After thinking about it a bit more, he vicious cycle that you mention - which I guess we can basically just call 'progress' - is in the end a good thing because you do get genuine benefits occasionally. Even in Microsoft Office I guess, which is my favourite product to get pissed off at when people want to upgrade just for the sake of it (next in line would be Windows, and then comes the CAD programs the engineers use here). Through the last few versions of Office the only thing I've noticed being different (apart from things like PST formats >.
The vacuousness of our natures does show up in all parts of life, and we all do encourage it, things like wanting a new shape on our car, or wanting shinier graphics in our games. I love shiny graphics too, but I'd take gameplay over graphics anyday. Well, okay.. 9 out of 10 days - you have to be able to go "oooooh that's cool" occasionally;) 90% substance, 10% style seems like a good balance!
Not that many SUVs in the UK, but I get your point. The thing is, that Microsoft (and car manufacturers, though cars do rust over time, while software only goes 'out of style') kind of forces this on consumers by only selling the latest and 'greatest' versions of their products. All software companies do this, but with Microsoft the effect is a lot stronger because so many people use their software, and the formats aren't great for backwards compatability.
"Simply because you can do something, doesn't mean you should."
I thought that was one of Microsofts' main beliefs.. simply because they can put out (largely) pointless new versions of Office and Windows, they do. They also charge insane amounts for little extra functionality, just because they can. At least people are catching on a bit with Vista.
Yep... what is the point? Without all the seams it would be kinda cool (for a couple of minutes), but as it is, it seems to be a totally useless novelty.
I have a cunning plan to achieve all three of these goals in one fell swoop. All I will need, is a toothpick, some weapons grade plutonium, and roughly 5 billion billion billion USD.
I was dual booting for a while too. For me the first problem was that I couldn't run GTA:SA on WINE (while Vice City worked fine -.-), and then the killer problem was that my gf was on a different continent, and the Linux version of skype didn't support video calling.
Writing this just now on Mac OS X, I should setup a shared area for my bookmarks (had considered it, didn't know if it was possible or not). One of the main benefits of using a non-Windows OS for browsing is that you can be fairly sure you're not gonna get owned at least, no matter what you're doing;)
I doubt it, Windows seems to know what type of CPU I have when I go to 'my computer'. When I was using my AMD system I knew that it was a K6 processor type, and I downloaded the appropriate kernel/binaries for it though, surely it's not that difficult to do a bit of googling to find out what processor you have?
I think it's much better than wasting hours killing NPCs that you already know you will be able to kill, all it takes is time. I take it you also prefer to grow your own food in your back garden, and generate all your own electricity from a dynamo on your exercise-bike (which you built yourself by refining the metal-ore, etc etc:P)? I do play one MMORPG just now, and I do put in the grinding time on occasion just for something to do, but I much prefer games where the skill is actually the skill of the player playing, and not just something that has resulted from you spending 2 years of your life killing dumbass NPCs..
Not to mention that the words had to disappear to somewhere, and I'm guessing they were emitted out of his ass like the rest, but somehow came to rest in a different location than his bLoggings.
Yeah, I've always wondered what the fuss is about Halo. I tried the first one on the PC and it was complete and utter crap. I also played Halo 2 multiplayer on X-Box and was similarly unimpressed (not least because I hate playing FPSs without mouse and keyboard - a joystick is never going to be as precise as a mouse.. maybe they should build trackballs into joypads? that's at least a step closer to more precise control).
Now they just have to combine space stations/planets with a GTA IV style engine and it would be a space sim that I actually want to play:P I heard Frontier IV was going to actual model populations on each planet. Flying around in space is all well and good, but it's usually quite dull compared to being able to land on a planet and interact beyond some little 2D trading display/whatever.
It's difficult to contribute to him though, as he's chained up in a basement somewhere. Katana wielding maniacs may be able to find and free him though.
Is that a remotely networked kitten in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

Im in ur pockets, jackin ur keez
No.. I'm the original Anonymous Cowardus!
tbh, I wouldn't mind being trapped by boobies
"(for example, while it is stored in your pocket)"
Missed that bit of the summary did you? Sounds like they can do it all remotely.. may someone who has RTFA could shine some light on this area

Heh.

Yeah - you can't use your brakes until you answer his questions.

It was a woman that said it, so isn't that allowed..? I hate all this PC stuff anyway, I prefer Macs.

Don't worry, it will become entangled at some point. Or it might not. You can't really win.
Al? Didn't he invent the internet? Surely there is nobody more qualified change history for the better.
W T F. How easy is it to compose neural networks with these things? That could be interesting :P
Must have been Schrödinger's desktop
Either that was automated, or you have no idea what you're talking about.. gtfo /. o_0
