Hardware support? That is total bull. I've heard stories about how it wouldn't recognize an Audigy II. This is /Sound Blaster/, peoples. And what about all those cheap winmodems? Linux and maybe even BSD would recognise the Audigy, and at least make an effort to do the modem.

Say whatever else you want, OS X does NOT have good hardware support.

How on earth do you keep it firewalled? With hardware? I don't think ZoneAlarm will even run on 95. Nor will any other common programs like Adobe Reader or any antispyware apps work.

Though I'll admit, I'm still using Office 97 (When OOO won't do), and it works just fine, no compatability problems at all. Hell, there are a lot of people still using Office 95.

Interesting. If the universe was really just a program running on some sort of 'god machine' and you could get low-enough level access to the physics (the ability to tweak individual bits), and if the 'god machine' had a hardware vulnerability under specific conditions, maybe with a big enough explosion you could overflow something, gain 'ring -1' access, and re-write reality.

    Just a thought...

I know what you mean. That old DOS stuff does have a quaint sort of charm, sort of like stone age cave painting. A lot of people also forget the one advantage of the dos kernel: it was absolutely TINY. Linux is so huge now, it won't even fit on a floppy.

Though, windows doesn't even come with edlin anymore :( I was so upset when they got rid of it, I didn't eat for a week. No kidding.

Anyhow, if you want to switch to windows, the first thing you want to get is MinGW. Seriously, the windows command prompt can get really irritating, really quickly, when you try to type 'ls' and nothing happens, and when you don't get tab autocomplete. It's the sort of thing you notice when it isn't there.

I have to second that. There are a LOT of linux apps that aren't 'gnome certified and approved' and do not appear in the menu by default. Without Alacarte, there is NO WAY to add them without editing the XML by hand (which can be done, but isn't much fun).

Thank God (or Shuttleworth, or whoever) for Ubuntu.

Seriously, I would probably feel a lot more charitable towards Apple if they weren't in direct competition with Linux. And yes, Red Hat makes money off of Linux, but they also pay developers to work on it. And, because of the GPL, those changes must be given back to the community.

Apple, on the other hand, hasn't given us much of anything.

"an anti virus that would'nt hose the registry" I'll say. I switched to AVG after Norton brought my already-slow p2 to its knees. Norton also hooks the kernel, so you have to use their uninstaller to remove it, if at all. And finally, it uses p2p to distribute its updates, so you have the server on your end stealing bandwidth from your games. ClamWin is free (as in freedom), and all that, but I have never found it to be a good replacement for AVG as it is exceedingly slow. It was really designed for Linux anyway.
