This is a study I have just completed on this.
I welcome any thoughts on this, if they are well thought out and stated.
Requirements:
Full disk encryption required:
This is required because of the nature of the security threat our users face.
If the laptop is stolen the entire contents MUST be encrypted in order to keep the data from being recovered. This is our top priority.
If we were to use a repository / single file based encryption mechanism the user would be required to move all files they are working with into and out of that system. Our users usually have no idea where the files are physically located on their hard drive and would have very little probability of moving the correct files to the correct place.
This also leaves open the availability of recovering the "Protected" files from the systems temporary file management system and swap space after they have been opened. This is a common practice which computer forensics investigators use to recover deleted files during an investigation.
As a securities industry regulatory agency our investigators machines become a prime target for identity theft, con artist, corporate espionage, and any other type of thief would like to have a chance to view the investment records of a firm who we regulate. The first line of defense against this would be to not store any exams on the laptop which are not absolutely necessary for the examiner at the time of fielding. This still leave the possibility of their being current exams on the machine and traces of previous exams in the systems temporary and swap file space. In order to guard against this type of data loss and exposure to liability we must encrypt the data with cryptographic industry standard encryption systems. In order to be sure we have encrypted everything, we must encrypt the entire hard drive.
Three levels of authentication required:
1. Something you know (Password)
2. Something you have (Biometric Fingerprint Reader with Smartcard)
3. Something you are (Fingerprint)
When using a password only authentication system our users are exposed to the possibility of a shoulder surfer who is watching either directly or using cameras, remember that most cell phones now come with built in cameras which can be used to photo or video the position of the users fingers while they are typing the password in.
This also exposes the system to a brute force password attack which given time and equipment can eventually come up with the correct password. If the identity thief - Con artist thinks they will be able to make a few million dollars from the data on that laptop they will be willing to go to great lengths and expense to obtain it.
We have chosen biometrics as the 2nd/3rd level of authentication due to the fact that if a smart card / USB key is used it will simply be kept in the case with the laptop therefore negating it as a security solution in the event of laptop theft and reducing the level from 2 to only 1 instead of 3. If the reader is kept in the bag we still have 2 levels with the #3 being the most secure of all.
The biometric solution we have selected uses 4 levels of security in theory by requiring a smartcard and USB reader however we feel that the added security is negated due to the fact that the user will leave the smartcard in the reader and the reader in the bag with the laptop when not being used.
If we try to tell the users they must keep these items separate and not keep them with the laptop they will simply lose or damage them. They usually have enough items to carry while moving from site to site and the more compact the system can be the less chance they will leave something or that some thing will be grabbed with out their notice.
Our users are not usually accessing a network when outside of our office and the access to the local hard drive is protected through the windows logon and file sharing already when they do. This will keep intruders

I knew a trucker who fired a fire extenguisher into the face of a would-be hijacker. The hijacker sudenly found he could no longer breathe and the force or the agent from the extenguisher caused him to fall off the truck which was already moving. We had a few holes in the trayler to repair but the driver / truck / and almost all of the cargo was just fine for the wear. This happened in NYC
The driver was a redneck but thought it better not to cary his gun up front while in town. Quite smart for a trucker actually...
Uhh ok, I am responsible for the management of our spam filter and since we are a state agency we are REQUIRED to maintain a copy of EVERYTHING that comes into this office for a length of time. With SPAM it is 3 mounths. My revirwed spam folder has at the time of posting this 31069 verified spam e-mail that i cannot do anything with untill the first of next month. Keep in mind this is only the 11th and i cleared out 30 days worth on the first.
Ok i'll give ya that it is hosted on exchange but still must be loaded into outlook.
(Wish i could get away with using something else, just for the fun of it though.)

This laser would rotate and be able to read license plates at any angle where the laser would be able to bounce back from each individual letter / number on the plate.
Support call from lawyer in my office yesterday: My machine is making a grinding noise.
I go to the office and look at the machine in question and sure enough the power supply fan is grinding away. I promptly (with as much flair as possible) punch the power supply and it stops making the noise and starts blowing air just fine. (This is a common symptom of a fan that is on it's last... fin) I stood up and said "Their ya go! Let me know if you have any more trouble outa the thing." then walked back to my office and called for a warranty replacement of the part to be next day aired to me.
Yep some times you simply "MUST" slam your fist into it to make it work! Sure is fun to watch the lawyers face when you do something like this.
And still a few days later another person shapes the paper into a large bag then holds a flame under it so as not to catch it on fire thus heating the air in the bag causing it to... float.;)
Actually the whole "Exercise" thing is mainly about bringing your hart rate and breathing rate up and keeping it there for 30 min or so. The "long walks" part is just your way of doing it. Add to that a like minded girl and sudenly exercise = fun.
Your results will likely take longer to show as much progress, but you stress levels will likely be much less than that of some one spending the same amount of time at a gym, doing arobics or what ever.
The key is to find something YOU like to do and DO it, and keep doing it every day or at least every other day. If you can find some one to join you in what ever you are doing it makes it much easier to keep doing as well.
With an amateur radio license it is still legal to receive police and emergency radio frequencies and under certain circumstances it is legal to transmit on them.
