You are making a simple mistake. You are assuming that the company WANTS to retain employees. What value does Gamestop get if they keep an employee? Valued, long-term employees will expect raises and if fired get more/longer unemployment. Do they give the company more value? Are they hard to replace? Will there be more eager of age high school workers there each year? Is interviewing and training a new employee very costly?
Unfortunately, long term employment is no value to the company, as they see it. At least not compared to the simplistic view of valuing the people who sell high-margin items, regardless of the value to the customer.
Exactly. Between email retention policies, internet usage, and everything else, I would not be surprised if over 90% of people have violated them. Check your yahoo email at work? Violated company policy. Plugged in a USB drive or your iPod? Probably violated company policy. Installed non-approved software? Anything from IM software to Open Office to spyware checker to p2p software. Violated company policy. Sent your friend/spouse/significant other/family member and email from your work account? Violated company policy. Viewed something risque online at work? Even if not intended, that probably violated company policy.
Silly to think of things that trivial can count, but there are reasonable reasons for them. The problem is that they are all general and not focused on if the person intended to violate them. I would not be surprised if one third of people knowingly violated their company policy.
So if you read the story, you will see that he already left the store when the store people wouldn't let his family drive off. So how is that not unreasonable?
So- you wouldn't mind a search of your stuff every time you leave a store? Regardless of if you bought anything or not? Or searching your friends or family? If it is ok to expect them to search your bag, why not to check your pockets? Or inside your shirt or pants? Where is the line? If it is ok, then should every store do it? Not just the big electronics stores, but the toy stores, book stores, clothing stores, and grocery stores? Train your kids to expect a pat down every time they walk out of a store?
You boil a frog by slowly increasing the heat on a pot the frog is in. What would be needed to trip your "essential liberty" flag?
Given the hype around Y2K, the environment, and everything else that we have been told is "bad and will happen- it just hasn't happened yet" I can understand that attitude. The problem is that flu pandemics happen, and fairly regularly. The last one was in the early 1900 and killed millions. The bird flu (called that because it starts in birds but has jumped to humans originally though livestock but also through pigeons) might not be the next pandemic, but there will be another one. The bird flu is the current most likely contender for it. HIV/AIDS has killed millions over the course of decades and that is through direct sexual or blood contact. Flus can be transmitted by touching or breathing on someone. Far more transmissible. And the bird flu has a very high, very fast mortality rate.
Given the high mortality rate, the lack of a proven immunization so far, and the far greater amount of international travel, it has the potential to be very deadly.
It has been a while since my math classes, but I believe his point is that, mathematically, a product of two numbers should be expressed to the precision of lower number of significant digits of the values multiplied. 4 has 1 significant digit and 1200 has 2. The right most zeros are not counted. If the number had been expressed as 1200. then it would be 4 significant digits. 4 x 1200 is 4800, but since the product can only have one significant digit, it is rounded to 5000.
Mathematically, significant digits are really used mainly for scientific and engineering measurement and to make sure that a non-precise number does not introduce problems with very specific numbers.
Dick Cheney's gay lesbian daughter (did you hear? She's gay) is molesting Jean Grey as we speak!
DAMMIT!
Don't you know to NEVER put an image like that out there? In less then a day there will be X-Men fanfic where that takes place just because someone read about it here and thought "yeah! That would be great!"
Sure- the movies aren't legally required to have a rating. But none of the theater chains will show unrated films, and none of the larger retail chains will sell them. Despite the silliness of the "unrated" versions of the DVDs, which are almost always essentially the original film with a bit of stuff added into it. Since it is a different film that has not been submitted for a rating it is technically unrated, but the reality is that it would very likely get the same rating as the theatrical release. It isn't like they slip in a hardcore sex scene that wasn't in the movie before.
So legally you can still do it. You can also expect that no one will ever see the film.
True- except that blu-ray movies cost far more then the same DVDs and most objective sources seem to be saying there is no reason to move to either blu-ray or HD-DVD since most people can't see any difference. I don't know anyone who has a blu-ray player or has plans to get one, so I can't imagine that blu-ray is going to make Sony lots of money in the near future.
