    A better analogy would be; "When I buy a spoon, I don't complain that it isn't a fork." The iPad was never designed to completely replace the PC for all use cases. This is why tablets have failed in the past, and why the Surface will suffer the same fate.

    What is it about slashdot comment authors who do not understand the difference between conservative and liberal?

    Conservatives believe in a conservative approach to government (imagine that). Extreme conservatism is a very small, relatively weak government. Extreme liberalism is a large, powerful government. Do you really think Nazi Germany was a small, weak government? Either you don't have the faintest understanding of politics or history.

    Their decision to use PHP has absolutely nothing to do with cost. Also saying they use PHP is mostly false. They have almost completely rewritten the entire engine that powers the language.

    Seeing what cell phones looked like prior to, and after the launch of, the iPhone is fairly amazing.

    This paper tries to predict temperature changes based on multiple scenarios of CO2 ppm emissions.

    There are 2 fundamental problems, however. 1) There were no uncertainty ranges given. We can't say that a 30% deviation from one of the scenarios is accurate or inaccurate without these ranges. 2) The actual CO2 ppm emissions do not fall within the bounds of any of the proposed scenarios.

    All we can say, definitively, is that events transpired outside the bounds of any of the scenarios and the results were outside the prediction of any of the scenarios. I fail to see the significance here.

    I don't smoke. Never have, never will. In my state they outlawed smoking pretty much everywhere. I breathe cleaner air everywhere I go.

    Guess what? I'm still against that legislation. I believe a private business should have the right to allow a perfectly legal activity occur within their premises. The Free Market will solve this problem - if enough people only patron at businesses that do not allow smoking, the pro-smoke places will go bankrupt.

    I believe the Free Market would solve this also. If 2 year warranties were that important, individuals would buy competitor products that have 2 year warranties. I do not believe in more laws and regulation for the sake of more laws and regulation.

    He was never elected as a conservative governor of a liberal state. He was elected as a liberal governor of a liberal state. This is why he is unlikable among conservatives and republicans. He does not have a conservative drop of blood in his body.

    If this was true, there would be 100 stories on Slashdot promoting Romney. This is the most liberal site I visit, and the opportunity of having 2 liberal presidential candidates would make this place giddy.

    Only on Slashdot is this garbage modded insightful. Romney saved more businesses and jobs than were lost while being a venture capitalist. Even the most liberal CNN anchors admit that Romney did not dodge a dime of taxes in his returns. Saying the Republican party is racist is flat out flamebait.

    and look where it got us. Home prices are continuing to plummet, all of my health care plans at work are more expensive, unemployment way above the 7% figure that Obama "promised" we would never cross, etc.

    These garbage posts are ruining slashdot anyway. If Romney was so unlikable he wouldn't have been elected as a conservative governor of one of the most liberal states and wouldn't have won Florida by double digits yesterday.

    I would say the majority of Slashdot readers using Java do so in an enterprise environment. The Java Enterprise Edition (JEE) specification is controlled by the JCP, where Oracle has heavy influence. JEE application servers adhere strictly to this spec.

    The Earth's climate is a massively complex system that has been constantly changing for billions of years. The climate wasn't static before we showed up.

    Problem is we don't have the slightest clue what climate change is sustainable by the Earth and what changes aren't. If you think of the Earth's life as one 24 hour period, we've been around for a couple seconds. One thing we do know for sure is the Earth has sustained much warmer and much cooler periods than we're living in currently.

    Some? Try most. A conservative approach to government is limited and unobtrusive - just enough and no more. An extremely conservative approach would be anarchy - no government control at all. This represents your 'true free market.'

    I don't know of anyone who advocates your definition of a 'true free market.' We need a a set of regulations in order to ensure fair competition and fair rights for workers.

    Your premise is the iPad has dominated the high-end tablet market and that is about to change. You justify this by comparing the tablet market to the smartphone market.

    Here is the problem: Android marketshare is due to the number of low-end Android smartphones on the market, not the high-end ones. In 2011 the top 3 selling smartphones in the US will be the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPhone 4S. There are very few 'luxury' Android phones and those don't sell extremely well.

