  1. ugh on Adobe Acquiring Macromedia on December 3, 2005 · · Score: 0

I use Acrobat Pro for 90% of what I do at work. I can only hope that this merger will force some versatility into the pdf format. We're stuck making our data compatible with 4.0, which is virtually impossible when you generate a pdf in 7. If we can't make it backwards compatible, a massive customer can't access data they are paying for. But Adobe doesn't care. It's more important to make image masks easier to genrate. Too many widgets, not enough usefulness.

I would wager to say that while P2P program use has gone down, the traffic and availability of illegal files (especially MP3's) is likely at an all time high... just not on as grand of a scale. Outlets like AIM, Gmail, and YouSendIt being the culprits. Additionally, BitTorrent seems to be regarded by the technical layperson as something that is not illegal.

    Digital speakeasys abound.

sounds like you need one of those ClickCat things from Radio Shack infomercials a few years back. it was the dumb thing that brought you to a product webpage by scanning a barcode, and automatically popped up a product website on you TV if it broadcast a certain signal during a show or commercial.

Unfortunately, the name seems to belong to a pdf converter/easy html program so no dice on a link. I had a bunch of them since they were free, and could easily be hacked to do many random useless things.

  5. the bottom line on The ESRB Gets An 'F' · · Score: 0

The bottom line is painfully apparent. Ever since games like Custer's Revenge and Duke Nukem, the main focus and revulsion of parents groups et al is sex in video games. The same is generally true of television and movies as well. It's not as if people don't have a problem with violence, but it is not something the average person ends up participating. Not everyone flips out and shoots a place up, but a lot of people have sex before marriage.

The fear is for the objectification and trivialization of sexual activity. Sex in any media, like games, is purported to broadcast a message that it is not a big deal. Our country is dangerously tight-lipped about discussing contexts of sex, which I think can be damaging; even dangerous if people have not been taught to be responsible.

This group doesn't care about violence, they want games with any trace of sex to stop telling kids that it's ok to do it.

working in XML in content development, I really can't add personal flair to code; many cooks are working on one pot. This sort of space exploration is realively cheap, considering the payoffs involved. I suggest we knock off a couple "bridges to nowhere" from our budget, or ask for some money back from the Big Dig, instead. There's still a pothole big enough to swallow a Vespa on Washington St in Roxbury Crossing. Maybe we can divert some Big Dig funding to send in a rover.

  11. the internet and names on Blizzard Made Me Change My Name · · Score: 0

Callsigns and handles, along with even real names on the internet are tough to manage. I had a PVP barbarian in Diablo II that was just fine for almost a year, until the character diappeared from my account... apparently my "badass barbarian" sounding made up word (which I cannot remember) was one letter away from being "fuck" in some obscure Middle-European language. No rename, no time to mule off items... gone. And it took a while of bugging to even find out why. Not that it was a huge loss, but I don't like having to start over and get back up to the lvl 90's. I've never really done the online game thing since then.

In terms of real names, I share the birth name of Kevin Spacey, as well as the name of a popular Texas country musician http://kevinfowler.com/. Trying to use my given name and surname on the internet for portfolio sites for my (at one time) burgeoning journalistic career was useless, and using a middle name is clunky and sounds like I've assassinated someone. Even using my middle name Google finds found five pages of sites with the aforementioned people along with a random person who shares my middle name, before I even showed up. So am I forced to change my name if I wish to be unique in the world of Kevin Fowlers?

Excuse the slight off topic slide.

Am I the only one that just tied my creature to a tree and threw the opposing villagers off the tops of mountains? That never got old. This looks like a better sandbox than the first, and adding RTS elements might add a much-needed depth that was woefully missing from the first, especially if creature management is better. In the first game I can think of many times when the creature was breakdancing and petting people one minute, yet pooping on and collapsing roofs and throwing people into the ocean the next.

  13. I refer to my large laptop as a "portable desktop" on Get Ready For The 20-inch Laptop · · Score: 0

I bought a 15.4" widescreen display "laptop" to use as more of a portable desktop/gaming/media device. It's got a bigger display than my TV and looks a lot better. I don't have enough space in my apt for my lumbering hulk of a desktop and CRT monitor. I can see why these "laptops" are being created. Comcast's new commercials seem to only feature people using laptops. Regardless of the ridiculous size and weight of some of them, laptops are being presented as more hip and usable than a desktop. There's a rift developing in laptops. On one side are the media beasts with 20" displays, likely ending up being used in a home... and on the other there's the compact business traveler 12" model you can actually use on the subway.