I had to laugh at that, given that his party was in charge when we DID lose a city. Too bad no one could figure out how to tie Mother Nature to terrorists.
I read the rest of the article and it is all him setting himself up for a presidential campaign. The part about getting rid of the separation of church and state, and stating that Bush has failed in Iraq after the entire rest of the world finally came around to admitting it are hardly impressive.
I know a lot of intelligent people with paper to show it. It doesn't make 'em smart or worthy of listening to on any topic other then what they are papered in. In this case, I would be glad to hear his opinions on Western European History which is what his PhD is in.
Is it that soon? I thought they made around $10 per game for licensing. Maybe $20 with the new $10 bump in game prices, but still- to make up $240-300, that is selling 12-15 games before they make a profit.
If Blu-Ray fails, then there will never been an increase in Blu-Ray production, meaning that the component price will not drop nearly as quickly as expected (if at all), and it is possible that since it would then be a niche item that it might even increase in price. As would the games that need to be produced on Blu-Ray discs that no one else would be using.
Everytime Microsoft bursts into a new area, there are lots of "will they crush the current leader?" articles. They are here with Zune. They were there with both versions of the X-Box. I distinctly remember reading a large number of articles seriously suggesting that Microsoft would replace the Internet when MSN came out. Not just AOL- the entire Internet.
So if I were Apple, I might be a bit concerned, but I would not be that concerned. And given MS's track record of security, I would start a pool to see how long it takes the first Zune virus to pop up.
That has happened many times. I remember reading some girl posting about how her dog was set on fire by "some kids" and needed thousands of dollars for surgery and the like, so she put up a paypal account for donations. Within a day, people had disproven her story, and in three days she made up some story about it being a test of the kindness of strangers online or some crap like that and that she would refund everyone's money. But I didn't see any requests for donations on this site, though I didn't look in the forum.
If you broadcast a static encrypted signal, then all someone has to do is copy that static signal and they are good. Something like that that supports encryption likely has a chip that will encrypt the data dynamically before broadcasting it.
So if you are including the price of the entire PC no matter its other uses in the total cost of playing Oblivion, you are certainly including the cost of the HD TV in the cost of the game for the XBox, right?;)
Aww... look! An annoymous coward that is more interested in sounding like a tough guy instead of bothering to take a 30 second look through Google News on the subject! How cute!
Well- since you obviously need the help (in more ways then one) I'll put together a list of links for you. Let me know if any of the words are too big.
Here is one article that proves my point that the violence gets headlines. You need to scroll down to the ned to see that thousands of people came together peacefully to protest the cartoons: http://news.independent.co.uk/world/politics/artic le343940.ece
I would link more, but I'm not sure how much reading you can take in one sitting. And this involves reading and understanding. Much more difficult. Takes more brain power then you've shown so far.
There are many Islamic voices condeming the violence. The problem is they never get the same coverage. People pressing for peace very rarely form the active mobs that make for interesting news.
So they can setup a policy that every avatar has to look like a naked 11 year old and it is perfectly legal?
Of course not. They have to abide by laws, if they are behind closed doors or not. And the fact that they are a private service doesn't affect that. They can't say no women are allowed to play. They can't discriminate on the basis of religion. And they can't say you are not allowed to say a guild is GLBT friendly because it might offend people when the game's chat has the word "fag" show up more then any other single word.
In fact, based on some things I've read, Blizzard might even be in violation of their own agreement by restricting a GLBT friendly guild when other religious guilds actively promote themselves as such. Both could easily attract people wanting to cause problems, yet only one is warned.

You know there is a difference between 100k people mostly sitting in seats watching one thing and 50k people milling around at a convention, right?
So if you read the story, you will see that he already left the store when the store people wouldn't let his family drive off. So how is that not unreasonable?

Only crimes get public defenders. In a lawsuit you are on your own.
Funny you should ask that. It has been over 30%.
Yeah- 'cause Microsoft has such small pants that anyone with a beef could sue them successfully and make a dent in their cash box.
