This is what funcationality a nat router should have, basically a linux router with all applications and good updated iptables.

    Next step, just do everything manually on a mandrake linux box, with iptables bandwidth limiting.

    I'm not impressed with it the screenshots for longhorn, they dont show all the transparency and other options longhorn includes.

    Where are the Gui's you see in Anime? The ones with multiple overlapping, transparent windows that pop up with information, and a nice loading screen and color videos. The closest thing ive seen is the frame buffer xwin replacement. OSX is pretty close, but use the 1 window model.

  25. Automated Ports testing, and Fink/Gentoo/Darwrin.. on Broken FreeBSD Ports Scheduled for Removal · · Score: 4, Informative

    With the work going on with Freebsd/Gentoo/Fink/Darwin to work on a combined port system, I'm wondering if there is a automated ports checker to verify which ports compile out of the box? Seems there is alot of work that needs to be done to weed out the broken ports, and report ports with compile errors.

    Also, a while back there was an OpenBSD announcement that the ports collection for both Open and Free had almost 20% ports that where broken. This small list is what, 3%? (guess)

    Nice to see them to work on cleaning some ports, but is there a grand plan?
