    There is a lot less viruses and spyware for linux. However I belive there are plenty of rootkits avaliable for Linux cause thats where root comes from.

    Cygwin, it allows you to use open source software that the developers can't be bothered removing posix dependencies for.

    DRM is not for preventing piracy
    Exactly it is a tool to prevent competition eg Intel Macs have drm so they force you to buy their inflated hardware and not by cheaper or better products.
    iTunes/ipod drm prevents people from usuing other music formats,
    css gives software dvd players a very large market share (how many legal dvd players are there?)
    Also it forces people to pay for replacements instead of getting it from their backups.

    Thankfully, systems today have tons of memory and disk space. Since the unused classes will just be swapped out to disk anyway, there's no real concern. So quit whining, and enjoy what the Java platform has to offer. :-)
    That method of thinking is why windows vista requires so much memory.

    What Java has is an extensive set of libraries that provide all kinds of common functionality.
    What about console opperations eg read input from console?

    The only real solution to this dichotomy is to make Java an operating system component.

    If it doesn't require XMS/EMS try VDMSound. A P4 2.53 ghz, with a geforce 440 MX? can run tie fighter, XCom Ufo smoothly with dos box.
