All that said I am in favor of all the software and efforts to help Chinese people blog anonymously. I believe the more communication the better, the fourth estate serves the government and the internet helps subvert that.

They probably used a dictionary attack and found out various passwords. They dictionary would be things like the %username%, password, asdf1234, admin, root, apple, hello... This can be done very fast compared to brute force. What the script does it gets the word to guess hashes it the same way as the password does (eg SHA-1) and if they match you have the password.
