What happen to being the security realist, Kendall? I have to install a 3rd party firewall on my clients to be more secure, thats not convenient or practical. Same with installing virus protection. Same with Captas. And that is only scratching the surface. The reality is, you need to sacrifice convenience and practicality for security. Here is a reference that somewhat backs this claim: http://www.cio.com/article/102252/Security_Before_ Convenience_Say_Online_Bankers
Then you (or your company) are already doomed, because what you say is not practical for everything. Security is not practical. Quite the opposite. Bill Gates keeps saying that security should be invisible, but you see his track record. But really, it depends on your risk. For some companies, the iPhones' security posture is ok. For some, no way. Overall, I think enterprise phones from Nokia are years ahead of the iPhone when it comes to security. We are going to have to agree to disagree.
When I first held an iPhone in my hand, I was in awe at the leap in UI for a phone. Mommy, I want one! There are a lot of great things about the iPhone. There I said it.
So, if you lose the device why do you need to wipe it remotely? Defense in depth, the cornerstone of security. You may have cached web pages, cookies CAN leave important stuff (like session information), contact lists, email server connectivity information, etc.
If in fact Apple has made it easy to apply security patches and users do so, that's even better than IT having to be the ones to try and make that happen by force. I disagree. You cannot trust a user when it comes to security. You need to do it by force. IT needs to control security, not your end user.
Look man, first of all I should have answered your post in a more polite and respectful way, my apologies.
I submit that you cannot trust a user to patch anything unless it is done automagically. With Windows mobile and nokia enterprise class phones, you can force an update and/or wipe the entire phone remotely without user intervention (or even knowledge!). With the iPhone, you depend on user interaction. That's normally considered a poor security posture, even for security realists.
It could be worse, we could all be forced to use proprietary locked down mac's with Steve Jobs permission to only use the Safari Browser! SOMEONE HELP! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhh...........
Just because the ps2 was the most successful, dont think it was graphical power that got them there. Yes. It was the (1) cheapnsess of the ps2 and more importantly (2) It was the amazing abundant plethora of titles that made (and continues to make) the ps2 the most popular and the most bought (even now) console.
It does not matter at all. Software engineering (coding) is a job where you need to learn by doing. And learning software engineering will provide a (needed) base for all other IT. One of the best programmers on my team - really skilled productive coder and architect - has a rocks-for-jocks geography degree!
I wake up to the sound of my gal grinding coffee beans. I roll out of bed, jump in the shower, and by the time I hit my desk with only a towel in (I live in Hawaii), my coffee is sitting on my desk waiting for me (thanks honey). I fire up IM to let my team know I'm around, and then check email focusing on responding to client email right away (they pay the bills). If any fires are underway, I will either have past IM logs beep me as trillian finishes firing up my many identities, or my team starts chirping at me about what is going on. I then fire up putty, dbVisualizer, FireFox and IE and start logging onto systems (like our bugtraq and internal project dashboard) and get status where appropriate. If I have a early meeting, I fire up my webcam and put on a nice shirt, shave and at least look good from the waist up (still with towel on sometimes). I lead a software engineering team remotely. Life is good.
My girlfriend continues to rail against "all of the killing and murder going on in her house" every night as I game. I try to tell her than I am I am trying to save the world.
And here is another fairly recent article and gives more ammo to my argument: http://consumerist.com/consumer/fraud/att-phone-st olen-youre-still-responsible-for-the-450-in-soft-c ore-porn-downloads-284922.php
I agree, but the RSI after 10 years of coding is killing me. Anyone know of a RSI friendly mouse?

The whole point was they don't need to, because it's easily handled by the user.
This is, by far, the most ignorant security comment on Slashdot I have ever read. You are a fool sir, at least when it comes to security.
And what does this have to do with plugging into your mother? See parent...
Oh comon, thats a drop in the bucket. The likes of Google shit 4 billion after lunch!
yes, but it's still a core part of Trek lore: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beam_me_up,_Scotty
"Beam me up, Scotty!"

You can fix this by just taking out the battery of your iPhone. Oh wait....
That's Steve Jobs secret sig. You didn't know? *waves to Steve, nice black polo you got there, bub!*

That article points back to one key resource - Slashdot! Someone Help! I'm in an endless loop! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.............
Oh comon, not fair. When you have women and a movie industry like Sweeden has, it's hard not to be motivated all the time - no pun intended.

You forgot to mention all motivation being sucked away from everyone in a socialist society.
Hmmm, I hope NASA paid the dealer an extra $100 for the onsite warranty! A killer deal!
So you are having a meta-meta-discussion now? Dude, pop the stack.

OMG PONIES!
Ok, who wants to write a service that combines many free accounts to have one big multi-gig online storage engine for free?
