Most people don't know about the counter-DMCA notices.

I'd bet that if you made a realistic looking letter from a made-up law company it would be very hard to trace and YouTube would still remove the video. Once a DMCA notice has been received, Youtube would be also liable for copyright infringement so they'd have to remove it just in case.

The notion of IP (intellectual property) has given them the excuse to try to get everything they can, even when things such as fair use and respecting your customers get in the way.

Unfortunately, DSG (the group that runs PC World) are the worst retailers here in the UK. Part of the reason is probably that their staff are too stupid to realise the OS makes no difference... they get their PC training off the back of a Cornflakes box.

They dont care about bad publicity that much because they drawf other retailers for electronics/PCs over here. Most people in the UK dont even realise that PC World, Dixons, Currys, Comet (and a few of the big mobile phone chains too) are all the same company.

You can try mentioning the Sales of Goods Act but I doubt it will help much. Their staff mostly works on comissions and are largely just walking salesmen that know nothing about what they sell unless its on the price/info little card next to the PC.

They threw me out of the local store once when I told someone about to buy some ram that they were charging 150% more than the PC shop 400 yards away.

Its not like any number of large companies/organisations couldn't build something bigger/faster/better if they really wanted to (the NSA probably has). The Voyager computer is the only one that will still be impressive in 5 years.

I would think wonders of the world would be something that would still be considered impressive to a later generation.

  22. Re:I hope it wins! on HD VMD Shows Up Late For the Format War · · Score: 2, Interesting

But should one go for the cheap HD VMD today or support BDs more expensive route (which surely will be cheaper tomorrow)?

It will take much larger numbers to be produced for BD to even get close to HDDVD/HDVMD in manufacturing cost. HDDVD/VMDs can be produced using existing equipment with small modifications. Manufacturing BD requires new equipment and is a much more complex process.
BD Players also cost about 10 times as much to manufacture as a HDVMD player does.

There is also the issue of media longevity. The recording surface in a BD disc is very close to the underside of the disc. This will increase the likelihood that scratches will cause errors and also increase the chances of warping. The HD format discs are manufactured the same way as DVD and are much more resistant to scratches & warping.

The only advantage that BD really has over HDDVD is the amount of data storage. Dont forget that both BD & HDDVD are still only generally using 1 or 2 layers. HDVMD uses 4 layers to reach 20Gb.
