Comcast has also been killing VPN connections and competing VOIP services for years. I have personally run into a number of clients that are working fine and then all of the sudden they can't VPN in anymore. The common denominator is Comcast.
I haven't had direct issues with Comcast and 3rd party VOIP but I do have a number of IT buddies that have. The have had to resort to changing ports to non standard ranges in order to get their Vonage working.
You are focusing on the wrong part of the problem.
Gun are designed with the ultimate goal of being capable of killing something. Different guns are designed with different types of targets and situations in mind. Some guns are designed for shooting animals some are designed for shooting people but neither are the problem.
The Problems lies in humanity. For as long as humans have recorded our history there has been conflict that ended in bloodshed and death. For most of our history this bloodshed was accomplished without fire arms but we have always found ways to make weapons that suited our needs. You can try to take away fire arms from the equation of humanity to reduce violence but it will not help. People intent on violence always find a way to cause harm.
If it is World Peace we must identify what drives people to violence. Is summary gun violence is a symptom not a cause violent behavior, remove the symptom with out curing the cause and it will reassert itself in another way. Completely eradicating violence completely is probably not possible but I do believe that it can be largely eliminated with the efforts of people like you. I just want you to focus your energy in the right direction. So next time you see gun violence you think why is this person or people violent and what can be done to change the social dynamic so they don't feel the need to be violent?
Verizon has always lied about how they handle their physical connections.
Back in the day they kept telling me that I could get DSL only to cancel my order without notice. That happened 4 time over 6 months before I finally got a guy that would admit that they had run out of DSLAM ports. I couldn't believe that it took six months to find out that they couldn't keep up with demand so they were just canceling my accounts. Sadly they were the only option I had so I kept at it until I finally got a connection.:-/... so yeah I'm not surprised by this at all.
It's sad how some smart people both smart and dumb don't have any common sense. For example I remember a story about a woman that was mailing out invitations to her wedding. They were having it on the beach so she decided to put a teaspoon of sand with the invitations in each envelope. This was during the Anthrax scare that happened not long after 9/11. Can you guess what happend when post office saw some sand fall out of one of the envelopes?
Do you know what an IED looks like? Are you a bomb expert? I have a friend that is and that device does look similar to an IED. click here for an example and then decide if that doesn't look like a bomb.
"One report about Gilmore notes: "PAX (passenger) has many small flashlights with pot leaves on them. He had a book entitled 'Drugs and Your Rights.'""
Gee, that's not important in the least, no sir, no transportation of illegal substances or under the influence...yeah, no way important....
Fine they caught a guy smuggling POT. What's the worst he's going to do with that pot, smoke it on the plane and get everyone high? I'm not some drug activist. I don't smoke, do drugs, or even drink I just think there are more troublesome things out there than pot.
The real point is do they need to spy on what people are reading to figure that one out. They have dogs that can sniff out drugs and bombs why do they need to know if people are reading about drugs.
When it is dangerous to read something controversial in public you are entering an era of thought crime.
So... someone dumps a high yield nuke (more likely a few high yield nukes) on one location and the whole GPS system goes to hell after a few days/weeks? Please tell me this isn't the case. Otherwise someone didn't think their cunning plan all the way through. Who knows, that could have been one of the driving forces behind this up grade.
Just because they didn't mention it in the article doesn't mean a backup site doesn't exist. Also if one doesn't exist then they should be able to create one much easier now that they've update to UNIX.
Man with sensational assumptions like that you should be a/. editor:-P
I think your example is completely valid but your comparing apples to oranges.
Most IT guys work for a business that handles their own or other companies networks/PCs, not individuals PCs. Every company that I've worked at makes it very clear that you should not expect any degree of privacy on your company owned PC. Think of all the legal trouble that would crop up if people could claim that their rights were violated when their computer was searched and porn was found, illegal mp3s, or evidence that they were selling company secrets. They do not own the PC it's not personal property. That said most companies that I have worked for don't care if you do some shopping online. They understand that you need to take care of personal stuff at work especially when working long hours. Think of is as the 5mph speeding rule of thumb. Most police will not pull you over for exceeding the speed limit by 5mph, maybe even 10mph, but go faster than that and you'll probably piss them off.
As for examples such as the Geek Squad, well, a good IT guy for individual repairs is as hard to find as a good car mechanic. Hopefully you have a friend in IT or a good independent shop that cares about it's customers.
What percentage of the retail market are laptops? If it's a high percentage then that would mean that an increasing number of people are truly abandoning windows. I for one would love to survey those who have purchased Apple laptops with the following.
1. Long time Apple evangelist.
2. Recent convert. I use to use Windows XP.
3. Recent convert. I don't like/hate Vista.
If the third option is chosen then we would could with some certainty conclude that MS finally has shot itself in the foot with Vista. If option three is not the majority answer then I guess the holy war debate will continue.;-)

Apparently, he had saved up enough bad karma to kill him.
You have no idea...
...because all I can think is how well this would work for spies and other undercover types.
It's just as hard to find a good, read competent and honest, IT tech as it is to find a good car mechanic.
MPAA Underling: Sir, unfortunately the pirates cracked the 'no play protection' within 24 hrs and are now the only ones that can watch the movies.
Murphy, is that you in there?

It would be nice to know what the feds are looking to find based on what people are reading.
It I'm completely against all of this "to save your freedoms BS". So I would like to know why they even think this is necessary.
This sounds like another solution looking for a problem much like putting RFID chips in passports.

This seems appropriate...
You do realize that the Anti-Christ looses to the Catholics/Christians in the end, right?
Let's just hope the analogy doesn't hold true at that point.
...what the Anti-Christ is to the Catholics. :-P
Rock on Trent, rock on.
...He could do the same to his own government.

I was going to mod this section but I feel compelled to comment on the point your making.
Fist let me say that I agree with you completely but your scenario is dependent on a perfect world, and we are far from that.
For your consideration:
1.Maybe the judge doesn't really understand how the e-mail was obtained so he thinks it's legal.
2. Maybe he's been bribed.
3. Maybe he's lazy and doesn't really care anymore what happens.
No matter what the reason it shows what just how much power a judge has and what the consequences are of that nearly unchecked power are.
Rodney is that you?