    SWTOR has 8 distinct storylines from levels 1-50, and this doesn't count the light/dark choices available. While you happen to be on the same planet and in the same area as another player, your purpose for being there is completely different. This is completely revolutionary to MMO gaming. Traditionally you hop from city to city simply to obtain that 1 extra level and move on. In SWTOR your character is participating in a story to save the world, and has a distinct purpose for being there. This results in a level of attachment to your character, other NPC characters, and the world as a whole not seen in other MMOs.

    I guarantee most players will level 1-50 with different classes simply to experience the other storylines. The writing in this game surpasses most Hollywood movies nowadays.

    Of course CO2 emitted by man affects global climate. CO2 emitted by every creature does the same. There is no living being on this planet that does not affect the climate around it.

    Problem is we have so little understanding of how the earth reacts to these changes over time. The earth has sustained itself through *much* more drastic changes than anything man has introduced.

    Best thing we can do is observe common sense. Recycle, limit chemicals released into the atmosphere, etc. Problem is we've been spending trillions and trillions of dollars in order to be "green" beyond simple common sense activities when we have absolutely no idea if that money is well spent.

    Unreal how some think "deniers" believe that climate change doesn't exist. The earth's climate has been constantly evolving over billions of years.

    Problem is we've been able to accurately measure the minuscule changes in climate for about 50 of 14 billion years. Second problem is we have absolutely no idea what climate changes the earth can sustain and which ones the earth cannot sustain.

    Still no definite answers here. Some of this junk research "confirming" that climate change exists adds confusion to those not smart enough to understand this.

    The earth has been warming and cooling for billions of years. To prove this has been caused by man, have the guy who went back in time to start that process come to my house.

    Any moron can do 2 seconds of research to learn about these climate change cycles. You can also easily find evidence that man, along with every living thing on this planet, has some effect on the earth and its climate.

    The trillion dollar question: what changes can the earth not sustain? I always hear the conspiracy theorists point to melting of the polar ice caps. Ice has been freezing and melting for billions of years - there is no hills within 100 miles of my house as proof. Guess what? The earth is still here. Real science will find what changes cannot be sustained by earth, not reproducing experiments that prove nothing.

    Read it. The great majority of the PATRIOT ACT is common sense - things our law enforcement has done for decades (without issue) when pursuing drug lords. Many of the overreaching pieces were taken out long ago. The sensationalism of the tinfoilers around here never ceases to amaze me.

    You blame the 'right' for being ignorant on your view of net neutrality without understanding theirs. You could have made your point without being blatantly offensive also.

    As a conservative, freedom of expression means freedom from government intervention into my everyday life. I do not need government regulation on what TV I choose to watch, what food I wish to eat, and how I wish to use the Internet.

    The answer to every problem is *not* more laws and regulation. This should be an absolute last resort, and personally I do not believe we are there yet.

    The man with the most liberal voting record in the Senate since taking his seat has convinced America to listen to his voice rather than watching his actions.

    I hope Obama follows what he says rather than continuing his divisive stances. You don't have to look hard to find some simple research on his past votes.

    His thoughts on personal responsibility as the solution to our economic troubles are very conservative, even Reaganesque. He then hints at socializing healthcare.

    Living in Illinois I cannot trust any politician from this state, but I hope he proves me wrong.

    We've discovered something about ourselves, style matters over substance today. A man with little to no political accomplishments in his career was able to win the presidency by reading speaches written by others and looking more attractive than his opponent.

    I took one look at his voting record in the Senate and made up my mind immediately. He has by far the most radical political history of any candidate of a major party, and he was able to hide this for over 2 years successfully.

    At this point we can all just hope his voting record was a fluke. I doubt it.

    I am a middle class American taxpayer. I believe I spend my money more intelligently than a Government, so I'm voting for the candidate who will really lower my taxes. Both yourself and your opponent pledge to do so.

    My question is, how can you lower taxes while drastically increasing funding into socialized health care?
